General - History This Question Is Answered: digg_skin = 'compact'; digg_window = 'new'; Who was Ira Frederick Aldridge? 11 Feb 2007 01:01 Report Ira Frederick Aldridge was an African American Male actor who was born on July 24, 1804 in New York, New York and passed away on August 7, 1867.
Although he was born during the time of Slavery, he was born to a free family and he attended a free school. It was at this school where he got his first interest in acting.
When he was a teenager, Ira Aldridge was an actor in the city's first African American theater group, called the African Theatre. After the African Theatre closed in 1823, Aldridge emigrated to England. He became an acclaimed Shakespearean actor there, playing such roles as Macbeth, King Lear, and of course Othello. He toured extensively in Europe, where he enjoyed an even greater reputation than in England. Aldridge became known as the “African Roscius,” after the great ancient Roman comic actor. In 1863, he became an English citizen, and is believed never to have returned to the United States. Ira Frederick Aldridge 1807 - 1867 Buy books on Ira Aldridge In October 1825, a Black man took centrestage at the Royal Coburg Theatre (now known as the Old Vic) playing the role of Oroonoko in the Revolt of Surinam or A Slave's Revenge. The playbill advertising the show made reference to the actor being 'a man of colour', and emphasised the authenticity of his performance in a Black and noble role. But those who were attracted by the novelty of a Black actor on stage were in fact witnessing the rise of the first truly international Black 'superstar'. Ira Frederick Aldridge went on to become the most decorated actor of modern times. He was also an outspoken abolitionist in an era when slavery was endemic in the southern states of his native America . Aldridge was mercilessly slated by London critics for performances in Shakespearean roles that had been the exclusive domain of white actors. He was a thorn in the side of those opposed to abolition. They singled him out for vindictive attacks, though he was lauded by theatre audiences for his magnificence in classic roles - particularly Othello. Undeterred, he overcame his detractors. He toured successfully throughout Britain and Europe , attracting awards and plaudits for his outstanding performances. His triumphs in Russia gave him iconic status during his lifetime.

Ira Aldridge's relatives in New York City.
Ira Aldridge was one of the world's greatest actors, and a good amount has been written about him, (2) but not much is known about his family in New York City. Using statements made by Aldridge himself on playbills, in a diary he kept on one of his Continental tours, and in his application for British citizenship, Marshall and Stock were able to establish that he was born in New York City on 24 July 1807. (3) James McCune Smith, who had attended African Free School No. 2 on Mulberry Street while Ira was a student there, stated that his schoolmate was born "in Chapel Street (now West Broadway)" in lower Manhattan, (4) and Longworth's Directory for 1812 (5) confirms that Aldridge's father Daniel was living at the rear of 93 Chapel Street five years later, so it is more than likely true that this was the place where Ira was born.
Other documents suggest that he may not have been christened as Ira. For instance, in 1825 he signed his marriage certificate as Fredrick [sic] William K. Aldridge, (6) and on some of his earliest playbills and promotional materials in England the initials F.W. preceded his surname. Ira may have been only a nickname that he assumed several years later as his first name, for it was not until 1833 that he began appearing on playbills as Ira Aldridge. Toward the end of his life, both on his application for British citizenship in 1863 and on his last will and testament in 1867, (7) he identified himself as Ira Frederick Aldridge. William and K. had by this time disappeared from all his official signatures.
