The Wisconsin years of Ella Wheeler Wilcox have been called the Midwest's Golden Age of Literature. Transplanted New England cultural roots gave Wisconsin a literary flowering. Ella Wheeler Wilcox was one of the brightest blooms. It has also been said that her life was an autobiography of American history as her writings parallel social and economic changes of the Victorian Era.
Ella Wheeler's parents, Marcus and Sarah Pratt Wheeler, came from Thetford, Vermont, in June, 1849, with their three children. Ella was not born until over a year later. The Wheelers rented a house on the present County A at Scharine Corner east of Janesville. Then it was the busy Mineral Point-Milwaukee Road. The Wheelers were intellectuals who craved reading material. Arthur Braley, their landlord and a Shakespearean scholar, shared his library with them. Before Ella's birth, Mrs. Wheeler announced that her unborn child would be a daughter, an author, and would travel and live as she, her mother, had always wanted. The Wheeler family was not suited to pioneer life. The winter of 1850, Marcus taught dancing and "manners" at an Inn a half mile west on the Milwaukee Road. he played the violin for the dances. Aunt Abby Pratt of Johnstown had for many years subscribed to the New York Mercury for the Wheeler family. When Ella was fourteen, Aunt Abby failed to renew the subscription. This was a near tragedy as Ella had written two essays for the magazine. The essays were published. Ella obtained all the back copies of the

Solitude Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone. For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth, But has trouble enough of it's own. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air. The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go. They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all. There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink life's gall. Feast, and your halls are crowded. Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a long and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain. Friendship After Love After the fierce midsummer all ablaze Has burned itself to ashes, and expires In the intensity of its own fires, There come the mellow, mild, St. Martin days Crowned with the calm of peace, but sad with haze. So after Love has led us, till he tires Of his own throes, and torments, and desires, Comes large-eyed friendship: with a restful gaze, He beckons us to follow, and across Cool verdant vales we wander free from care. Is it a touch of frost lies in the air? Why are we haunted with a sense of loss? We do not wish the pain back, or the heat; And yet, and yet, these days are incomplete.

A BURIAL by: Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919)
ODAY I had a burial of my dead.
There was no shroud, no coffin, and no pall,
No prayers were uttered and no tears were shed
I only turned a picture to the wall.
A picture that had hung within my room
For years and years; a relic of my youth.
It kept the rose of love in constant bloom
To see those eyes of earnestness and truth.
At hours wherein no other dared intrude,
I had drawn comfort from its smiling grace.
    Silent companion of my solitude,
My soul held sweet communion with that face.
I lived again the dream so bright, so brief,
    Though wakened as we all are by some Fate;
This picture gave me infinite relief,
And did not leave me wholly desolate.
To-day I saw an item, quite by chance,
That robbed me of my pitiful poor dole:
A marriage notice fell beneath my glance,
And I became a lonely widowed soul.
With drooping eyes, and cheeks a burning flame,
I turned the picture to the blank wall's gloom.
My very heart had died in me of shame,
If I had left it smiling in my room.
Another woman's husband. So, my friend

THE DEPTHS by: Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919)
OT only sun-kissed heights are fair. Below
The cold, dark billows of the frowning deep
Do lovely blossoms of the ocean sleep,
Rocked gently by the waters to and fro.
The coral beds with magic colors glow,
    And priceless pearl-encrusted mollusks heap
The glittering rocks where shining atoms leap
    Like living broken rainbows.
    Even so
We find the sea of sorrow. Black as night
The sullen surface meets our frightened gaze.
As down we sink to darkness and despair.
But at the depths! such beauty, such delight!
Such flowers as never grew in pleasure's ways.
Ah! not alone are sun-kissed summits fair.

for everyone Category: Desserts
Ingredients:
Love's favourite pastime is the progressive kiss.
When a man woos a woman
he usually begins demonstrations
by kissing her gloved hands
- an innocent enough act surely.
But it does not long satisfy him.
The glove is in the way, and he longs to press his lips to her soft flesh - the white fingers first - then the pink palm, and the blue veined wrist. She blushes a little at this and draws her hand away, yet, surely, it is not very wrong, she thinks. Directions: After that he begs to kiss her cheek - just one little touch of lips to its velvet surface - no more. Such a tiny favor to, ask? And if one cheek is caressed, why not the other? It is unfair to show favoritism. Crossing from the left cheek to the right, leads directly over love's domain - the lips, the home of kisses. Prev: Love, Misunderstood. Rare with blossoms and perfume sweet,
Cometh the round world's royal noon time,
The red midsummer of blazing heat,
When the sun, like an eye that never closes,
Bends on the earth its fervid gaze,
And the winds are still, and the crimson roses
Droop and wither and die in its rays. Unto my heart has come this season,
O, my lady, my worshiped one,
When, over the stars of Pride and Reason, Sails Love's cloudless, noonday sun. Like a great red ball in my bosom burning With fires that nothing can quench or tame, It glows till my heart itself seems turning Into a liquid lake of flame. The hopes half shy and the sighs all tender, The dreams and fears of an earlier day

Ella Wheeler Wilcox was born November 5, 1850, in the village of Johnston, Rock County, Wisconsin. Her parents were Marcus H. Wheeler and Sarah Pratt Wheeler. They had three older children all born in Vermont. In the spring of 1852 the Wheeler family settled in Dane County in the town of Westport, where Ella grew up, and where she made her reputation as a writer of poetry. She was educated at the district school, now named in her honor. She later attended the Wisconsin University for one term. While growing up she enjoyed horseback riding, dancing, visiting and dreaming. She was first published at 14. When she was 22 years old her volume entitled “shells” containing 119 poems was published and she had more than 175 poems published. In 1884 she married Robert Wilcox and moved to Connecticut. After her marriage she continued to write not only poetry but did a great deal of prose writing as well. A number of her essays are specifically on New Thought themes and she was strongly drawn to Spiritualism and Indian thought.
