Stephen Ambrose, as an eldest son, grew up knowing he would be a country doctor too, and went up to Wisconsin State University at Madison to read Medicine. His tutor told him he had to take one non-medical subject in his first year; he picked history from a list, without looking at it. The history tutor told him to write an essay on Hugh Trevor-Roper's The Last Days of Hitler . Ambrose came back with the essay, and a demand to change faculties; thereafter he devoted himself to history, and became a prolific historical author as well as a university professor.

But as usual, Steve's response was disciplined and purposeful. "I've asked myself if I have two months or two years to live how do I want to use that time?" Then he added, "I've had a wonderful life writing books. Next to Moira and my family that is what I love most; so I'm going to write another book and I'm going to call it A Love Song to America ." Beginning with the river's mouth in Louisiana, their journey much of it aboard the Delta Queen steamboat extended all the way to the Mississippi's headwaters in Lake Itasca, Minn. Photographer Sam Abell joined Ambrose and Brinkley to recount the history and portray the modern life of what T.S. Eliot once called the "strong brown god." In the following excerpts from their travel journals, Ambrose and Brinkley enter the United States through its Gulf gateway, discuss Thomas Jefferson's great land bargain, and offer a candidate for poet laureate of New Orleans. It was March, the rest of New Orleans was recuperating from Mardi Gras, and we were hovering in an Astar 350-2 Helicopter 600 feet above land, the doors removed, at a speed of 70 knots over the bountiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Our pilot was Jere Cobb, a tough, muscular 65-year-old ex-Marine who worked for NASA from 1963 to 1977 training the Apollo astronauts how to carefully land their lunar modules on the moon.

Ambrose The Cliff The Cannons It was a nearly 100-meter-high cliff, with perpendicular sides jutting out into the Channel. It looked down on Utah Beach to the left and Omaha Beach to the right. There were six 155mm cannon in heavily reinforced concrete bunkers that were capable of hitting either beach with their big shells. On the outermost edge of the cliff, the Germans had an elaborate, well-protected outpost, where the spotters had a perfect view and could call back coordinates to the gunners at the 155s. Those guns had to be neutralized. The Allied bombardment of Pointe-du-Hoc had begun weeks before D-Day . Heavy bombers from the U.S. Eighth Air Force and British Bomber Command had repeatedly plastered the area, with a climax coming before dawn on June 6. Then the battleship Texas took up the action, sending dozens of 14-inch shells into the position. Altogether, Pointe-du-Hoc got hit by more than ten kilotons of high explosives, the equivalent of the explosive power of the atomic bomb used at Hiroshima. During a time when historians were usually thought of as quiet men sitting behind desks writing only for other historians, Ambrose managed to break through the stereotype. He found a way to bring history to everyday people. He made studying history a popular pastime. It seemed that nearly ever time I went to the bookstore, I would find a fascinating new book by Ambrose. Even if it wasn't on a topic I am usually interested in, by the time I picked it up, his friendly prose and interesting facts drew me in every time. And did you ever hear him speak? His husky voice (now I realize, probably caused by the decades of smoking) was mesmerizing as his passion for the people and the past made history come alive. Stephen Ambrose was born on January 10, 1936, in Decatur, Illinois but spent his childhood in the small town of Whitewater, Wisconsin. The town was a little too small for Ambrose, so he was excited about heading off to college to study pre-med, preparing to follow in his father's footsteps and become a medical doctor. However, his future changed drastically when he took a history class from William B. Hesseltine entitled "Representative Americans." Fascinated by Hesseltine's lecturing style, which made the story come alive, Ambrose quickly changed his major to history and graduated with a B.A. in 1957.
