He moved to Madrid in 1967, where he found sporadic work as an actor. After passing a State examination to become a civil servant, he joined Spain´s National Telephone Company as a clerk, combining his work with his cinema pursuits. He made a number of short films between 1974 and 1978 and also spent the seventies involved in the theatre, music and writing for reviews. He made his first feature film, Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other girls on the Heap in 1980. The film was not only controversial and provocative but also a success, which enabled him to leave his job in the telephone company to work full-time in the cinema. In 1985 he launched a production company called El deseo with his brother Agustín, and has since produced his own and other directors´ films.

Rewarded in Cannes 2006 for best script and best actris. What else can you say. He manages to capture life as it is, and even the simplest things in it can become an adventure in one of his creations. The european DVD (for once) contained extra material worth watching. In the sequence 'Pedro Almod³var and the Actors' it's extremely interesting to study how Almod³var in a very gentle manner starts the conversation with the actors gathered around a large table, and then only in a subtle way steers it, trying to let the actors be as free as possible to express their feelings around the way the movie was created and elaborate on their respective roles.
