Is a forgotten wind, and the strong earth
Has laid aside its mantle to be bound
By the frost fetter. There is not a sound
Save of the skaiter's heel, and there is laid
An icy finger on the lip of streams,
And the clear icicle hangs cold and still,
And the snow-fall is noiseless as a thought.
Spring has a rushing sound, and Summer sends Many sweet voices with its odors out, And Autumn rustleth its decaying robe With a complaining whisper. Winter's dumb! God made his ministry a silent one, And He has given him a foot of steel And an unlovely aspect, and a breath Tempereth well, and hath a meaning hid Under the shadow of his hand. Look up! Hath a temptation now. There is no voice Of waters with beguiling for your ear, And the cool forest and the meadows green Witch not your feet away; and in the dells

Description
Sentiment and Celebrity tells the story of a man the New York Times once called "the most talked-about author in America." A widely admired, if controversial, master of the sentimental appeal, poet and "magazinist" Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867) was a pioneer in the modern business of celebrity. By charting the shape and thrust of the various controversies that surrounded Willis, this book shows how the cultural and commercial impulses that fostered the development of antebellum America's love affair with fame and fashion drew power and sustenance from the concurrent allure of genteel cultivation and sentiment.
Reviews
"Although chiefly known today for his ties to Fanny Fern and Harriet Jacobs, N. P. Willis is a fascinating figure in his own right, and this book goes a long way toward explaining his significance. Baker does a fine job of exploring Willis's career while making a solid contribution to our understanding of the culture of celebrity, fashion, and society in antebellum America."Michael Winship, University of Texas at Austin

Background note: Edwin Forrest is considered by many theatre historians as the first American-born actor of the first rank. Making his theatrical debut in Philadelphia at the age of 14, Forrest honed his skills in small theatres in New Orleans and the western states. The acclaim that accrued to him following his brilliant 1826 performance as Othello at the Park Theatre, New York City, launched him on a then unparalleled career of critical success and public renown. His occasionally jingoistic nationalism made him all the more popular with many fans. Forrest's fortunes took a turn during a visit to Britain in 1845, when he was hissed while playing MacBeth. Believing the British actor, Macready, responsible for his reception, Forrest began a vitriolic and very public feud that was often played out among the actors' fans and that was exacerbated by nationalist sentiments on both sides. On May 10, 1849, Macready was greeted in New York by a hostile crowd that soon devolved into a violent mob that was dispersed only by the militia. Though Forrest was not directly responsible, his reputation suffered, and he fell further in the eyes of his public due to a protracted and, once again, very public divorce, lasting from 1851 to 1869. After 1865, Forrest became increasingly debilitated by sciatica, and seldom appeared on stage.
Scope and contents: The Forrest Papers consists of 93 letters from Forrest to his friend and financial adviser, James Lawson, and 25 letters in reply. There are also 33 letters from Mrs. Forrest (Catherine Norton Sinclair Forrest), and some miscellaneous items, most importantly his bankbook and a copy of the act to incorporate the Edwin Forrest Home.

Biographical Sketch
Edgar Poe was born in Boston, January 19, 1809, the second child of Eliza Arnold Poe, a well-known actress, and David Poe, Jr., also an actor. Early in 1810 David Poe abandoned his family; nothing is known of his fate. Later that same year Eliza gave birth to her third child, Rosalie. By the summer of 1811 Eliza's health was failing and she died on December 8, 1811, in Richmond, Virginia, at the age of 24. The eldest son went to live with the Poe family in Baltimore, the infant daughter went to a Richmond family named MacKenzie, and Edgar was taken in by John and Frances (Fannie) Allan.

Nathaniel Parker Willis
Magazine editor, journalist, and talented essayist, Nathaniel Parker Willis brought a rare, modern sensibility to his reports on contemporary life. From 1829, when he founded the New York Mirror, until his death in 1867, Willis worked continually as an editor and journalist. Flamboyant, vain, and ambitious, he was a controversial figure in New York society, scorned by lawyer George Templeton Strong and hated by his own sister, Sarah Willis Parton, the best-selling author known as Fanny Fern. But Walt Whitman called Willis a "good natured bright fellow," while remembering his vanity, which made him "the horror of photographers." Willis wrote often about Brady's New York gallery for his Home Journal. He posed for this Imperial photograph in New York in the late 1850s. Mathew Brady Studio
