Charlotte M. Yonge
Many famous writers and artists were not so during their lifetime, but became more popular or famous after their death. Quite the opposite with Charlotte Yonge. In fact, few have heard or even know of her now. During her lifetime she was well-known and her books were read and admired by Louisa May Alcott, Lord Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Lewis Carroll, and many others. She wrote more than 200 books which includes school books, religious works, historical novels, and tales of everyday life which won her the hearts of many young readers during her time. See quote below, found in an old out-of-print, short story written by Louisa May Alcott, discussing the value of reading good books.
" I would take Alice’s advice and read up a little now; it’s so nice to know useful things, and be able to find help and comfort in good books when trouble comes, as Ellen Montgomery and Fleda did, and Ethel, and the other girls in Miss Yonge’s stories, " said Eva, earnestly, remembering how much the efforts of those natural little heroines had helped her in her own struggles for self-control and the cheerful bearing of the burdens which come to all. "
The quote above is found from a book published in the late 1800's. If they thought such books were of high moral content, what would we think of them today considering the moral decline of our time?

Charlotte Mary Yonge
British novelist was born as the daughter of a country squire in Ottenbourne (Mapshire). She was the only child for long time (her brother was born in 1831) but she made her *family* out of her dolls. She was brought up according to Edgeworth 's principles (it means, they taught her a LOT about what morality is). At the age of ten, she discovered Scott's books. In fact, most of her writing is clearly influenced by those authors. Her father educated her himself, and she was apparently a good pupil - when she was seven, she taught her own short lessons in the village Sunday school. There was a man in the village, called John Keble - he was a new vicar and had something to do with Charlotte's father. Keble saw Charlotte quite often and influenced her a lot - in fact, she claimed that after meeting him, she fell in love with religion. IN 1838, she published her first book, Le Chateau de Melville . The book was written in French. Keble encouraged her to write Sunday-school stories; the first one appeared in 1844 ( Abbeychurch, or, Self Control and Self Conceit)

Celebrating Women Writers!
Monday, April 5th, 1999

Hello everyone,
I hope most of you are enjoying good weather these days my family in Canada just got another 5 inches of snow! but here in Pittsburgh, the easter flowers are blooming outside. And thanks to all all of you who sent me easter greetings!
I'm happy to announce a couple of new on-line books, which have been given to the celebration recently. Alcott fans will be very happy to hear that "An Old-Fashioned Girl" (1870) is now on-line, thanks to the work of Doug Vanderploeg, Leslee Suttie, and myself. Congratulations to Leslee and Doug, who started working independently, then collaborated to finish,

Several BUILD-A-BOOKS are nearing completion, and many more chapters are waiting for me to proof-read (I'm not complaining!) "Indiana" by George Sand proved to be a very popular choice, and went out very quickly! The last of "England's Effort" by Mrs. Humphry Ward has also gone out, and several of the people working on it have mentioned how interesting they found it, and that they want to read the completed book. I have one or two chapters left of "Katrinka", the children's book, which may well be gone by the time you read this... so it's high time to announce some new books in progress!
The new titles will be:
