That world came smack up against the real world during World War II, when Wodehouse, taken prisoner by the Germans from his house at Le Touquet, outside Paris, subsequently did a series of five light-hearted broadcasts from Berlin on what life was like in a POW camp. For this he was, for a period, back home, widely and roundly blasted as a collaborator and worse. Mama, mama, I feel sick. Send for the doctor, quick, quick, quick. 1. Introduction to the Subject and the Books
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the same light touch of gentle satire. Wodehouse is best known as the creator of the dim and affable young bachelor Bertie Wooster and his invincible gentleman valet Jeeves. In the books Jeeves’ tasks are many. He dresses Bertie. He provides cures for Bertie's lovesick chums. He protects Bertie from his Aunt Agatha. To top it all, he makes a neat bourbon and soda. And the reason Jeeves is such a brainy chap has to do with large amounts of fish and hat sizes. Jeeves knows everything, and can foresee a way to handle any situation, no matter how sticky. In the words of his young employer Bertie Wooster, "[Jeeves] virtually lives on fish if I had even half his brains, I would take a shot at being Prime Minister or something

Language in P.G. Wodehouse's Ukridge's Accident Syndicate Leena Rahko During his life, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) managed to produce about a hundred books and in addition to them, several scripts, lyrics and short stories. He was a celebrated author in his days and has entertained many eager readers since with his outstandingly sharp-witted writing and sharp-sighted character drawings. Personally I think his popularity is indeed due to the exceptional characters his writing is bulging with. In their shortcomings and humanness, they are really easy to relate to, but even if that is not the case, none of the Wodehouse’s characters leave you cold. In spite of the obvious humorous elements in them, every one of the characters succeeds in being really alive, which is mostly due to the rich and living language P.G. Wodehouse uses in his works in a masterly way. Although born in Britain, P.G. Wodehouse lived in America for several years and took American citizenship too. America is the scene for some of his stories, but no doubt his best-known works are about British people acting in a British way in their homeland Britain, using characteristic British English. Two of Wodehouse’s most popular characters are perfect examples of stereotypical Englishmen; carefree and wealthy bachelor Bertram Wooster and his ever so faithful and smart manservant Jeeves fall over to using British expressions and being as polite as only an Englishman can be. Compared to the recognizable upper class register Bertie and Jeeves use, Wodehouse has created some characters that settle for slightly less florid style in their utterances and are known to have used slightly more uncultivated expressions than we would expect to hear for instance from Jeeves.

Phrase The noted Anglo-American humorist Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) led, up to 1940, a life which was professionally very active and successful, but devoid of striking or soul-shaking experiences.1 In that year, however, there occurred an event which changed the course of his life very drastically for the next six years, and cast a lasting, though gradually diminishing, shadow over the rest of his existence until his death on February 14, 1975. He and his wife were living semi-permanently at Le Touquet, in France. The town was captured by the Germans on May 22, 1940, and on July 21, he, with the other male aliens in Le Touquet, were sent off to internment-centers, first at Huy in Belgium and then at Tost in Upper Silesia. His internment lasted until June 21, 1941, on which date he was released (solely because he was almost sixty) and was sent to Berlin, where he was joined by his wife (who had been detained in France). Up to this point, nothing untoward had happened except the detainment itself. Soon after arriving in Berlin, however, he undertook to write and

English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright, famous as the creator of Jeeves, the perfect 'gentleman's gentleman,' Bertie Wooster of the Drones Club, a young bachelor aristocrat, and the absentminded Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle. Most of Wodehouse's work gently parodies the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II Wodehouse lived in the United States. During the decades of his absence Wodehouse's picture of England became increasingly distanced from reality, until finally the country is depicted as a place where time stands still and the real problems of the human condition are dismissed with laughter. "You know Jeeves, you're by way of being rather a topper."

