Those of you who've been reading for awhile will remember that I went to not one but TWO nights of Demon Days Live last year (and took one lucky reader, as well!). I remember getting my hot little hands on Park Life at the tender age of 13, and the subsequent anticipation of Blur and . During that whole "Britpop" thing, I loved Blur, Oasis, and Radiohead, and I saw nothing wrong with liking ALL of them. Living across the pond, as they say, the whole Oasis vs Blur thing wasn't a big deal to me, and Radiohead seemed above it all, anyway. But as the bands started to sound less and less Britpop and went in different directions, there was a road to take. When came out, I had been pulled toward cavernous soundscapes, string arrangements, and bleepy rewired guitarhacks by Ok Computer I'll be honest. I didn't get it. Damon had gone into feedback, harsh, heartbroken territory, something raw, open, and bleeding, and I was ensconsed in the paranoia and withdrawn sounds that Thom Yorke was offering, something so cold that it eventually became warm. I was 21 before I went back and listened to and understood that William Orbit's stripped down, up front production wasn't a flaw (the balance is absolutely perfect on this record there's not a part I would bring forward or back in the mix) but letting the conflicting emotions of break-up come through on what seemed to be an inconsistent sound. It's a grown up record, about wanting someone back and wanting to push them away at the same time. The only thing that had come before that sounded anything like this kind of raw emotion from Blur, and not just cute songs about people in Britain and Yoko Ono was the stand-out (and stick-out, as in sore thumb) track on
