This listing of burials in a Colorado cemetery is a listing of only the burials where the headstone, or an associated marker, has an indication that the person belonged to one of the following organizations, or was a relative of the person who belonged to the organization. It is not meant to suggest that it is a complete listing of everyone buried in the cemetery, nor a listing of everyone from those organizations who is buried in the cemetery. For the most part the organizations began putting the identification on the tombstones in about 1880 and quit about 1935, though a few are occasionally seen with later death dates. Abbreviations WOW = Woodmen of the World MWA = Modern Woodmen of America Women = Women of Woodcraft Neigh = Neighbor of Woodcraft WC = Woodmen Circle SFWC = Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle * Upright stump. # Fancy horizontal sandstone log + Other odd shapes, ie., urns, balls, pillars

Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource
Early Artists
Mostly limited to artists born before 1900. A list of approximately 175 artists whose artwork depicts Mount Shasta, but does not include photographers. This is an ongoing list updated as of December 1991. Compiled from various sources including auction records, exhibition catalogs, art books, art gallery exhibitions, private collections, etc. Note that Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), traveling southward as naturalist with the 1841 Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition, lost his sketching materials while crossing the Umpqua Mountains in southern Oregon. No depiction of Mount Shasta by Peale is known to exist. Thus only his fellow expedition members, the world-reknowned geologist James Dwight Dana and the official expedition artist Alfred Thomas Agate, both of whom did sketch Mount Shasta, share the honor of creating the earliest bona-fide pictures of Mount Shasta. Titian Peale, because of his stature as an American artist and his presence at Mount Shasta in 1841, is included in the following list. Adam, William (1846-1931);

    Brief History: The earliest stones in the Green Valley Cemetery date to the 1830's and 40's when the land was part of the Sockman farm (ca.1820's). The cemetery grew rapidly in the 1860's after the first church building was erected across the road (1856) and has continued to expand since. Burial plots are now available in the new eastward expansion. Contact Green Valley UMC for information.

    Spring Street Store-Houses, Northwest of Moran Street
    This postcard view of the intersection of Spring and Moran Streets, taken about 1907, presents an excellent view of the southwest side of Spring Street. A granite tombstone at the left edge of the photograph marks O’Donnell’s Granite Works. In 1912, Fred Quick employed Thomas Farrell to build a Romanesque Revival three-story "concrete and brick" building at 116- 118 Spring Street on the site of O’Donnell’s stone cutting yard. Plaza Restaurant opened in the Quick Building in 1936. On the corner of Spring and Moran Streets, the McCarter Building, 115 Spring Street , is a brick row storehouse with Italianate elaboration, built for John McCarter, Jr. in 1864. In March 1864, Reuben Hayne opened the Newton Photographic Gallery on the "third story of John McCarter’s new brick building." In April 1864, James Decker opened a grocery, provision and liquor store, continuing until John McCarter and George Harden purchased his stock in August 1865 and entered trade. At that time, J. Percival advertised a "Photo graphic Gallery" upstairs. In December 1865, a shooting gallery opened in the Sussex Billiard Room over McCarter & Harden. The partnership dissolved in February 1866, with John McCarter continuing at the old stand. In December 1871, Benjamin Stewart’s stove and tin shop occupied the main store room. In January 1872, John and Catherine McCarter conveyed the storehouse to Jacob Swayze. Job Woodruff opened a hardware store here on April 1, 1872. In November 1873, a Masonic lodge leased a room over Woodruff s Hardware Store that was "fitted with an arched ceiling, closets and ante rooms, etc." The new Masonic Hall was dedicated February 12, 1874.
