American writer whose stories helped to establish the cowboy as an archetypical, individualist hero. Wister and his predecessor James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) created the basic Western myths and themes later popularised by such writers as Zane Grey and Max Brand. Before Wister, Theodore Roosevelt published his book The Winning of the West (1889-1896) to make clear the meaning of the land beyond the Mississippi to the whole country, and Mark Twain and Bret Harte wrote their stories about frontiersmen. Although Westerns are normally set in the 19th-century, they are not considered simple historical novels, but special kind of moral tales, in which the protagonist, usually male, must defend his personal values in a violent confrontation with socially destructive forces. "He was evidently howling the remarkable strain of yells that the cow-punchers invented as the speech best understood by cows - "Oi-ee, yah, whoop-yah-ye-ee, oooo-oop, oop, oop-oop-oop-oop-yah-hee!" But that gives you no idea of it. Alphabets are worse than photographs. It is not the lungs of every man that can produce these effects, not even from armies, eagles, or mules were such sounds ever heard on earth. The cowpuncher invented them. And when the last cow-puncher is laid to rest (if that, alas! have not already befallen) the yells will be forever gone."

Bookplate courtesy of the McCracken Research Library, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming. The lively and distinctive cowboy design featured on the 8.5-by-10-cm Irving H. "Larry" Larom (1889-1973) bookplate of the McCracken Research Library was adapted in 1992 from an old carved and painted wooden sign from the Valley Ranch near Cody, Wyoming. Quite literally nestled in the Rocky Mountains at the head of the South Fork of the Shoshone River in northwestern Wyoming, the Valley Ranch was a popular and influential dude ranch operated by Larry Larom. This design was chosen to recognize contributions from the Larom estate to the McCracken Research Library's acquisitions fund and is representative of the vitality of western images. [End Page 212] The McCracken Research Library is a museum library, part of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center (BBHC) in Cody, Wyoming. The historical center began as the Buffalo Bill Memorial Association with the purpose of honoring the history and spirit of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917). Now, eighty-six years later, the dream of a Buffalo Bill memorial has evolved into a major educational complex composed of the McCracken Research Library and five museums dedicated to the study of the American West: the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Plains Indian Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum, and the Draper Museum of Natural History. The McCracken Research Library,...

A Southern specialty with many recipe variations. A favorite wedding cake, this mountainous cake is a white cake topped with a boiled or "Seven Minute Frosting." What makes the cake so distinctive is the combination of chopped nuts and dried or candied fruits in its frosting. - Owen Wister (1860-1938), a popular novelist, picked Charleston, South Carolina, as the setting of his new romance novel. He modeled the central character, Lady Baltimore, after one of the city's former belles, Alicia Rhett Mayberry. In the novel, Lady Baltimore created a cake also called "Lady Baltimore." Wister's description of the cake sent readers of his novel scrambling to find the recipe, which had not been created yet. In his novel, Wister wrote: Photo from Aki's Kitchen website "I should like a slice, if you please, of Lady Baltimore," I said with extreme formality. I returned to the table and she brought me the cake, and I had my first felicitous meeting with Lady Baltimore. Oh, my goodness! Did you ever taste it? It's all soft, and it's in layers, and it has nuts - but I can't write any more about it; my mouth waters too much. Delighted surprise caused me once more to speak aloud, and with my mouth full, "But, dear me, this is delicious!"
