Dreiser, Theodore
(1871-1945). American journalist and author, Dreiser's writings are notable for their stark realism. Sister Carrie (1900), the tale of a "fallen woman's" rise, has been called the first 20th century novel in its rejection of Victorian morality.
Signed Photograph (" T.D. Hollywood / January / 1942 ". Inscribed in black ink: " To lovely Helen with love and admiration from T.D." The print has faded somewhat at the bottom edges, but the writing remains strong; scattered minor, incidental creasing. Fine condition.
A smiling Dreiser three years before his death and two years before his marriage to Helen Richardson, his love of over 25 years. Through Dreiser's marriage to another woman, stormy arguments, various separations and assorted romantic entanglements, the two remained together. Dreiser's relationship with Richardson brings up an intriguing question for us was this photo, inscribed: " To lovely Helen ", destined for Helen Richardson? .

United States An American Poetry Project for Low Intermediate ESL Adults
by Kristin Lems
In my position teaching at a large urban university in Chicago, I work with adult immigrants between 18 and 65 years of age. As working adults, they have a pragmatic attitude toward their studies. There are few if any motivation problems, and they do nearly any amount of homework I assign. Upon completion of their ESL classes, some of them leave the university and others continue with university studies. Of those who stay in the university, most study business or computers. After advising some students who were exiting our program about their future courses, I realized that many of them would go immediately into their specialization coursework, perhaps taking only one required composition course, and thus never encountering any literature in their studies. Colleges in the United States assume students beginning undergraduate studies have had exposure to American literature in secondary school, but this is not the case with immigrant students. As a result, I decided to create an opportunity for my students to encounter English language literature before they finished their English classes. To do this, I put together a poetry unit, featuring one American poem each week. I invited a colleague teaching at the same level to do the unit on poems in tandem with me during our ten-week quarter. The purpose of this article is to present some preliminary results of the poetry unit after teaching it for two quarters.

This is the way to Mars
Harry Cat and I would rather have been almost anywhere else than sitting in the vet's waiting room waiting for annual jabs. It's not supposed to be like that. I always book the first appointment of the day, whisk him in quick and get the job done as fast as may be so that he's home before he realises what's happening. But this morning they had an emergency a little old White Highland Terrier who'd been taken very poorly overnight so we had to wait. I tried to explain to Harry but he was determined to make the most of it and huddled in a corner of the carrier, doing his very best to look terrified and miserable. I felt really bad about it. Anyway, our turn came up soon enough and for once Harry, all chastened and meek, was no problem at all when he got on the table, submitting to being felt all over, having his teeth scraped and, finally, the jab itself. He's as fit as a fiddle of course, lean and strong, just like a good Welsh farm cat should be. Only twelve years old, and going strong. When we got home he went on with his endeavours to make us feel badly for him, meeping and mewing, and walking from one of us to the other by turns, as if to say "I've had a tough morning and I deserve a treat!" He got one, too, from me. And then another one, from Graham. Time we realised what the little blighter was up to he was smiling happily and looking distinctly swollen around the tummy region.

Archives of Loving Poetry
Daily romantic verse gives us a reminder of our loving natures which we too often forget in our daily internet activities. Take a few deep breaths, relax and enjoy this sample romantic poem from these romantic verse archives. From the Archives: The meadow and the mountain with desire
...Gazed on each other, till a fierce unrest
...Surged 'neath the meadow's seemingly calm breast,
And all the mountain's fissures ran with fire. A mighty river rolled between them there.
...What could the mountain do but gaze and burn?
...What could the meadow do but look and yearn,
And gem its bosom to conceal despair? Their seething passion agitated space,
...Till lo! the lands a sudden earthquake shook,
...The river fled: the meadow leaped, and took
The leaning mountain in a close embrace. Attraction by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) Romance poetry is many things to many people- sometimes verse romantic is difficult because it reminds us of relationships we do not have; sometimes such verse is inspirational and leads us to more loving in our lives, sometimes such rhyming is just plain fun- so enjoy these verse romance archives! 24HR Free Psychic Readings - Zelda sees all, knows all.

She Wields a Pen: American Women Poets of the Nineteenth Century Feminist Bookstore News
U.S. 1
She Wields a Pen
does more to reveal the multiple lives, concerns, and social complexities of nineteenth-century women than do the 3,000 page anthologies from the larger publishing houses....[Gray] places the poems of Hawaiian Queen Lili'uokalani next to Emily Dickinson, Owl Women next to Emma Lazarus, Ann Plato next to Louisa May Alcott. Poets never mentioned in The Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States appear in Gray's anthology. Authors who never made it to the more compendious and infinitely impressive Norton Anthology of African American Literature She Wields a Pen Transformations Nineteenth-century America was a nation in the making, with poetry playing its part by singing the new republic in its every facet and mood. Written and read by millions, poetry poured off the presses. No rarefied art form but a vast and varied industry, poetry provided a profession for many women barred from the more traditional masculine occupations. These women have largely been lost to literature, even though they include some the America's greatest and most rewarding poets. With the revealing exception of Emily Dickinson, a modern academic canon based on ideals of masculinity and on a modernist view of heroic individualism has dispensed with their work.

Transcribed from the 1919 Gay and Hancock edition by David Price, email ccx074@coventry.ac.uk HELLO, BOYS! FORWARD The greater part of these verses dealing with the war were written in France during my recent seven months' sojourn there, and for the purpose of using in entertainments given in camps and hospitals to thousands of American soldiers. They were the result of coming into close contact with the soldiers' mind and heart, and were intentionally expressed in the simplest manner, without any consideration of methods approved by modern critics. The fact that I have been asked to autograph scores of copies of many of these verses (and one of them to the extent of 350 copies) is more gratifying to me than would be the highest encomiums of the purely literary critic. Ella Wheeler Wilcox London, October 1918. THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving for the strong armed day, That lifted war's red curse, When Peace, that lordly little word, Was uttered in a voice that stirred - Yea, shook the Universe.

Hymns: Prayers: Eternal Father, Strong to Save . . . This hymn is known today as the Navy Hymn since it is present practice (and has been since 1879) to conclude each Sunday's Divine Services at the United States Naval Academy with the singing of the first verse of this hymn. The hymn is a musical benediction that long has had a special appeal to seafaring men, particularly in the American Navy and the Royal Navies of the British Commonwealth and which, in more recent years, has become a part of French naval tradition. The words to this hymn were written as a poem in 1860 by William Whiting of Winchester, England for a student who was about to sail for the United States. The melody, published in 1861, was composed by fellow englishman, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes
