Executive summary: Band of Brothers A college football player who played in the Rose Bowl, Ambrose received a PhD in History from Wisconsin and embarked upon a career writing over two dozen history books, including lengthy biographies and works intended for the popular audience. Many of the works were on matters of military history, and in 1998 he consulted with Steven Spielberg for the ultraviolent Saving Private Ryan A scandal arose when apparent plagiarism was noticed several of his works. The portions in question were not quoted but they were footnoted, so this puts him in a murky gray area but not an actual plagiarist. In a letter he noted that the sum total of such material amounted to 10 pages of a total volume of over 15,000. In general however, particularly his later works revealed very little new scholarship. Wife: Judith Dorlester (m. 1957)

Lori Aurelia Williams Stephen Ambrose: A guide for appreciating our history INTERVIEW BY EDWARD MORRIS Stephen E. Ambrose's histories are as vivid as screenplays. One moment you're overlooking the distant battlefield, the next you're huddled head-to-head with the generals in the command tent. That's how it is with Ambrose's latest DeMillean epic, Nothing Like It In The World: The Men Who Built The Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869 . By every measure from the speed at which it was done to the exquisite coordination of effort it required the railroad was a stunning achievement. First came the dreamers and surveyors, as Ambrose recounts, then the capitalists and their political allies, and finally the hordes of laborers essential to giving substance to the dream.

The Fifties and Ike: A Conversation with Stephen Ambrose Humanities editor Mary Lou Beatty talked recently with historian Stephen Ambrose about Eisenhower and the 1950s. Ambrose's books include Eisenhower: Soldier and President Rise to Globalism: American Foreign Policy since 1938 , and a three-volume biography of Richard Nixon. Ambrose is founding director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans. Mary Lou Beatty : There's a documentary film coming out this fall on the interstate highway system, which has been around now a little more than forty years. I thought it would be a good time to talk about the 1950s in America and the man who signed it into law, Dwight D. Eisenhower. You've written a wonderful book, Eisenhower: Soldier and President You met the man? Ambrose : Oh, sure, from 1964 to his death, which was in 1969, so I had about four years of interviewing him, off and on. Q : In a way, we've simplified him. The grin, the avuncular quality. He was a much more complicated man than that. You tell a story in your book about the fact that he didn't even know how to dial a phone. Ambrose : That's right. Ike and John drove up to Gettysburg after Kennedy's inaugural. They got to the gate and sat there, and no Secret Service man appeared to open the gate. John finally realized what was happening and said, "Dad" so Ike got out and opened the gate. They got into the house and Ike wanted to call whomever. The last time he'd had to make a phone call himself, you picked up the phone and an operator at the other end said, "Number, please," and you gave a number, and the operator dialed it for you. He started yelling into the phone, hearing only the buzz. Little things like that would get him terribly angry, and blood would rush to his face. Finally he slammed it down. "Goddamn it! How do you work this thing?" John came over and showed him how to dial. It was a rotary dial. Ike thought it was just wonderful. He enjoyed it immensely.

The Histories of Stephen E. Ambrose
Citizen Soldiers: The U.S. Army from the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge to the Surrender of Germany by Stephen E. Ambrose
One of Ambrose's strongest popular works, in part because he allows his sources to tell their stories in their own voices. The result is about as close as one can get to the actual experience of the infantry in the European Theatre, even though that still leaves it worlds away from having been there.
Ambrose takes us from D-Day through to the Bulge, then takes a lengthy interlude of several chapters that focus on specific aspects of the war. Most, especially the chapter on medics, nurses, and the aid station system, are excellent. One chapter, on the air war, is somewhat redundant to his later work The Wild Blue , but is also fairly short. Finally, he returns to the chronology and takes us across the Rhine into Germany.

Ambrose, Author Of "Band Of Brothers" The Story Of Easy Company Distinguished historian and author Dr. Stephen E. Ambrose wrote "Band of Brothers," the acclaimed nonfiction best seller that is the basis for the 10-part HBO miniseries of the same name. Asked why he chose to tell the story Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, Ambrose replies, "It’s the scope of the thing. The adventures of this group of men take you through America and through much of Europe, including most of the high points of the European theater of the war." At a military reunion in New Orleans in the fall of 1988, Ambrose taped interviews with as many units as possible, including members of Easy Company, focusing on the D-Day experience. Ambrose’s neighbor, Walter Gordon, a corporal in Easy Company, then circulated a transcript of Ambrose’s interviews to other company veterans, including Richard Winters, the company’s commanding officer. Winters found discrepancies, and, since he was planning to visit Gordon with a few other veterans, suggested meeting Ambrose to set the record straight. At Ambrose’s home, Gordon, Winters, Forrest Guth and Carwood Lipton spent hours discussing their memories of D-Day, which was an educational experience for Ambrose. During dinner that night, talk turned to the company’s adventures in the days and months following D-Day, a conversation that convinced Ambrose to put their story on paper. Ambrose recalls telling Winters, "What you guys have done, and the way in which the company holds together so tightly, I have to write this up…this is just too good!"
