I have been working on manually transcribing records and headstones at the
Catskill Town Cemetery, formerly Jefferson Rural Cem. It is only a partial record at this
stage, the collection is on-going. However, there won't be many updates
until the weather is better. I think cemetaries must be the coldest dampest
place on earth, no pun intended. MYERS

TRYON CEMETERY
SECTION # 1
Tryon, Polk County, NC
By W. D. Floyd To get to this cemetery from Tryon, NC take East Howard St. which leaves US-176 at the traffic light at the City Hall. Follow E. Howard St. and find Grady Avenue going off to the left. Follow Grady Ave. and find Markham Road bearing off to the right. Follow Markham Road and the cemetery will be on your left. I started the survey June 18, 2001 and I started just to the right of the gate. I will call this Section # 1 and it is the part that stays between the driveway and the boundary of the cemetery. It goes completely around the cemetery. The survey was completed June 19, 2001. There are plenty of unmarked graves and some graves marked with fieldstones. There are lots of markers that are gone and some broken and down. The cemetery is pretty run down to be one kept up by the town of Tryon, NC. This is the worst kept of any that I have been in that the grass mowing and maintenance is provided by a town.

Some Early Residents
I welcome information for this page via e-mail . Newspaper obituaries of some of these persons can be seen on the web site of the West Pasco Historical Society . This page was last revised on Sept. 8, 2005. CHARLES B. ANDERSON (died, 1943, at age 79) was a prominent citrus grower in Elfers, long active in the affairs of the Florida Citrus exchange. He was born in Streator, Ill., and lived in Montana until 1918 when he came to Florida with his wife Mary A. Anderson. They originally settled in the Lake Hamilton area. In 1937 he bought 70 acres of citrus groves in Elfers. Anderson died July 8, 1943, at his grove home near Elfers. Mary Anderson died in 1960. In 1983 Pasco County purchased his two-story home, which has several unsual features. The Pasco Arts Council moved into the home in 1986. Dr. ELROY McKENDREE AVERY (1844-1935) moved from Cleveland to New Port Richey after retiring in 1919. He was the first mayor of New Port Richey and the first president of the First State Bank of New Port Richey. The following is an entry in the 1950 AVERY, Elroy McKendree (1844-1935), American author, born at Erie, Mich. He fought in the Civil War, retiring with the rank of sergeant-major. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1871, taught in various Ohio schools, and from 1893 to 1897 was a member of the State Senate. He became the first mayor of New Port Richey, Fla. (1924-25), and was founder and president, for 10 years, of the Avery Public Library of New Port Richey. Among his publications are elementary textbooks in physics and chemistry, which have been much used in the public schools throughout the United States; also
