The Swiss Family Robinson Study Guide
by Johann Rudolph Wyss
About the Author Johann Rudolph Wyss was born in Bern, Switzerland, on March 4, 1782. He was educated in Germany and became a philosophy professor at the Bern Academy. He enjoyed studying Swiss history and folklore, and he published several books and articles on the subject in literary magazines. He wrote the words to the Swiss national anthem, ''Rufst du, mein Vaterland" ("Callest Thou, My Fatherland"). He died in Bern on March 21, 1830. It is almost certain that Johann Rudolph Wyss is not the actual author of The Swiss Family Robinson. He had the novel published in 1812 with his own..... A Note on Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson , Montolieu's Le Robinson suisse , and Kingston's 1879 text
Where indicated, the following is taken from The Oxford Companon to Children's Literature , edd. Humphry Carpenter and Mari Prichard (Oxford, 1995), p. 510; the other materials have been drawn from various scholarly studies and eighteenth-century texts as well as one 20th century anonymous review. The famous child's classic known in English as Swiss Family Robinson was written by a Swiss Pastor, Johann David Wyss (1743-1818). He was born in Berne, became an army chaplain, and is said to have told the story episode by episode to his four sons. According to the The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature , "he left the manuscript incomplete and disorganized ,and it was prepared for publication at Zurich in 1812-13 as Der schweizerische Robinson ;" its editor was his son, Johann Rudolf Wyss (1781 - 1830) who was a professor of philosophy at Berne. Montolieu produced the first French adaptation/translation in 1814 which included material she had added herself; "the first English translation was by probably the work of William Godwin and was published by his wife, M. J. Godwin in 1814 [but see below] as The Family Robinson Crusoe and described as a transation 'from the German of M. Wiss,' though it incorporated some of Montolieu's additions. The Godwin version was re-issued in a longer version in 1816, and the book's familiar title first used in 1818. In 1824 Montolieu produced a yet larger version in French; she added the adventures of Fritz, Franz, Ernest and Jack" (

Johann David Wyss' The Swiss Family Robinson
This young readers' classic first appeared in English in 1813. It began life as a manuscript story about a shipwrecked family that Johann David Wyss (1743-1818), a Swiss clergyman of Bern, read to his four sons. His son Johann Rudolf Wyss (1781-1830) established himself as a noted writer, philosopher and Swiss folklorist after graduating from university, and eventually adapted his father's manuscript into a novel.
The original Swiss edition, in German, was published in 1812 under the title Der Schweizerische Robinson, Oder der Schiffbruchige Schweizerprediger und Seine Familie. If it were literally translated, the English title could have come down to us as The Swiss Robinsons, or the Shipwrecked Swiss Preacher and his Family.
The novel's main characters are Pastor Robinson and his wife; their four sons, (ranging from 15 to 7 years of age) Fritz, Ernest, Jack and Franz; and their dogs, two mastiffs named Turk and Juno. They are shipwrecked on an island somewhere in the far southwestern Pacific, and defense against Malaysian pirates is an ongoing concern of the castaway family. After the Robinsons salvage livestock and goods from the shipwreck, they establish a highly elaborate settlement on the island that they eventually take to calling "New Switzerland."
Of course, the elder Wyss belonged to a generation that highly admired Daniel Defoe's famous castaway novel
