Caught, tried, and convicted, Garrett was finally executed in 1991 after exhausting his legal appeals process. Genghis, Khan of the Mongols (1155?-1227) "Let not my end disarm you, and on no account weep or keen for me, let the enemy be warned of my death" Genghis Khan was the founder of the largest continuous land empire to ever be established, ranging from the Near East to the Yellow Sea. In 1226, at a relatively advance age, he lead his army on a campaign to punish the Tanguts for their refusal to provide him with auxiliary troops during a previous campaign. He fell ill as his forces approached the Tangut capital of Ningxia, perhapsalthough accounts disagreefrom infections of wounds inflicted on his genitals by a captured woman he had ravished. At any event, when it became clear that he was dying, he summoned his generals and sons to his bedside. His sons arrived first and found their father deliriously raving that "My descendants will wear gold, they will eat the choicest meats, they will ride the finest horses, they will hold in their arms the most beautiful women, and they will forget to whom they owe it all." Eventually, he regained his composure and told his sons "It is clear to me that I must leave everything and go hence from thee." He then turned to his generals and began to give final guidance for the battle against the Tanguts. Before he concluded his speech, the instructed them "the words of the lad Kublai are well worth attention; see, all of you, that you heed what he says! One day he will sit in my seat and bring you good fortune such as you have had in my day." Following the khan's death, the Mongol army defeated the Tanguts, sacked Ningxia, and massacred all of its inhabitants.

GREAT RECIPES FROM GREAT BOOKS
O. Henry's short stories celebrate simple dishes
Story and illustration by STUART KELLOGG/Staff Writer The stories by O. Henry, pseudonym of William Sidney Porter (1862-1910), so often end with a twist that people now speak of an "O. Henry ending." Falsely accused of embezzling from the First National Bank of Austin, Texas, O. Henry began to write while serving time at the federal penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio. He set his stories in Texas; Honduras, where he fled when first charged with embezzlement; and, most notably, New York City. His was the New York of the working poor: the Four Million, not Mrs. Astor's Four Hundred. For example, in "The Gift of the Magi," which must be O. Henry's most famous story, Jim and Della can afford only pork chops for their Christmas Eve dinner.

Henry, O. (pen name of Porter, William Sidney) (1862-1910) Successful American short story writer and master of the surprise ending. Born in North Carolina, he moved to Texas where he was accused of embezzling funds from a bank. He escaped to Central America but, upon his return, he served three years in the Columbus, Ohio federal penitentiary where he worked in the prison pharmacy. He later moved to New York City (which he referred to as "Baghdad on the Hudson"), where many of his stories take place. The Gift of the Magi (1905) A tender Christmas story of unselfish love, "The Gift of the Magi" relates the tale of an impoverished young married woman, Della Young, who sells her beautiful, knee-length hair to a woman named Madame Sofronie in exchange for twenty dollars which she uses to buy her husband, Jim, a holiday gift of a platinum watch fob. The story's unexpected and charming ending have made it a perennial Christmas favorite.
