Related Web Site Who is Martha Matilda Harper? Martha Matilda Harper, entrepreneur and beauty expert, was born in Oakville (Ontario), Canada on September 10, 1857/68. [Harper’s birth date has been recorded as being either in 1857 or 1868. She reportedly used the 1868 date to make herself seem younger, but swore in an affidavit that the correct date was 1857.] Her parents were Robert and Beadie (Gifford) Harper. Harper received very little formal education as a girl. When she was six or seven years old, she was sent to work in the home of relatives who lived in Orno (Ontario), Canada. As a young woman, she emigrated to the United States to work as a domestic servant in the home of a minister in Rochester, New York. Harper had brought a formula for hair tonic (shampoo) with her to the United States and began making it in a shed of the home in which she worked. By 1888, she had saved enough money to rent an office in Rochester. There, she opened her first Harper Method Shop, a combination beauty parlor and factory for producing the shampoo. An important early marketing tool for Harper was her own hair, so long that it reached almost to the ground.

Clements Library The University of Michigan Appleby Family Papers Appleby Family Papers, 1862 August 27-1902 April 15 (Bulk dates, 1864-1870) Huntingdon County, Penna., ca. 327 items Background note: Martha Skinner McNeal (known to her friends as Mattie) and Thomas Appleby grew up together in the town of Shade Gap, located in Huntingdon County, in the southern part of Pennsylvania. Thomas Appleby, born May 2, 1843, was one of five boys, with brothers Daniel Curtlet Montague (January 17, 1840 - February 3, 1905), John Scott (June 26, 1847 - January 25, 1912), James Y. McGinnis (May 26 1850 - June 25, 1907), and George Sharrer (June 17, 1853 - 1930). The family had long been in Pennsylvania, beginning with John Appleby, who settled near Shade Gap around 1782. Tom's father, John (born October 17, 1813) died from being kicked by a horse on July 14, 1856, but Tom's mother, Priscilla Montague (June 26 1815 - June 20, 1892), kept the farm going successfully. Tom's grandfather, Daniel Montague, who owned a mill in nearby Shade Valley, apparently helped in raising the children. Tom worked in a store in Shade Gap before he volunteered to fight in the Union Army, joining Co. K, 202nd Regiment, from September 5, 1864 to August 3, 1865. His brother Daniel also joined the army (Co. I, 149th Regt., from August 19, 1862 to June 24, 1865). After returning home, Tom briefly was a "Professor" at Milliken's Bend Seminary, in Saxton, Bedford County. In 1866, he returned to store keeping and worked as a clerk for Grishinger and Rouse in Shade Gap.

Sherman Page 146 Following the close of the Civil War, when the United States Army turned its attention toward the West, a young captain from Massachusetts, Henry E. Alvord, who had served as a volunteer throughout the entire war and had then married a southern girl, Martha Swink, whom he had met during the campaigns in Virginia, was sent to Indian Territory to serve chiefly on staff duty with Generals Hancock and Sheridan. He was even then only 24 years old. His principal duty was the collection of facts about the territory and the Indians there, and for this duty, according to Major-General W. B. Hazen, he "evinced peculiar fitness" and his collection of facts "was always found to be accurate." Henry Elijah Alvord of Massachusetts became sergeant in the Rhode Island Cavalry on June 24, 1862; honorably mustered out the next October, but entered the Second Massachusetts Cavalry November 21, 1862. He became first lieutenant January 25, 1864, and Captain the eleventh of the next December. Honorably mustered out August 5, 1865, to became first lieutenant of the Tenth Cavalry July 28, 1866. Served as regimental adjutant from June 1, to July 31, 1867. Was made captain July 21, 1867, and assigned to the Ninth Infantry July 1, 1871. He resigned from the service next December. He died October 4, 1904.
