Arnold and appeared in Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation (1905). (Jones is referred to as "Gullivar" in League ; varying editions of the book had his name as "Gullivar" or "Gulliver.") Lieutenant Gullivar is about an American Naval officer who is transported to Mars via a flying carpet; once on Mars he has adventures with a group of friendly Martians and finds love with the Martian woman Heru before returning to Earth. Lieutenant Gullivar predates the first John Carter of Mars story by seven years; no one knows for sure whether Edgar Rice Burroughs read
