advertise here N.B. December 1, 2002 Banning the Fez. One of the hottest issues in contemporary Turkish politics involves the question of whether Islamic dress (in particular, women's head scarves) should be allowed to be worn in public buildings. It seems a bit strange that something as apparently personal as a head covering would be causing such an uproar in a western-styled democracy. But headgear figures prominently in modern Turkish history and national identity witness the Turkish government's own account of the matter, a bracing read entitled " Hat Reform and the Revolution in Dress November 17, 2002 Reading the unreadable. "In 1864, the French lay missionary Eugène Eyraud the first known non-Polynesian resident of Earth's most isolated inhabited island, Easter Island reported in a letter to his superior that he had seen there 'in all the houses' hundreds of tablets and staffs incised with thousands of hieroglyphic figures..." In the world of alphabets and writing systems, there are only a few big unsolved mysteries. There's Etruscan, some varieties of ancient Persian, the Mayan glyphs, and (leave it to Easter Island), the 'Talking boards', semi-translated and related to just about nothing else, at least if you discount rumors of a connection with the also-undeciphered writing of the Indus valley civilizations, 4000 years previous and half a world a way. Begining with the Wuchang Uprising on October 11 and in the following two months, provincial military governments declared their independence from the Qing Empire under the name "Republic of China." Provisional Presidents
The "Republic of China" was formally proclaimed on January 1, 1912 and Sun Yat-sen took office in Nanjing as the first provisional president. Sun resigned on March 10 and was succeeded by former Qing Prime Minister Yuan Shikai. This moved the government to Beijing
Presidents ( Beiyang Government)
Yuan Shikai declared himself Emperor on December 22, 1915. The current ROC government considers the Beiyang Government after this point to be illegitimate. Popular opposition led Yuan to retract his declaration on March 22, 1916.

The Transnational (and Subnational) Worlds of Shanghai Newspaper Culture Bryna Goodman (University of Oregon) (draft prepared for the Urban Cultural Institutions in Early Twentieth Century China symposium; not to be cited) This paper is, in part, a response to a question posed at another conference on Shanghai, one which explicitly posed the much debated, if somewhat wearisome, question of civil society. The question, for papers dealing with the Republican era, was, "To what extent was Shanghai civil society in this period part of a global community?" Posing the civil society question this way, to me, suddenly offered a way out of the constraints of my thinking about "things public"I'm consciously avoiding using the terms "Chinese public sphere" or "Chinese civil society"in Shanghai. In talking about public associations and the press my tendency had been to identify them as Chinese . This locked me into both a rather static notion of Chinese culture, identity and behavioreven as I argued against such a thing and also averted my eye from all of the ways in which such cultural identification simply did not fit what I was seeing. My current research project involves various sites of the cultural production of new public behavior and notions of new public spaces in Shanghai in the early Republican era. Newspapers and newspaper culture are a prominent part of the story. Just a short engagement with the Shanghai newspaper world reveals how problematic the "Chinese" label is for many aspects of the Chinese language press of the city. Part of the point of this paper is to trace, in a preliminary fashion, the multiple ways in which the early Republican-era Chinese newspapers of Shanghai exceeded national labels and were transnational, in ways that need to be addressed and analyzed.

Although published in 1988, the Checklist of Missionary Collection is still an extremely useful guide to materials found in the Special Collections Department of the University of Oregon Library. Never before available outside of the University of Oregon Library Special Collections, this brief diary by a 15 year-old girl documents her experiences in the year 1891. Although some of the information merely provides color to an important period in Chinese history, Edith had encounters with notables in China's foreign community (particularly Sir Robert Hart). For this reason alone, the manuscript is worth the read.

    Special Workshop Abstract
Special Workshop Title: East Asian Jurisprudence Author: Chongko Choi, Professor, Seoul National University Paper Title: East Asian Jurisprudence: A Historical Introduction Abstract: East Asian countries of China, Korea and Japan which have a long tradition of civilization have received the Western jurisprudence since last hundred years. The current jurists are learning mostly the received Western legal sciences and jurisprudence. On the other hand, there is a new phenomenon; an awakening of East Asian Jurisprudence on the basis of their traditional value and philosophy. Due to the language barrier, East Asian jurisprudence is least known to the Western jurisprudential academism. As Arthur Kaufmann pointed out, the comparative jurisprudence becomes more important in the world of legal pluralism. This paper aims to survey the historical development of East Asian Jurisprudence according the legal philosophers from ancient to contemporary times.
