James Jerome From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search James Alexander (Jim) Jerome, PC March 4 August 21 ) was a Canadian jurist and former politician and Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons After receiving his law degree from Osgoode Hall in Toronto , Jerome began his law practice in Sudbury, Ontario . In , he won a seat on Sudbury's city council and, the next year, attempted to win election to the Canadian House of Commons in a by-election but was defeated. He took the seat in the 1968 general election , however, and became the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sudbury riding After the 1972 election , Jerome became Chairman of the Standing Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs. Since there was a minority government in place, the opposition had a majority of members on the Committee and Jerome had to remain impartial and balance the wishes of all parties in order to win approval for legislation. His success in this role led Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to appoint Jerome as Speaker of the House of Commons following the 1974 election In the 1979 election , Jerome considered following the precedent set by his predecessor, Lucien Lamoureux by running as an independent as is the custom of the Speaker of the British House of Commons . Jim Alexander's Home Winemaking Site I am an avid home winemaker in Boulder, Colorado and I like sharing my opinions and what I learn with others. My interest in wine began while living in Wiesbaden Germany, which is the heart of Germany's white wine region. My real appreciation and knowledge of the intricacies of wine came later while living in the San Francisco Bay area through multiple tasting at wineries in the Monterey Central Coast region and Napa Valley. I help out when I can at two wineries in Boulder. I make about 20 cases each year of Bordeaux and Italian style wines for my family and friends. In addition to the wine, I make red wine vinegar aged with French oak, apple and cherry wood. I also published an article on oak cubes in the February 2004 issue of Winemaker Magazine. There are multiple books, magazines and web sites dedicated to winemaking. Unfortunately, some of the information contained in these sources is incomplete or outright wrong. time-4-change Home About Media ... The Arclight Centre The Arclight centre is on Leeman Road, across the road from the national railway museum. Since becoming a Councillor, I wanted to find out more about what the centre does. The centre is a hostel for the homeless who have links in York. Some residents are from York and the surrounding areas, some have lived here for a number of years and some have family here. Last Sunday I volunteered here for the first time. Jim Banks, a joyful man with great sense of humour and confidence, greeted me. Jim came originally from Bradford and has lived all over the world. He was cooking burgers, chips, gravy and beans for York’s homeless. It was my job to flip the burgers into the buns and to wash up. I also served some food to the residents. As a Councillor I obviously sit in meetings that approve large-scale programs to help people. However, very little of the time I get to see delivery or what many would consider as front line action. This is why it was so rewarding to be doing something that you knew was making a difference now… not in the future, not may be later, but now. The residents were polite, well mannered and cleaned up after themselves. I was surprised at the lack of bravado portrayed by the residents, which is sometimes symptomatic of some of their mannerisms in town.