On Wodehouse
From the Washington Post: The Whole Jolly Lot There are very few compelling reasons to be glad that one was born in the twentieth century," New Yorker critic Anthony Lane has written, "and most of them are curative: heart transplants, the polio vaccine, the look on Grace Kelly's face. Then, there is Wodehouse." Born in 1881, in Guildford, England, the creator of Jeeves and Bertie turned out almost a hundred books before expiring on Long Island in 1975. Most are still in print. To read the recently published "Wodehouse: A Life" and to chat over coffee and eggs Benedict with the biographer, McCrum, is to be reminded just how Yet there's another essential aspect of Wodehouse that may help explain his continuing appeal. Tribute to the Queen Mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1900-2002
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, 1881-1975
In the library of Lambeth Palace the Archbishop of Canterbury took another sip of Buck-U-Uppo while he wrestled with his sermon for the Queen Mother's funeral. "How do we combine her majesty, grandeur even, with her fun, and the love for her that everyone has?" he said to his old friend and colleague, Augustine Mulliner, now Bishop of Monkton. "Strength and dignity are her clothing and she laughs at the time to come. Proverbs, 25, 31," replied Augustine. "Masterly" said the Archbishop. "Brilliant. That hits it off exactly". And he wrote it in. The twentieth century was particularly the century of the Queen Mother. She was born as it began and died shortly after it had finished. Her death is sadder because to us it seems like the end of the Wodehouse century. Her devotion to Wodehouse reflects our own. Wodehouse has been the century's chronicler. We can better understand people in every walk of life because he wrote about them, and when we re-read Wodehouse we return to relive that century.

Watching Wodehouse
A success on DVD. By S. T. Karnick t is something of a truism that much of the best-written humor has not translated well to the screen. This is a special hazard for those who dare to adapt the works of the great British humorist P. G. Wodehouse (1881-1975). Wodehouse was widely acknowledged, by authors such as Orwell and Waugh, as one of the greatest prose stylists in the English language. They were correct, and the fact that this great gift was placed in the service of humor is one of the instructive ironies of life.
The first-person narration of wealthy London idler Bertie Wooster, in the numerous stories and novels Wodehouse wrote about him and his lifesaving valet Jeeves, is one of the great delights of English literature. A good prose style, however, is difficult to reproduce on the screen. (Voiceover narration, which is sometimes tried, is seldom effective and usually just a distraction.) Hence, Wodehouse's writing, though full of brightly drawn characters and dazzling dialogue, seldom transferred well to film during his lifetime. Few people particularly admire the Fred Astaire film

      Abstract:
James everywhere explores the implications of possession and possessions, of treating others as things even as things are granted sovereign value. Yet The Spoils of Poynton holds a special place in his career as a novel that pursues "possession" so persistently as to rethink all the word's implicationslegal, spiritual, psychological, sexualeven as its meaning seems increasingly obscure in conventional terms. Anticipating the moral conundrums of the late novels, James for the first time elaborates an ethos that commends our treatment of others as things, valuing our mutual possession of each other as a necessary, even beneficent, process. This essay explores the novel's elusive central ethical issue: how do we possess one another, and what might a marriage of equals require from one to preclude being simply possessed?

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in 1881 in Guildford, the son of a civil servant, and educated at Dulwich College. After working for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank for two years, he left to earn his living as a journalist and storywriter, writing the 'By the Way' column in the old Globe. He also contributed a series of school stories to a magazine for boys, the Captain, in one of which Psmith made his first appearance. Going to America before the First World War, he sold a serial to the Saturday Evening Post, and for the next twenty-five years almost all his books appeared first in this magazine. He was part author and writer of the lyrics of eighteen musical comedies, including Kissing Time An enormously popular and prolific writer, he produced about 100 books. In Jeeves, the ever resourceful 'gentleman's personal gentleman', and the good-hearted young blunderer Bertie Wooster, he created two of the best known and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. Their exploits, first collected in Carry On, Jeeves
