Screen good girl June Allyson dead at 88
CBC Arts June Allyson, the petite blonde who played "girl next door" roles throughout  the '40s and '50s, died Saturday at her home in Ojai, Calif., her daughter said Monday. She was 88. Allyson's third husband, David Ashrow, was at her side, daughter Pamela Allyson Powell said.
Actress June Allyson in 1943. She died on Saturday of acute respiratory failure.
(Associated Press)
The cause of death was pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis — Allyson had been ill for a long period. Allyson played a series of sunny, perfect wife roles opposite actors such as James Stewart and Van Johnson.  She and Stewart were considered a perfect screen couple after starring together in The Stratton Story, The Glenn Miller Story  and Strategic Air Command. "I have big teeth," the raspy-voiced actress said, trying to explain her appeal in a 1986 interview. "I lisp. My eyes disappear when I smile. My voice is funny. I don't sing like Judy Garland. I don't dance like Cyd Charisse. But women identify with me. And while men desire Cyd Charisse, they'd take me home to meet Mom." Allyson was born Eleanor Geisman on Oct. 7, 1917, in the Bronx. Her alcoholic father left when she was six and her mother supported them by working as a telephone operator.

Down On Your Heels
Up On Your Toes! A Tribute to June Allyson
She was the girl GIs gravitated toward, the kind of woman every man wanted to marry, and the special friend everyone wanted to know. She loved people, and they loved her back. She exuded positive energy and a sunshiny smile that was uplifting - and, somehow, just being around her was uplifting and made people feel better. She was, and shall always be, "Good News" itself. Harry James' trumpet (from "Two Girls and a Sailor") is blowing in the heavens, and one can hear and see June Allyson exuberantly singing, "He's the young man with a horn!" To know "Junie" (as she was personified by her close friends), one only had to become familiar with Ella Van Geisman, the little girl from the Bronx. She was a hard worker, and a powerhouse. She danced her way out of poverty and, on a dare from her school chums, learned to dance like and eventually befriended her #1 heroine, Ginger Rogers. And, out of a Third Avenue El, she learned to follow in the footsteps of her #1 hero, Fred Astaire.

June Allyson Dies
June Allyson died Sunday. In 2001, she gave an interview on Larry King Live in which she said her name was originally Ella Van Geisman, a Dutch name. Others have decided, for no apparent reason, that she was Jewish.
The 1920 New York census lists her as Ella, daughter of Anna and Robert Geisman, a chemist. Her parents were married in 1914 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in the Bronx by the pastor, William Junge. Her grandfather, Henry Geismann , was born in 1864 in Ahsen, then part of Prussia, and christened in the same Catholic church where his parents were married. So again , it appears that the Dutch are really Deutsch.
On her mother's side, Allyson's grandmother's ancestors were from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Her maternal grandfather was named James Provost. He may have been a descendant of the early settlers of New Amsterdam, which would make him and June Allyson Dutch.

Sunday, June 17: Sight Seeing (blog by Allyson)
Since I can't begin practice until Monday, Terry and I decided to make use of our time Saturday and Sunday to get the feel of the land, see the sights, and enjoy ourselves while we overcame the jetlag.
We started out Saturday morning, or shall I say Saturday afternoon (we woke up at 11:15 AM) and realized our first trip had to be to the store to get snacks and goodies for our room, plus pick up a few items we forgot at home. On our way into town, we saw a store called "Hipercor" (Hubie calls it the "Spanish Wal-Mart"). For those who read our postings from Burgos, Spain in 2005, you will remember that Hipercor is one of those stores that has everything - think Super Wal-Mart on steroids. The Granada Hipercor makes the Burgos store look like a corner market. We found all we needed and more there.
And much to our surprise and DELIGHT, it is right across the street from the contest hotel. Terry and I are staying at a different hotel (same chain though) since there were no rooms for our stay here before the contest begins.
After our trip to the Hipercor, We decided we would take a look around Granada. We drove up a hill and found the old section of town.

She was born Ella Geisman in the Bronx, New York and began her career in live theatre. She made her feature film debut in the 1943 big-screen version of the Broadway musical Best Foot Forward. She won a Golden Globe Award for her 1951 role in Too Young to Kiss, where she played a talented pianist who poses as a child prodigy to gain an audition for a music impresario who is holding tryouts for a kids' concert tour. As the 1950s wore on, Allyson grew into roles as the supportive wife in such films as "The Glenn Miller Story" and "Strategic Air Command."

StinkyLulu
Ponders the myriad pathologies of pop culture.
Obsesses about actressing at the edges.
Loves grilled cheese.
June Allyson (1917-2006) in THE OPPOSITE SEX - A Great BM Tribute It's been quite a while since StinkyLulu's worked up a "A Great Bad Movie Tribute" to a recently departed movie star. So a brief word of introduction might be in order: "Great BM Tributes" afford the opportunity to reflect on what was great about a particular performer. By considering their performance in a real stinker of a movie (the kind likely to be omitted from their official remembrances), StinkyLu considers how that performer found a special place in Lulu's heart, whether StinkyLulu actually "liked" their work or not.
The recent passing of June Allyson
just screams for "A Great BM Tribute" because, for years, StinkyLulu just found June Allyson completely insufferable. That nasal twang of a voice. Those twoinky bangs. The wifey roles. The Depends . But somehow, and for no particular reason, over the last couple years, StinkyLulu's become strangely fond of Miss June. Even no, especially that voice. More than her

I watched the TCM 1998 interview she did with Robert Osborne. It was very intimate. She admitted she had had a crush on actor Alan Ladd, but her husband "Richard" (Dick Powell) wouldn't let her go. I finally got to watch "Little Womemn" all the way through. She was fabulous in it, she carried the main storylines. A real
tear-jerker.

June Allyson, 1917 - 2006.
June Allyson , the sunny, cracked-voiced "perfect wife" of James Stewart Van Johnson and other movie heroes, has died, her daughter Pamela Allyson Powell said Monday. She was 88. With typical wonderment, Allyson expressed surprise in a 1986 interview that she had ever become a movie star: "I have big teeth. I lisp. My eyes disappear when I smile. My voice is funny. I don't sing like Judy Garland . I don't dance like Cyd Charisse . But women identify with me. And while men desire Cyd Charisse, they'd take me home to meet mom." Bob Thomas for the AP. The official site ; the Wikipedia entry; more linkage at Classic Movies Updated through 7/12. Updates, 7/12: Ronald Bergan in the Guardian : "When Allyson was cast against type - as, for example, José Ferrer 's shrewish wife in The Shrike (1955) - 90% of the audience at a preview wrote on their cards that they would never accept her in a wicked role. As a result, the film ending was re-shot with the character seeing the error of her ways, though it was not enough to appease the fans and the film flopped. After that she returned to more exemplary uxorial roles." In the New York Times Aljean Harmetz recalls Janet Maslin's review of Allyson's autobiography in which Allyson came off sounding "like someone who has come to inhabit the very myths she helped to create on the screen."
