EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN began on radio in Boston in the mid-1970’s under the title “The Great Entertainer." The broadcast focused entirely on the music, career and life of a particular Star. Each Saturday morning, the Boston radio audience tuned in to listen to a show spotlighting such talents as FRANK SINATRA, BARBRA STREISAND, EDITH PIAF etc. The show was scheduled to debut in June but still lacked a name and theme song. In May, David interviewed PETER ALLEN, then starring on Broadway in his one man show “UP IN ONE." He found Peter to be “a gracious and terribly funny man.” The song came up in the conversation and the two decided almost on the spot that the song should serve as the title and theme song for the broadcast. The show aired on Tuesday mornings from June 1979 to January 1985. At that point it moved to the Sunday night/Monday morning overnight slot. The three-hour weekly broadcast developed a dedicated cult of listeners. Also, during this period a new segment was introduced. Tom resides with his wife, Jo-Anne in Buena Vista, Virginia where the southern part of the Shenandoah Valley begins its climb eastward into the Blue Ridge. Buena Vista is a small community on the Maury River eclipsed by its better known neighbor, Lexington to the west. In its history it was the focal point of the Shenandoah Valley land "boom" of 1889. The railroad still runs through Buena Vista and it was here after the Civil War that an arthritic Mrs. Lee detrained from Richmond to join her husband by canal boat up the Maury to Lexington where he had been installed as president of Washington College which would later honor his name too, as the Washington and Lee University.

(Students) David Akers '99 Some of my favorite memories of Tom involve watching him in action while teaching. He always displayed such an obvious respect and a genuine interest in his students from day one... Homework assignments were always graded with meticulous care; I often found that his responses to my homework answers were longer than the answers themselves! They always suggested ways to generalize my results, pointing me in new directions and opening my eyes to alternate solutions. I remember vividly the day when he memorized the class roll for a fifty-person class, and then called out names from memory during the first class meeting. One student wondered what the trick was. Convinced that Tom was using some memory trick, the student demanded that Tom read the names in 'some other order besides alphabetic.' Tom began reading the names in convincingly random order, and reached the end of the list without hesitating. One student was left un-called upon, something that Tom realized immediately. Unshaken, he singled out this student and asked why she wasn't on the roll for the class. She responded that she was just visiting that day, and thus not actively enrolled. Some might have seen this example as a showy display of Tom's amazing memory, but to me it represented something entirely different. The point was that Tom cared enough to memorize the entire class roll. Learning everyone's name before the first class enabled him to begin immediately the process of getting to know everyone on a personal level. It's no mystery why Tom has had so many dedicated student assistants over the years; by showing an open respect for them from the beginning, he gains their respect and admiration.

Tom Akers, instructor of mathematics and statistics at the University of Missouri-Rolla, is the recipient of a 2004 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Gov. Bob Holden and members of the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education recognized Akers and 72 other recipients during the Governor's Conference on Higher Education held Dec. 1 in Columbia, Mo. The awards, which are not monetary, are based on effective teaching, innovative course design and delivery, effective advising, service to the university community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement. Akers, a retired NASA astronaut, taught and served as principal of Eminence (Mo.) High School before joining the Air Force in 1979. He was selected into the NASA astronaut training program in 1987. He later served as commander of the Air Force ROTC program at UMR.
