(January 2007) Bud Abbott (left) and Lou Costello (right) Abbott and Costello William (Bud) Abbott and Lou Costello (born Louis Francis Cristillo) were an American comedy duo whose work in radio film and television made them one of the most popular teams in the history of comedy. Thanks to the endurance of their most popular and influential routine, " Who's on First? "— whose rapid-fire word play and comprehension confusion set the preponderant framework for most of their best-known routines—the team is, as a result, featured in the Baseball Hall of Fame . (Contrary to popular belief, however, the duo was not inducted into the Hall). Bud Abbott was born in Asbury Park, NJ, October 2 and died April 24 in Woodland Hills, California. Lou Costello was born in Paterson, NJ, March 6 and died March 3 in East Los Angeles , California.

Who's on First? by Abbott and Costello
The general premise behind the exchange has Costello, a peanut vendor named Sebastion Dinwiddle, talking to Abbott who is Dexter Broadhurt, the manager of the mythical St. Louis Wolves. However, before Costello can get behind the plate, Abbott wants to make sure he knows everyone's name on the team... Note: We mentioned above that words alone cannot do it justice. To that end we have included a complete audio sample in the Fast Facts of the original "Who's on First?" for you to listen to! "Costello: Look, you gotta pitcher on this team? Abbott: Now wouldn't this be a fine team without a pitcher. Costello: The pitcher's name. Abbott: Tomorrow. Costello: You don't wanna tell me today?" - Who's on First? by Abbott & Costello Who's On First? by Abbott and Costello A Word-for-Word Transcript Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. You know Bucky Harris , the Yankee's manager, gave me a job as coach for as long as you're on the team. Costello: Look Abbott, if you're the coach, you must know all the players.

Abbott and Costello , which debuted in 1952, was one of the most distinctive and acerbically funny of these video lungfish. The loosely connected skits conjured a seedy, hilariously cutthroat world in which there are two kinds of people: the one getting over and the ones getting gotten over on. Straight man Bud Abbott and whiny hustler Lou Costello combined their slapstick and pratfalls with a gleefully misanthropic sensibility; no one could be trusted, even, or especially the kids, as embodied by Stinky, the bratty urchin played brilliantly by The Three Stooges' Joe Besser. Larry David would make a living out of this attitude decades later, but as Abbott and Costello would say, they were on first. Abbott and Costello's Wacky Math
The Math in the Movies Web page ( http://world.std.com/~reinhold/mathmovies.html ) provides an annotated list of films in which mathematics plays some sort of role. The choices range from the calculus lessons of Stand and Deliver to the mystifying numerology of the 1998 thriller Pi. Among the notable omissions are several movies featuring the comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Probably most famous for their "Who's on first" baseball routine, Abbott and Costello made arithmetic shenanigans the basis of a number of their comic dialogs. Abbott and Costello became a comedy team in 1936, becoming popular on the burlesque stage, then achieving wider acclaim by performing on radio. Released in 1941, their second movie, Buck Privates, was a box office hit. In this World War II comedy, Abbott and Costello play tie salesmen who accidentally enlist in the army to avoid getting arrested. The mathematical centerpiece of Buck Privates is a word problem reminiscent of those spoofed by John Scieszka and Lane Smith in the delightful book Math Curse (see The Cow in the Classroom,

    Vladimir Putin listen up.
You now have an airtight defense against those who have savaged you ever since you temporarily cut off natural gas shipments to Europe a couple of years ago in a pricing dispute with Ukraine. It would make Abbott and Costello proud.
Last week, Turkmenistan made news by cutting off natural gas supplies to Iran. The Central Asian nation, the runt forever being picked on by neighborhood bullies, had been shipping 23 million cubic meters a day to Iran, but is tired of being short-changed by Russia and Iran for its natural gas and wants more money. Russia is now paying $130 a thousand cubic meters (versus $350 it plans to charge Europe); Turkmenistan presumably wants at least that much from Iran.
Here's where the story gets wind. You see, even though Iran buys natural gas, it also sells it. But this is an incredibly cold winter, and Iranians are freezing. The country needed those Turkmen imports. So it has

[More] Bud Abbott and Lou Costello’s "grand unifying monster" film and the first in their "Meet..." series, with the two bungling buddies as baggage handlers saddled with the ghoulish remains of Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and Frankenstein's monster (Glenn Strange). But once they arrive at their cargo's destination, a wax museum, the monsters revolt, with plans to purloin and transplant Lou's brain. The Monster is growing weak and his master Dracula has devised the perfect plan to restore his virility. The fat man takes the bait, which is in the shape of a woman. Director Charles Barton easily guides this ambitious effort which is chaotically comic throughout, despite an off-camera foot injury that confined Glenn Strange to a cast and prompted Bela Lugosi to fill in for him in one scene. This was last screen appearance of Universal's Frankenstein Monster, which had been introduced by Boris Karloff. The result is an unforgettable and unique combination of humor and horror.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO One of radio's most popular comedy teams, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello began their 30-year partnership in 1929, with Abbott serving as the perfect straight man and Costello as the bumbling, wisecracking man-child. The duo were veteran vaudeville and burlesque performers when producer Ted Collins signed them up for a series of appearances on The Kate Smith Show in 1938. They achieved national recognition by performing seasoned vaudeville routines for a national audience the most popular being a baseball routine called "Who's On First?". The classic routine became synonymous with the pair and a recording was sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956. Abbott and Costello starred in a 1940 summer replacement series for Fred Allen before signing with Universal Pictures. From 1942 to 1947, the duo enjoyed huge success in movies and on radio, where was a Thursday night fixture on NBC. The pair broadcast for ABC from 1947 to 1949, where they starred in a weekly evening series as well as a Saturday morning show aimed at their younger fans. Lou Costello died on March 3, 1959. Bud Abbott died on April 24, 1974.
