20 Dec 2001 The Israel Review of Arts and Letters - 2001/112 FOREWORD COEXISTENCE MUSEUM AMICHAI BIBLE ... CREDITS A Touch of Grace: Yehuda Amichai The following poems by the late Jerusalem poet, Yehuda Amichai , were among those published in "A Touch of Grace," published by the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem, 2000.
At times Jerusalem is a city of knives,
And even the hopes for peace are sharp enough to slice into
The harsh reality and they become dulled or broken.
The church bells try so hard to ring out calm, round tones,
But they become heavy like a pestle pounding on a mortar,
Heavy, muffled, downtrodding voices. And the cantor
And the muezzin try to sing sweetly
But in the end the sharp wail bursts forth:
O Lord, God of us all, The Lord is One
One, one, one, one. Translated by Irena Gordon (The Hebrew word for "one" also means "sharp" in Hebrew) Love of Jerusalem There is a street where they sell only red meat And there is a street where they sell only clothes and perfumes. And there is a day when I see only cripples and the blind

A profile of the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai
Reprinted with permission from the website Pegasos. An Israeli poetwho also published short stories, novels, and playsAmichai was among the first to compose poems in colloquial Israeli Hebrew. His language is gently ironic, sometimes passionate or straightforward, or even emotionally dry. Memories from childhood appear in Amichai's work as nostalgic glimpses into a world of peace and innocence: "Remember: even the departure to terrible battles / Passes by gardens and windows / And children playing, a dog barking." Many of his poems are addressed to Jerusalem. Amichai's own life was closely linked to the birth and battle for existence of the State of Israel. In 1982 he received the Israel Prize of Poetry, his country's highest honor.

http://www.english.emory.edu/Bahri/Amichai.html
YEHUDA AMICHAI Biography Y In 1935 Amichai immigrated with his entire extended family to Palestine, then a British colony, landing briefly in Petach Tikvah (an agricultural settlement near Jaffa) before settling in Jerusalem. During World War II he served in the British army's Jewish Brigade; it was in wartime, stationed in Egypt, that the young Amichai began seriously exploring poetry. He was particularly attracted to the modern English poetry of W.H. Auden and T.S. Eliot, who, together with the German romantic poets, would strongly influence him throughout his poetic career. After his discharge from the army Amichai joined the elite Palmach force, which was fighting for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. In 1946 he assumed his new last name, which translates to "my people lives." Amichai again took up arms during the 1948 War of Independence and continued to do so in subsequent wars. The ubiquity of war in Israeli life and its interplay with the nation's stubborn dreams of peace make up one of the most significant currents in Amichai's poetry. As he wrote, "I have never written a war poem that does not mention love in it, and I have never written a love poem without an echo of war" (Times). Amichai went on to publish numerous collections of poetry in Hebrew as well as plays, essays, novels, and children's books, over a 46-year career. His work has been translated into over thirty languages, including Chinese, Arabic, and Catalan. He was awarded, among other honors, the 1982 Israel Prize, his nation's highest award for cultural achievement; became a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1986; and was, until his death in 2000, a perennial candidate for the Nobel Prize. Amichai passed away of cancer in Jerusalem on September 22, 2000, survived by his second wife Chana and his three children

"Quick and Bitter" - Yehuda Amichai
child
Originally uploaded by yasmin the storyteller The end was quick and bitter.
Slow and sweet was the time between us,
Slow and sweet were the nights
when my hands did not touch one another in despair
but with the love of your body
which came between them.
And when you entered into me
it seemed then that great happiness
could be measured with the precision
of sharp pain. Quick and bitter. Slow and sweet were the nights. Now is as bitter and grinding as sand - "We shall be sensible" and similar curses. And as we stray further from love we multiply the words, Words and sentences long and orderly. Had we remained together we could have become a silence. posted by yasmin at 5:05 PM postCount('113149831762935692'); postCountTB('113149831762935692'); < Home

My Mother on Her Sickbed
My mother on her sickbed with the lightness
and hollowness of a person
Who has already said goodbye at an airport
In the beautiful and quiet area
Between parting and takeoff.
My mother on her sickbed.
All she had in her life is now
Like empty bottles in front of the door That will show once more with colored labels What filled them with joy and sadness. Her last words, Take the flowers out of the room, She said seven days before her death, Then she closed herself for seven days, Like the seven days of mourning. But even her death created in her room A warm hominess With her sleeping face and the cup with its teaspoon And the towel and the book and the glasses, And her hand on the blanket, the same hand that felt my forehead, in childhood. without a mirror facing me,
a psalm: you've shampooed your hair, an entire
forest of pine trees is filled with yearning on your head.
Calmness inside and calmness outside
have hammered your face between them to a tranquil copper.
The pillow on your bed is your spare brain, tucked under your neck for remembering and dreaming. the earth is trembling beneath us, love. Let's lie fastened together, a double safety-lock. The Diameter of the Bomb The diameter of the bomb was thirty centimeters and the diameter of its effective range about seven meters, with four dead and eleven wounded. Modern poetry, so the refrain goes, is largely unreadable, divorced from the concerns of ordinary people. Whatever the merits of this charge, it cannot be leveled against Yehuda Amichai. His poems are as readable as this morning’s newspaper; their concernssex, death, and God, memory and the ravages of timecan fairly be called universal. The poems in this volume, translated from Amichai’s Hebrew, range from his first collection, published in 1955, to his most recent, published in 1985. The poems written before 1969 have been translated by Stephen Mitchell, acclaimed for his versions of Rainer Maria Rilke; the later poems have been translated by Chana Bloch. There is a small section of notes at the end of the book, and a handy index of titles and first lines. Amichai was born in Germany in 1924 and came to Palestine in 1936. Reared in an Orthodox home, he has long since rejected the faith of his fathers, but his poetry is saturated with biblical imagery and allusions. The tension between Amichai’s profane, skeptical voice and this biblical substratum gives his poetry an unusual tone.

    Yehuda Amichai 1924 - 2000
Wildpeace Not the peace of a cease-fire
not even the vision of the wolf and the lamb,
    but rather
as in the heart when the excitement is over
and you can talk only about a great weariness.
I know that I know how to kill, that makes me an adult.
And my son plays with a toy gun that knows
how to open and close its eyes and say Mama.
    A peace
without the big noise of beating swords into ploughshares, without words, without the thud of the heavy rubber stamp: let it be light, floating, like lazy white foam. A little rest for the wounds - who speaks of healing? (And the howl of the orphans is passed from one generation to the next, as in a relay race: the baton never falls.) Let it come like wildflowers, suddenly, because the field must have it: wildpeace. Amichai read this poem at the 1994 awards ceremony in Oslo when Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres received the Nobel Peace Prize with Yasir Arafat. In Memoriam
