    Biography of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 to William Wilde and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde, prominent intellectuals in Dublin, Ireland. Though not of the aristocracy, the Wildes were nonetheless well off and sent Oscar to the finest schools as he grew up. Oscar seems especially influenced by his mother, a brilliantly witty raconteur, and he was frequently invited while still a child to participate in their intellectual circle of friends. Wilde entered Trinity College Dublin in 1871 and enjoyed an accomplished career, garnering awards and studying the classics as well as theories of aestheticism. In 1874, he transferred to Oxford in England and studied under the divergent tutorials of John Ruskin (a Renaissance man of many scholarly talents) and Walter Pater (an influential proponent of the new school of aestheticism). Wilde negotiated their conflicting philosophies while he experimented with flashy clothing and discovered his homosexual tendencies. Upon graduating from Oxford, Wilde had a brief flirtation with Catholicism, even meeting with the Pope, but his independent ideas prevented his exclusive attachment to religion. In 1881, he published his first volume of verse (Poems), and was a well-known enough entity to be satirized by a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera. He moved to the avant-garde neighborhood of Chelsea in London, but his father's death and the family's snowballing debts forced him to embark on a lecture tour of the United States in 1882. Upon arriving at customs, Wilde boldly made his now-famous statement: "I have nothing to declare except my genius." On tour, he dressed up as a dandy and advocated the philosophy of the Aesthetic, the idea that art should exist solely for art's sake?or, as he wrote elsewhere, it should be "useless." While on tour, Wilde also produced his first, unsuccessful play in New York, Vera.

    Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900
    Biography
(from: WWW Cemetery @ http://www.io.org/cemetery/Overview.html) Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 and grew up in an intellectually bustling Irish household. His mother was a poet who wrote under the pen name Speranza and who had a considerable following; his father was a renowned physician with an interest in myths and folklore.
At Oxford he won a coveted poetry award and came under the influence of the late nineteenth century aesthetic movement. He found its notions of "art for art's sake" and dedicating one's life to art suitable to his temperment and talents. Oscar had a desire to make himself famous and set off to London to do just that.
From 1878 to 1881 Oscar Wilde became well known for being well known despite having any substantial acheivements to build on. He insinuated himself into the class of people he labelled as "the beautiful people", wore outrageous clothes, passed himself off as an art critic and aesthete, and built a reputation for saying shocking things and doing amusing ones. If one tells the truth, one is sure sooner or later to be found out. His natural wit and good humour endeared him to the art and theater world and through his lover Frank Miles he found easy entry into the cliques that frequented London's theater circuit and drawing rooms.
He became a much-desired all-purpose party guest and, with his velvet coat, knee breeches, silk stockings, pale green tie, cane, shoulder-length hair, loose silk shirts and the lily he occasionally carried through Picadilly Circus, much talked about and satirized. His popularity and flamboyance led to his being choosen as an advance publicity man for a new Gilbert and Sullivan operetta

AUTHOR Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born at 21 Westland Row, Dublin, on 16 October 1854. His father was an eminent eye and ear specialist; his mother wrote under the pen-name 'Speranza'. They soon moved to 1 Merrion Square, where Oscar was allowed to frequent his mother's salon. Wilde defeated Edward Carson for the foundation scholarship in classics at Trinity College, Dublin, and in 1874 won a scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was influenced by John Ruskin, Walter Pater and Cardinal Newman. He became a disciple of aestheticism, pursuing beauty for beauty's sake; his poem Ravenna (1878) won the Newdigate Prize. Wilde's wit and eccentric dress attracted attention, and in 1882 he undertook a lecture tour in America, advising a customs officer that he had 'nothing to declare but my genius'. In 1884, he married Constance Lloyd, a barrister's daughter, and embarked on a literary career. His first success was The Happy Prince (1888), but his novel

Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900 Oscar Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born and grew up in Dublin. He was the son of a surgeon, Sir William Wilde and the writer Jane Francesca Elgee. From his school days and certainly at Oxford University, the beginnings of his fanatical aestheticism could be found in his extravagant dress sense and consummate style. Until his first expression of homosexual feelings in 1886, Oscar Wilde's works were shallow or derivative. However, his sexual revelation seemed to be a turning point: his productivity increased, and the quality improved. The guilt he felt about his homosexuality and his treatment of his wife, Constance (who he had married in 1884), and their two children, could be seen to have completed his ability to write on the themes of evil, crime and suffering. He wrote The Importance of Being Earnest (his last play) in 1886. By 1890, Wilde seemed to have come to the conclusion that the 'evil' in himself could not be controlled, and so explored the theme not within the safe confines of a fairytale, but in a dark, sinister novel with a tragic ending: The Picture of Dorian Gray Wilde was imprisoned for homosexual acts in 1895 and went bankrupt before he left the prison. Wilde died in 1900 but his name is still synonymous with the bohemian lifestyle, wit and comic theatre.
