Ira Frederick Aldridge was born on July 25, 1807 in New York City. His father Daniel, who was a lay preacher and straw vendor, and his mother, Lurone, were free blacks. Ira's mother died in 1818, when he was a boy. Ira attended the African Free School where he won many oratory contests. After Ira's father remarried, he ran away from home. The audiences loved Aldridge's performances, however he received bad reviews from the press. In order to improve his acting skills, he toured the provinces, including Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Lancaster and Liverpool. For seven years, he starred in the plays, "Oroonoko," "The Slave," "Othello," "The Revenge," and "The Padlock." Herbert and Stock, the authors of the biography "Ira Aldrige," explain the significance of Aldridge's Liverpool appearance: Go To Page: 1

The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, damages 40s. The verdict obviously went in Aldridge's favor. Though found guilty of "criminal conversation" with Emma Stothard, he was required by the court to pay only a nominal penalty. Had William Stothard been a better husband, Aldridge could have suffered sterner consequences, but he had an able attorney who knew how to exploit to good effect the plaintiff's glaring faults of character and conduct.

IRA ALDRIDGE
Ira Aldridge, one of the most famous Shakespearean actors of his time. Also known as the African Roscius , his career on the British stage spanned 30 years. He performed in the UK and in Europe as the star in melodrama, romantic drama, operetta, comedy and Shakespeare, with his most famous role as Othello at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden. He rose to become one of Europe's leading performers and more honours were showered upon him than any other actor, breaking racial barriers during a time when many of his black American contemporaries were still enslaved.
Ira Aldridge was born near New York City in , his parents Reverend Daniel and Luronah Aldridge, were "Free Blacks". He went to school at the African Free School in New York , (where many prominent figures in the US abolitionist movement were also educated) and then at his fathers request attended Schenectady College, to study theology. He didn’t complete his stay there and left to pursue his love of acting. He had a natural talent and became active in New York’s amateur theatre scene . Aldridge gained acting experience with the African Theatre, an endeavour established by free black Americans in 1820. He made his acting debut as Rolla, a Peruvian character in the Richard Brinsley Sheridan adaptation of August von Kotzebue's Pizarro.

In the past few decades, African Americans have begun to uncover a history that was largely discarded, overlooked, and ignored. It is usually the case that history books are written by and for those in power and reflect their point of view.

Web Lecture #2
African Grove Theater
Lesson Overview This online lecture will discuss the first African American theater company in the United States, the African Grove Theater. Free Blacks established the theater in New York City in 1821. Even though the company folded after only two years of play production, the theater was important because it provided an opportunity for African Americans to present plays that gave them dignity. The lecture will also discuss the arrival of African Americans in the United States and the lifestyles that determined their daily activities.

African American Presence in the United States
Most African Americans arrived in the United States as enslaved people between 1619 and 1808. Many were transported to work on small farms and plantations in the South, however; many African Americans also earned their freedom and worked for small landowners or in the households of town dwellers. Between 1800 and 1810 the number of free Blacks in the United States doubled. By 1810, 75 percent of the African Americans who lived in the urban north were free. They were concentrated in the cities of New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Free Blacks in the north generally worked as domestic servants or in subsistence farming. There were some who worked as skilled artisans in trades such as blacksmithing or carpentry. Some free blacks also worked on the docks and in the shipping industry loading and unloading boats. The two men who founded the African Grove Theater, William Alexander Brown and James Hewlett, were stewards who worked on ships. Through their work, they were able to travel back and forth between England, New York, and the Caribbean and to see theatrical productions.

African American History: Names and Terms
A "lexicon" of relevant names and terms in African American History.
Saturday, December 29, 2007
INTRODUCTION
The compilation of this "lexicon" is intended to provide a brief and convenient guide to the vast array of significant names, terms and events associated with the history of black Americans. Although I have made an attempt to include most of the relevant names and terms common to African American History, this listing is not all-inclusive. Biographical entries, for example, are limited to deceased black Americans and references to current events are not emphasized. That notwithstanding, users of this blog are encouraged to contact me regarding significant omissions and errors. The names and terms are arranged alphabetically for your convenience. Much of the material presented here has been gleaned from my Lexicon of Afro-American History,
