HS 299: History of Modern China Dr. Douglas Stiffler Spring 2004 I.H. Brumbaugh 103 Humanities 203 MWF 2:00-2:55 Tues. 10:30-11:30 stiffler@juniata.edu Course Description This course introduces the main themes, events and personalities that have shaped Modern China. The economically dynamic and increasingly powerful Modern China of our own day can only be understood in light of the legacies of Late Imperial Chinese history. In order to understand how a nation called China emerged in the twentieth century, we must first understand the nature of the Qing dynasty and its relationship to the wider East Asian and international orders. The coming of the West represented both crisis and opportunity. The Chinese gentry, and Chinese elites of the early twentieth century, sought new ways to reconstruct their empire/nation politically, economically, and culturally. In the latter part of the course, we consider the impact of radical ideologies on Chinese society, and will pay particular attention to the upheavals caused by the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Why Do We Launch the Collection Campaign of Artifacts Related to Dr Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Revolution? Apart from the artifacts in direct relation to Dr Sun, his family members and descendents, we are also expecting objects of other revolutionaries (such as Yang Quyun and Chen Shaobai), gentry-merchants (such as Ho Kai and HuangYongshang), reformers (such as Wang Tao and Kang Youwei) and politicians (such as Wang Chonghui and Wu Tingfang), who were either born, educated or enlightened in Hong Kong. Any memorabilia of the above-mentioned people, including their clothing, daily accessories, calligraphies, letters, diaries, photographs, visual and audio recordings, as well as old newspapers and magazines with coverage of their activities, fall within our scope of collection. It is expected that collection of the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum under preparation can be enriched through this campaign, thereby laying a solid foundation for its full operations in the years to come. Ink box engraved with Dr Sun's Testament and the two Chinese characters "°ûÁÉ" denoting the Chinese names of Sun Wan and Tai En-sai, Dr Sun's daughter and son-in-law respectively.

The Lessons of Defeat: Transforming the Qing State after the Boxer War Roger R. Thompson (Stanford University) Abstract: These four essays were first presented to an audience in Washington, D.C. in April 2002 at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies. Richard Horowitz, the panel organizer, argued that: the roots of China's modern state can be found in the Xinzheng or 'new policy' reforms during the last decade of the Qing dynasty. These reforms marked a radical departure for the Chinese state, involving a sustained effort to import foreign models and adapt them to Chinese realities. Although scholarship on reforms to provincial and local state institutions in this period is substantial, the transformation of the central government in Beijing has received little attention. Literary CSUDH A "Literary Los Angeles" article appeared in the "Book Review" section of the Sunday Los Angeles Times last spring. It cited published university authors and editors in the Los Angeles area, and inadvertently overlooked CSUDH in its compilation. Tim Woodhull, media relations director, compiled a report of CSUDH faculty and staff authors. Woodhull notes "these members of the campus community, whose works span the wide spectrum of fiction and non-fiction, deserve recognition." Following are the results of his survey. Excerpt
Late Imperial China
Wang Tao is widely recognized as a pioneer in the development of the Chinese press and in the intellectual revolution of modern China, especially as a transmitter of Western ideas. He is well known as a reform thinker intent on strengthening China at a time when the nation lay prostrate before imperialism. He features in a large number of articles and several monographs, most of them centered on his ideas and writings. However, although he spent some twenty years in Hong Kong

China's Rule of Law
Nobel Peace Prize
The Developing Rule of Law in China By Dr. Zhenmin Wang Dr. Wang is the vice dean at the Tsinghua University School of Law in China. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the East Asian Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School. His research interests include constitutional law, legal education, and comparative legal studies. Summary : Wang tells the history of the development of the rule of law in China, from the end of the Cultural Revolution, which almost obliterated the Chinese legal system, to the present day. He discusses the myriad difficulties facing China in the road to a modern legal system and the role that Hong Kong can play in China's legal development. An essential feature of any modern society is the rule of law, which can be broadly understood as a governing structure dependent on the consistent and systematic application of legal rules. This essay seeks to discuss the development of the rule of law in China. I. What the rule of law is
