Zola, Émile
Novelist, born in Paris. He became a clerk and journalist, then began to write short stories, beginning with Contes à Ninon (1864, Stories for Ninon). After his first major novel, Thérèse Raquin (1867), he began the long series called Les Rougon-Macquart, a sequence of 20 books described in the subtitle as "the natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire'. The series contains such acclaimed studies as Nana (1880), Germinal (1885), La Terre (1887, Earth), and La Bête humaine (1890, trans The Beast in Man). In 1898 he espoused the cause of Dreyfus in his open letter J'accuse, and was sentenced to imprisonment (1898), but escaped to England. He was given a great welcome on his return after Dreyfus had been pardoned (1899), but controversy over the affair continued to affect him until his death.

French author, who founded the naturalist movement.
Zola was born in Paris on April 2, 1840, the son of an Italian civil engineer. After his father's early death, he grew up in poverty. His first job was as a clerk in a publishing house. After 1865 he was able to support himself by writing verse, short stories, and literary and art criticism.
In January 1898, Zola wrote an open letter, published in the Paris newspaper L'Aurore. This was the famous "J'accuse" ("I accuse") letter, in which Zola attacked French officials for their persecution of the French artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus, who had been found guilty of treason. Zola died in Paris on September 29, 1902.
Most of Zola's works are available in English translation, and many of his novels have been adapted into plays as well as into motion pictures.

Émile Zola
The French novelist and critic Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola (1840-1902) was born on 2 April 1840 in Paris.
From 1843 to 1858 Zola lived in Aix-en-Province, in the southern of France, where he befriended the painter Paul Cézanne, who was a fellow schoolmate.
In 1858 he returned to Paris and, after a short study attempt, took a job as a shipping clerk. After publishing his first book "Contes à Ninon" in 1864 he quitted clerking and began a career as a writer.
Frequently his works appeared in newspapers and magazines. A few years later, in 1868, he began to write a series of novels in which he traced with scrupulous detail the story of a family during the Second Empire.
Zola gained worldwide attention in 1898 when he published a letter entitled "J'Accuse", offering support for captain Alfred Dreyfus, who had been arrested and charged with treason in 1894 by the French government. Zola accused the government of being anti-Semitic and of covering up the truth.
As a result Zola escaped to England to prevent his arrest, but returned to Paris in 1899. Dreyfus was cleared of all charges in 1906.

71. Zola, Émile
Émile Zola (18401902) achieved notoriety and renown in a number of fields, asart critic, political journalist, novelist, literary critic and theorist,

naturalism, he also enjoyed extensive influence in a number of countries, even in the English-speaking world. Despite his claims of scientific objectivity and disinterestedness, the provocative nature of his literary works and ideas and his readiness to engage in polemics made him a controversial figure for most of his career and have led to widely divergent assessments of his achievements. Zola's creative works have undergone thorough and extensive scrutiny, interpretation, and reevaluation in the last three decades. But his critical and theoretical writings still suffer from the discredit attached to his unconvincing theory of the "experimental novel."

. During the last few years of the Second Empire Zola launched into an independent career as a journalist, causing stirs not only for his political opposition to the imperial regime but also for his defense of Manet and the pre-Impressionist painters. In 1868 he embarked upon what would become his major literary achievement, a 20-volume series of novels, Les Rougon-Macquart

On this day in 1898 Emile Zola published his "J'Accuse" letter on the Dreyfus Affair in the French newspaper L'Aurore . It listed the eight people (including the President of the Republic) whom he held responsible for the scapegoat conviction of Captain Dreyfus for treason three years earlier. It was ultimately successful, but it also set off a chain of events that would force Zola to flee to England some say it also got him killed.
Alfred Dreyfus was the only prisoner on Devil's Island apart from the French soldiers, the only inhabitant. Although he was allowed a small library, the novels of Emile Zola were not allowed in it. Nor would Dreyfus discover until afterwards that it was Zola's voice which spoke out most passionately and daringly on his behalf, compelling the events which would eventually return him to France and clear him of treason.
