    Moonwalker on the run
Posted: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 7:00 PM by Alan Boyle
Buzz Aldrin's head is buzzing with ideas – ranging from spaceship-building projects to film appearances to, yes, commentary on lovelorn astronaut Lisa Nowak's travails. The 77-year-old moonwalker sadly notes that people know more about the allegedly diaper-wearing astronaut than about NASA’s program to go back to the moon. And over the next five years, Aldrin intends to do something about that.

Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin — shown here in Mojave, Calif., during the SpaceShipOne flights — says he is working on a contest that will offer spaceflights as top prizes.
MSNBC staff and news service reports NEW YORK - Moonwalker Buzz Aldrin announced plans on Tuesday for a prize contest that would send the winner into space in a bid to spread the dream of extraterrestrial travel beyond the super-wealthy. Aldrin, who followed Apollo 11 crewmate Neil Armstrong onto the moon after the first manned lunar landing in July 1969, said the venture would be run through his ShareSpace Foundation , which he set up to promote interest in science and space travel in schools. Details of the competition are still sketchy, with the legal status of selling tickets still to be resolved, Aldrin said at a space investment conference on Wall Street on Tuesday. He said the idea was to offer the top prize of a flight into Earth’s orbit, but it was not yet decided on what spacecraft.

BUZZ ALDRIN
By Ernst Betterman Photo By Aaron Farley Buzz Aldrin is the most verbal and visible of all Apollo astronauts. Of the 24 individuals who either circled the moon or landed on it, he is the one we most easily recognize. The Toy Story character, Buzz Lightyear, was modeled after him. And in September 2007, when Google co-founder Larry Page wanted to make a media splash with his company’s $30 million Lunar X-Prize—an award to be split between the first two private sector teams that can soft land on the Moon, robotically roam for at least 500 meters, and transmit a Mooncast back to Earth—he had Buzz stand at the podium to sell the idea. Buzz has written novels, scientific papers and worked on screenplay treatments. He was an ace fighter pilot in the Korean war, earned a doctorate from MIT seemingly in his spare time and he is the second man in the history of the human species to set foot on a celestial body other than earth. With all this activity, public presence and PR savvy, you’d think we’d know Buzz better. After all, he is unflinching in allowing his human side to be seen by the general public. He talks openly about his three marriages. The tabloids tell us he has had cosmetic surgery, which at 77 years of age, he does not deny. Indeed, he is one of the fittest and most vigorous septuagenarians you are likely to meet. He is also extremely forthright in explaining his personal history of depression, alcoholism and recovery. So we feel a sort of facial familiarity with Buzz. Except for that extraordinary moment when he was on the moon, he seems a lot like us. He’s had his failed relationships. Cosmetic surgery represents 14% of all healthcare expenditures in the United States. Some form of addiction has directly or indirectly impacted 63% of all Americans. And when it comes to depression, it is at least as common as cosmetic surgery.

Aldrin was the second man in history to walk on the moon
Californian authorities have decided against prosecuting former astronaut Buzz Aldrin after he punched a documentary maker who claimed his moon missions were faked. Astronaut was called "a liar and a coward"
Mr Aldrin, famous for his participation in the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, hit Bart Sibrel after he approached the former astronaut outside a hotel in Beverley Hills, Los Angeles and demanded he swear on a Bible that the landing was not staged. Mr Aldrin responded by punching Mr Sibrel, but said he merely struck out to defend himself and his stepdaughter, who was with him at the time. Beverly Hills police investigated the incident, which occurred 9 September, but said that the charges were dropped after witnesses came forward to say that Mr Sibrel had aggressively poked Mr Aldrin with the Bible before he was punched. 'False pretences' Witnesses also told police that Mr Sibrel had lured Mr Aldrin to the hotel under false pretences in order to interview him.

      The Buzz About Aldrin
December 30th, 2006 by Dave Phillips
For the past month I've been building and playing with Leonard 'paniq' Ritter's Aldrin , a music production system that combines a tracker-style composition interface with audio synthesis and processing modules called machines. Users of the famous Buzz music software will probably recognize Aldrin's design at once. In fact, it may be fair to describe Aldrin as Leonard Ritter's interpretation of the original Buzz. For my last blog entry in 2006 I'll take a brief look at the latest public version of Aldrin, then we'll discover just what makes its creator tick in a rather lengthy interview with Leonard Ritter himself. Leonard is a thoughtful and articulate fellow, I hope you enjoy his responses and comments as much as I did.

Sundance 2007: Buzz Aldrin Speaks
By Jennifer Hillner Categories: Sundance 2007 There are only twelve human beings who have ever left the Earth’s atmosphere, hurled through space at unbelievable speeds, and successfully landed on another world. They are the astronauts of the Apollo space program, which flew to the moon nine times between 1968 and 1972. President John F. Kennedy called their endeavors the most dangerous, and most important, adventure upon which man has ever embarked. Now director David Sington brings the 10 surviving Apollo astronauts back into the public eye with his documentary, In the Shadow of the Moon . In their own words, the men candidly describe their experiences on launch day, their thoughts while standing on the moon, and the personal impact of being named a world hero. Sington splices together these intimate portraits with jaw-dropping, never-been-seen-before NASA footage of launches, Mission Control, and humans in space, as well as newsreels of the day. In the end, the film is a celebration of courage and technological achievement. I sat down with Apollo 11 vet Buzz Aldrin two days after his seventy-seventh birthday to talk about the movie, his views on the space program today, and what the future holds. Me : Happy belated birthday. How did you celebrate?

On July 20, 1969, Aldrin became the second human being to set foot on the moon. He served as the pilot of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, the capsule that descended to the surface of the moon ( see Apollo program ). Aldrin also flew into space during the Gemini program (a precursor to the Apollo program) and is one of the world’s leading advocates of space exploration. He has more than 4500 hours of flying time, including 290 hours of spaceflight and 8 hours in space outside of the spacecraft. He is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and numerous other U.S. and international awards. Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr., was born in Montclair, New Jersey. Aldrin later legally adopted his childhood nickname, Buzz. He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1951. He entered the U.S. Air Force after graduating from West Point and earned his air force pilot’s wings in 1952. He served as a combat jet pilot during the Korean War (1950-1953). Aldrin temporarily left flying in 1959 to enter graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He planned to complete a master’s degree and then apply for test pilot school, but he instead earned a Ph.D. degree in aeronautics and astronautics in 1963. His thesis subject was the study of piloted rendezvous (bringing piloted spacecraft into close proximity with each other). His thesis dedication reads, “The men in the astronaut program. Oh that I were one of them.” Techniques he devised are used on all space rendezvous and docking flights.

Mario? Check. Septuagenarian? Check. Those are checklist items one and two for shilling a Wii game, according to the new Nintendo marketing philosophy. This time, the old dude bringing credible wrinkles is famed astronaut Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin who recently joined an underpaid chap in a Mario suit for a zero gravity flight to promote Super Mario Galaxy . The flight is quite similar to the one our own part-time plumber Mike Fahey enjoyed when he took to his digestive tract on a wild sky ride with Richard Garriott More pictures of Mario filling the inside of this giant Mario head mask with partially digested mushroom soup after the jump.
