The Guess Who While the Guess Who did have several hits in America, they were superstars in their home country of Canada during the 1960s and early '70s. The roots of the Guess Who can be traced back to the late 1950s, when singer, Allan Kowbell led the group as "The Silvertones". The band played local gigs in and around the Winnipeg area and after a series of personnel changes, the band consisted of Kowbell, guitarist Randy Bachman, drummer Garry Peterson, bassist Jim Kale and keyboard player Bob Ashley. Heavily influenced by British records, the boys wanted to take on a more 'English sounding name'. Emulating one of their favourites, 'The Shadows', they settled on 'The Reflections'. Kowbell, as the front man and lead singer, also felt the need to change his name. As a long time fan of 'The Chad Mitchell Trio', he stuck 'Chad' in front of his real first name, and the band became 'Chad Allan and The Reflections'. Having a record on the radio boosted the band's fortunes and they were signed to back-up Bobby Curtola on a short tour. Around this time, Quality Records showed some interest and invited the boys to record another single. Back in Minneapolis they cut four tunes, all of which were released on two 45's and again managed only regional interest. At the dawn of the 'British Invasion' in 1964, Winnipeg radio and TV stations jumped on the band wagon, promoting dances and teen events, and once again, Chad Allen and The Reflections were the top draw. Taking advantage of having friends in the right places, the band approached Bob Burns, the host of a Saturday afternoon dance program on CJAY TV, and asked him to manage them. Around the same time, they returned to the studio to record another single for Quality, "Stop Teasin' Me" and "A Shot Of Rhythm and Blues". This time, the record did a little better, reaching out to other regions of Canada and charting briefly on Toronto's RPM list. They were close to success, and they knew it. All they needed was the right song.

Chad Allan THE GUESS WHO CONNECTION: THE CHAD ALLAN YEARS Crossed-Paths Anecdotes by Bill Hillman In the late '50s, the radio ads for a new Winnipeg rock 'n' roll band drew my attention. I had just bought my first electric guitar, a shiny black, Les Paul-shaped instrument with gold fleck and white binding. It was made by the Harmony guitar company for the Simpson's-Sears Company of Canada and was called a Silvertone. Obviously this guitar left an impression on this new group of young musicians led by Chad Allan (Allan Kowbel) as they had named their new group: Allan and the Silvertones In 1961 I packed up my ever-present Silvertone and moved to Brandon where I had enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme at Brandon College. My first years in college in the early '60s were exciting musical times. I was performing in a country band on a daily TV show, a jazz combo, pick-up bands, old-time groups, and various rock bands where I played guitar instrumentals for four hours a night. The manager of one of these rock bands also owned the Brandon Roller Rink which featured some of the top USA touring bands of the day: Ventures Fireballs Conway Twitty (when he was a rocker)

The band was named after guitarist Gord Murison's Silvertone guitar. They played Top-40 material by American rock and roll acts and also featured Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, and Jim Kale. In 1962 they changed their name to Chad Allan And The Reflections and later as Chad Allan And The Expressions. It was this incarnation that landed a recording contract with Quality Records. However, getting Canadian music played on the bulging American influenced Canadian radio stations was tough so Quality issued the single with a white label and the words Guess Who? written on it. The record was released in 1965 and went on to sell 2 million copies. After two albums Allan's vocals were beginning to suffer from the grind of 10 years of performing in smokey clubs and he quit to return to school. The Guess Who would go on to be world famous with tunes such as "These Eyes" and "American Woman" but guitarist Randy Bachman felt that after hitting such a peak there would be nowhere left to turn but down and so also quit the band.
