Return to Lesson Name: Subject: Calculus Teacher Name: Who Did It? Introduction: There is a lot of discrepancy in the world regarding the discovery of calculus. Some say it was Newton, while others say it was Leibniz. You will make an argument as to who you feel can be credited with the discovery of calculus. Task: Who discovered calculus first? Your assignment is simple. In your group of 5, choose a judge, a Newton impersonator and his attorney, and a Leibniz impersonator and his attorney. Process: First begin by assigning each person in your group a task to complete. For instance, the judge should be ready to question both sides ( Newton and Leibniz) just as a judge would in a courtroom. At the same time, the attorneys must be prepared to cross-examine the other side based on research and facts found from the web-sites. Finally, the impersonators must be prepared to stand firm in believing that he actually deserves the credit. Resources: Here are some great web-sites to try:

    The History of Calculus
    Why was calculus derived?
Calculus was first derived in order to solve problems such as finding:
    • The tangent of a line to a curve at a certain point The length of a curve The area of a region The volume of a solid The maximum and minimum values of quantities Distance, velocity or acceleration, given an equation in the from of the other two variables.
    Who discovered Calculus?
1 Isaac Newton (1642-1727) : He was born in the village of Woolsthorpe, England and studied at Trinity College in Cambridge. After moving home between 1665 and 1666 he discovered the fundamental principles of planetary motion and gravity but he tended to only tell his friends and colleagues his discoveries. It wasn’t until 1687 that he published his findings. 2 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646- 1716) : He was born in Leipzig, Germany. He became a law student at 15 years of age at the University of Leipzig and by the age of 20 he received a doctorate from the University of Altdorf. Following this he had a career in law and politics. Through his work he met several exceptional mathematicians, which inspired his discovery of calculus. One of his most famous discoveries is Leibniz’s Rule. However, unlike Newton he never received much praise for his discoveries.

Calculus is a branch of mathematics , developed from algebra and geometry , involving two major complementary ideas. The first, called differential calculus , is a theory about rates of change , and involves the method of differentiation , which permits mathematical functions velocity acceleration , and slopes of curves at a given point all to be discussed on a common symbolic basis. The second, called integral calculus , involves the idea of integration , and uses a general idea of area bounded by the graph of a function , to include related concepts such as volume The two concepts define inverse operations , in a sense made precise by the fundamental theorem of calculus . Therefore, in teaching calculus either may in fact be given priority, but the usual educational approach is to introduce differential calculus first.

The main ideas which underpin the calculus developed over a very long period of time indeed. The first steps were taken by Greek mathematicians. To the Greeks numbers were ratios of integers so the number line had "holes" in it. They got round this difficulty by using lengths, areas and volumes in addition to numbers for, to the Greeks, not all lengths were numbers. Zeno of Elea , about 450 BC, gave a number of problems which were based on the infinite. For example he argued that motion is impossible:- If a body moves from A to B then before it reaches B it passes through the mid-point, say B of AB. Now to move to B it must first reach the mid-point B of AB . Continue this argument to see that A must move through an infinite number of distances and so cannot move. Leucippus Democritus and Antiphon all made contributions to the Greek method of exhaustion which was put on a scientific basis by Eudoxus about 370 BC. The method of exhaustion is so called because
one thinks of the areas measured expanding so that they account for more and more of the required area.

This page may answer many of your questions about the secondary teacher education program (STEP) at Oakland University for those students interested in teaching mathematics at the high school level (grades 7 to 12, actually). The program is open both to undergraduates at OU, who will obtain a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics together with teaching certification, and to students who already have an undergraduate degree (in any subject), who will meet all the major, minor, and teacher education requirements and receive teaching certification, but will normally not receive a second bachelor's degree. This page has nothing to do with elementary education (for teaching at the K-8 grade level). Information on that program in general, and majoring or minoring in mathematics at the elementary level in particular, can be found on the Web page set up by the School of Education and Human Services (see also this page Further information can be found on the Web page describing the requirements for the math major, the
