American Writers
COLONIAL TIMES IN AMERICA Between the founding of Jamestown (1607) and the signing of the Declaration of Independence (1776), scattered English settlements grew into a group of colonies ready to declare themselves a nation. The colonists changed from thinking and acting as Englishmen to full awareness of themselves as Americans. During this time almost all writing was devoted to spiritual concerns and to practical matters of politics and promotion of settlements. In New England, fiction was considered sinful and little poetry was written. A few interesting personal journals and diaries survive. Bradford, William
(1590-1657), historian'History of Plimoth Plantation'. Bradstreet, Anne (1612?-72), poet'The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America'; 'Contemplations'. Byrd, William (1674-1744), historian and diarist'History of the Dividing Line'; 'Secret Diary'. Edwards, Jonathan (1703-58), theologian'Personal Narrative'; 'The Freedom of the Will'. Knight, Sarah Kemble (1666-1727), diarist'The Journal of Mme. Knight'. Mather, Cotton

(13), 295, xix index, (2) colophon pages + foldout "synopsis of wine-making" at front. Bibliography pages 291-295. Inscribed on first blank endpaper: "Eberhard S. Buehler. Thirty-two years late! Philip Wagner. 27 Aug 1965." Green cloth, paper labels on cover and spine. Extremely poor condition. Covers water damaged and warped, labels gone, internally stained, mostly in gutter. Printing itself is clean enough to make reading not too great a chore. [Ref M1746 First edition. In his easygoing, easy-reading style, Wagner devotes the first hundred pages to a historical background on wine, especially in the US, devoting a full chapter to California. Then he goes on to his main topic, which is wine-making. He adds a brief appendix on grape districts of the US. Viticulture as such, he says, is well represented in the existing literature – Hedrick, Munson, Husmann. "My purpose in writing this book is to lay before the domestic winemaker the elements of the art. The book is in no sense original. I have … spurned the allurements of novelty. Originality in wine-making, save by a Pasteur, is always suspect …" [preface]. Parts of chapters 2 and 3 had appeared originally in Mencken's

The 1870s
Adams' broad sweep through the 1800s includes an analysis of the economic and social effects of the railroads, and speculates on the possible impacts of the airplane and automobile as he saw them at the turn of the century. Faulkner shows the arrival of the railroad in Mississippi, while Washington describes travel across rural Virginia. Wister explains its effects on the Western cattle industry. depicts settlement by wagon caravan just ahead of the trains in the Dakotas. Wilder's novels first show the dependency on rural Wisconsin on carriages and sleighs, and then dramatizes how small towns came to depend on the railroad for survival. Howells shows the moral and material consequences of railroad investments. James gives detailed scenes of the multiple transportation systems in eastern cities - all matter of carriages, railways, omnibuses, and horse cars in Boston, and the elevated trains in New York. Wharton focuses on the private carriages available to the wealthy in New York, and shows how carriages and trains were linked.

An Inventory of the Anna Wharton Morris Papers, 1729-1957
(68 boxes; 35 linear ft.) RG 5/106 Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Swarthmore, Pennsylvania 19081-1399 U.S.A. Table of contents Abstract Background note: BIOGRAPHICAL Anna Wharton was born in Philadelphia on July 15, 1868. Her father, Joseph Wharton (1826-1909), was a wealthy industrialist. He married Anna Corbit Lovering (1830-1914) in 1854 at the Cherry Street Meeting House in Philadelphia. Two children preceeded Anna: Joanna (1858-1938), who married Joshua Bertram Lippincott in 1885, and Mary Lovering (1862-1923), who never married. The Whartons moved to Ontalauna near Old York Road, Philadelphia, in 1881. Their summer residence, Marbella, was at Conanicut, west of Newport, Rhode Island. Anna was educated at Mrs. Head's School in Germantown and took private lessons in French and music. In June of 1896, Anna Wharton married Harrison Smith Morris, son of George Washington Morris and his wife, Catharine (Harris) Morris. Even though Morris was not a Friend, Green Street Monthly Meeting gave permission for the marriage to proceed under the care of the Meeting. The service took place at her father's house in the Quaker manner with over 140 witnesses. Anna Wharton Morris remained a member of Green Street Monthly Meeting and was active in the Society of Friends throughout her life.

Added col. pict. t.p., half-title. Burnham was born at Peterborough, Ontario, and became a lawyer and a member of parliament as well as a writer. (Rhodenizer p. 730). His Jack Ralston leaves his home in Montreal to join the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in Labrador where he quickly achieves a position of trust and leadership. Although the story is filled with exciting incidents, and a touch of romance, its main thrust is the hostility between the Eskimo and the Indians which the Hudson Bay people tried to ameliorate in the interests of trade. The author of this book strongly favoured the Eskimo, and was extremely denigrating towards the Indians of the region. 430 [DE MILLE, James] 1837-1880.
