Col. Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin Jr.

Apollo 11 crewmen Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., took their first historic steps on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong is shown here stepping off the lunar module (LM). Aldrin followed him 20 minutes later. During their 2 hours 31 minutes outside the LM, the two men planted the United States flag, collected 22 kg (49 lb) of lunar rocks and soil, and deployed scientific equipment to study the solar wind and measure seismic tremors in the moon's interior and on its surface.
COL. EDWIN E. ALDRIN, JR.
Awarded by
President Richard M. Nixon
August 13, 1969 As a member of the crew of the United States Spacecraft Apollo Eleven, he participated directly in a unique and profoundly important adventure. The accumulated scientific knowledge and technological ability of mankind made man's first step on the moon practicable; the courage and skill of men like Col. Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. made it possible. His contribution to this great undertaking will be remembered so long as men wonder and dream and search for truth on this planet and among the stars. NAME: Buzz Aldrin, Ph.D. (Colonel, USAF, Ret.)

    Buzz Aldrin
Astronaut Born: 20 January 1930 Birthplace: Montclair, New Jersey Best known as: The second man on the moon Name at birth: Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr. Buzz Aldrin was the second human to walk on the moon. On July 20, 1969, he followed Neil Armstrong onto the lunar surface while a third American astronaut, Michael Collins , remained in orbit overhead. Aldrin attended West Point, flew fighter jets in the Korean War, and then earned a doctorate in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining the NASA astronaut corps in October of 1963. He flew on the Gemini 12 space mission (launched 11 November 1966) and then was chosen as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the surface of the moon. The success of Apollo 11 made Aldrin, Armstrong and Collins international heroes. Since his retirement from NASA, Aldrin has been an unabashed booster for space exploration. He founded Starcraft Boosters, a private rocket design firm. His autobiography, Return to Earth was published in 1973. He also wrote the sci-fi novels

CLAVIUS PHOTO ANALYSIS
footprint
NASA: AS11-40-5877
This is supposedly the first footprint on the moon.
NASA makes no such claim. Armstrong did not photograph his first step. The subsequent activity around the forward footpad would have quickly erased the first footstep. This photo was taken at approximately 110:03:00 GET by Buzz Aldrin as part of an experiment to test the characteristics of lunar soil. He first photographed the area before the footprint. Then he took a step forward to make this print, then stepped back again to photograph it. He also took another photograph nearby with his boot in the picture after having made the print. [ALSJ, Apollo 11 photo commentary]
Why does it look like The toe curls up?
The bottom of the print is not planar, as the shadows of the tread ridges suggest. The lunar surface boots had flexible rubber soles and adjusted to the contours of the surface like any other footwear. Buzz took this footprint especially so he could photograph it. He placed his foot forward, rested his weight on it, and then removed his foot. Try doing this yourself. Stand upright, take a step forward, and then pull your foot back. If you do this without consciously controlling, you'll notice a tendency to push off with your heel. This would cause the heel to dig in slightly deeper, as we see in this photograph. The photo bears the characteristics we expect knowing how it was made. [Ibid.]
How can a footprint cast such a big shadow?

The Docking Module (formerly "Leon's Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space Page")
Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space is a highly innovative computer game which was written shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union. It's a simulation of the US-Soviet Space Race. This is a game for one or two players; you choose one of the two superpowers, head that country's space program, and try to beat your opponent to the Moon. The game has a lot of wonderful features, including a whole range of different ways to get to the Moon. You can follow in NASA's footsteps and fly Apollo, or try the Soviet strategy of sending up a Soyuz capsule on their ill-fated N1 moon rocket. You could even fly a Gemini to the Moona proposal that NASA eventually rejected in favor of Apollo. Alternatively, you might decide we were wrong to get away from the idea of reusable spacecraft, and put NASA back on track toward an early type of Space Shuttle. Or you might even take the science-fiction-inspired Direct Ascent approach with one big capsule that does it all! Not enough variety? How about a Soviet scheme to land an entire Soyuz capsule on the Moon? Growing up, I loved to read about the history of the Space Race, about the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions (back then we didn't have much information about the Soviet space program), about how we went to the Moon, and I'd wonder why we didn't adopt reusable spacecraft back with the Dyna-Soar. When I saw this game on the shelves back in '93, I was blown away. Now I could fly to the Moon

Buzz Aldrin keynotes Grand Canyon Skywalk opening ceremony Indian leaders and former astronauts stepped gingerly beyond the Grand Canyon's rim Tuesday, staring through the glass floor and into the 4,000-foot chasm below during the opening ceremony for a new observation deck. By Chris Kahn, Associated Press
March 20, 2007 Related Stories "I can hear the glass cracking!" Hualapai chairman Charlie Vaughn said playfully. Editor's note: Have you visited the Skywalk? If so, is it worth the price of admission? Weigh in with your comments and feedback on on our new Travel Message Boards The deck is anchored deep into a limestone cliff. As people walk across it, the glass layers creak and the deck wobbles almost imperceptibly. To one side, the Colorado river appears as a slim, pea-green ribbon. To the other is a triangular dip in the canyon's ridge, known as "Eagle Point" because it looks like a bird with outstretched wings. When the wind blows, only the most daring visitors resist grabbing the steel rail to steady their knees.

5 Questions For Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
TFK: Should the United States have gone back to the moon in the past 30 years? Buzz We went six years without even flying an American in space, from 1975 to 1981. That is unforgivable. TFK: Are you upset at the way NASA decided who would be first on the moon? Buzz What NASA did was absolutely correct. It would have been unacceptable for the (mission's) commander to (wait) while his copilot made the first historic step. TFK: Why did you leave NASA after returning home from the moon? Buzz It would have been pretty hard to top the moon landing. I left to continue my career in the U.S. Air Force. TFK: Have you thought of running for political office?
