October 15, 2002 Stephen E. Ambrose, one of a handful of historians who have become best-selling authors, died of lung cancer Sunday, October 13th in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Perhaps best known for his books on Lewis and Clark and World War II, Ambrose also founded the National D-Day Museum and the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans. During his career, much of which he spent as a professor at the University of New Orleans, he wrote or edited more than 35 books. Email to a Friend Ambrose was an Explorer-in-Residence for the National Geographic Society. For him, teaching and writing were two sides of the same coin. Ambrose is remembered by his friends as a man who lived his life to the fullest. He didn't conduct his research solely from the library. When writing his book on D-Day, he visited the shores of Normandy; for his book on the air war over Germany, he flew in B-24 bombers; for his book on the explorations of Lewis and Clark, he followed their trail. Stephen E. Ambrose, the best-selling author of D-Day and the distinguished biographer of Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower, has now written the definitive account of the most momentous expedition in American history Lewis and Clark's pioneering journey across the North American continent from the Mississippi to the Pacific, carried out under the personal direction of President Thomas Jefferson. In UNDAUNTED COURAGE: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West Above all, however, UNDAUNTED COURAGE is a grand, colorful narrative of heart-stopping adventure and wondrous discovery, in which Ambrose conveys a vivid sense of what western North America was like before its settlement by European-Americans, as seen through the eyes of the first white man to explore it. As Ambrose puts it, "Lewis was able, through his writing, to take us, two centuries later, to the unexplored Missouri River, Rocky Mountain, and Oregon wilderness country of 1804-6, to meet Indian tribes untouched by European influence, to paint their portraits in words that capture the economic, political, and social conditions of their lives, along with their vibrancy, savagery, beliefs, habits, manners, and customs in a way never since surpassed and seldom matched. The journals he wrote are among his greatest achievements and constitute a priceless gift to the American people. . . . "

Cancer-Stricken Historian's New Book Is A Race Against Time
NEW ORLEANS, May 23, 2002 (AP)
(AP) In what he fears may be his dying days, cancer-stricken historian Stephen E. Ambrose spends much of his time at his word processor, trying to set the record straight about some of the views he espoused as a young professor.
Perhaps best known for his 1994 best seller "D-Day," Ambrose, 66, has put a World War II project about the Pacific on hold in favor of a new book depicting his own transformation from a left-wing demonstrator to a super patriot.
"I want to correct all the mistakes I made ... when I would tell my history classes that dropping the bomb on Hiroshima was a crime, that the Mexican-American War was nothing but a land grab and that people like Henry Ford and J.D. Rockefeller got into philanthropy to buy their way into heaven," Ambrose said in his typically raspy tone and energetic meter. "I want to tell all the things that are right about America."
When he was diagnosed with lung cancer a month ago, Ambrose, a longtime smoker, was given six months to live without treatment. He opted for experimental chemotherapy at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans.

Ambrose spent much of his career as a relatively little known history professor until he burst onto the best-seller's list with his 1994 book "D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II." Based in large part on interviews with veterans about their own combat experiences, the book recounted the chaotic, bloody beach invasions of Normandy from the typical American soldier's perspective. "He was saying, 'There's all this obsession with high command, but the real story is these citizen soldiers who still live in every town and hamlet in the United States,"' said Douglas Brinkly, a former pupil who took over for Ambrose as director of the University of New Orleans' Eisenhower Center. With unadorned but lively prose, Ambrose continued to captivate readers as he churned out history books at an industrial pace, publishing more than 30, including a half-dozen more best-sellers such as "Citizen Soldiers" and "The Wild Blue."

LOUIS, Mississippi (CNN) Historian Stephen Ambrose, author of more than 25 books of American history including "Band of Brothers" and multivolume biographies of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon died early Sunday. He was 66. The author succumbed after a battle with lung cancer, said Doug Brinkley, a close family friend and director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans in Louisiana. Brinkley, who recently collaborated with Ambrose on the National Geographic book "The Mississippi and the Making of a Nation," said the writer was diagnosed with lung cancer in May and was unable to accompany him on a tour to promote the book because of his illness. "Cancer was 'the battle of my life,' he used to say," Brinkley said Sunday. Ambrose was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin, in 1936. Initially a pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin, he switched his major after an American history course with William B. Hesseltine, a professor he described as "a great teacher of writing."

Holocaust education from THE NIZKOR PROJECT. James Bacque s Other Losses A Review by stephen E. ambrose. Ike and the Disappearing Atrocities
http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/people/b/bacque-james/ambrose-001.html
James Bacque's 'Other Losses'
A Review by Stephen E. Ambrose Ike and the Disappearing Atrocities
New York Times Book Review, February 24, 1991 The reason for the notoriety is the author's conclusion that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, as head of the American occupation of Germany in 1945, deliberately starved to death German prisoners of war in staggering numbers. Mr. Bacque charges that "the victims undoubtedly number over 800,000, almost certainly over 800,000 and quite likely over a million. Their deaths were knowingly caused by army officers who had sufficient resources to keep the prisoners alive." Eisenhower's method, according to Mr. Bacque, was simple: he changed the designation of the prisoners from "Prisoners of War" (P.O.W.), required by the Geneva Convention to be fed the same rations as American G.I.'s, to "Disarmed Enemy Forces" (D.E.F.), which allowed him to cut their rations to starvation level. Mr. Bacque says the D.E.F. were also denied medical supplies and shelter. They died by the hundreds of thousands. Their deaths were covered up on Army records by listing them as "other looses" on charts showing weekly totals of prisoners on hand, numbers discharged and so forth. So outraged is Mr. Bacque by his discovery of this heinous crime that he has been quoted in a wire service interview as saying Americans "should take down every statue of Eisenhower, and every photograph of him and annul his memory from American history as best they can, except to say, 'Here was a man who did very evil things that we're ashamed of.'" Questions immediately arise. If there were a million dead, where are the bodies? Did Eisenhower have such vast power that he could order starvation on a mass scale and keep it a secret? Was the undoubted suffering in the camps, especially the transit camps along the Rhine, the result of Eisenhower's policy or the result of the chaotic conditions that prevailed in Europe in the spring and summer of 1945?
