Joseph Heastie, Teresa Klaassen, and Stuart Malawer. On April 12, 2000, the George Mason University Alumni Association hosted its annual Celebration of Distinction awards dinner to recognize and honor several alumni, students, faculty, and staff for their outstanding achievements. The Alumnus of the Year Award was presented to Teresa M. Klaassen, B.S. Business Administration '77, for exceptional success that brings honor to George Mason University. Executive vice president and a director of Sunrise Assisted Living Communities, a company she founded with her husband in 1981, Klaassen has dedicated her career to reforming the institution of assisted living. Klaassen also serves as a trustee on the George Mason University Foundation Board. Juan Pacheco (second from right) and his family greet John P. Wood after the awards ceremony. Joseph A. Heastie, M.P.A. '84, received the Alumni Service Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the university. Heastie has served as Rector of the Board of Visitors (1993-94), founding chairman of the Minority Advisory Board (1994-97), and president of the Alumni Association (1997-98). Heastie's dedicated record of service has set a standard of particular distinction and brought honor to the Alumni Association.

Academics still write and publish articles and books on Joyce's last novel; conferences and symposia continue to devote time and energy on it. Every successive academic generation, every fashion and fad in criticism and theory, has found new ways of dealing with the enigma of the work. Although Finnegans Wake will probably never be such a happy hunting ground as Ulysses , it seems safe to assume that as far as academia is concerned, the book is still a growth industry. Fifteen years ago, the facsimiles of the Finnegans Wake notebooks and all the manuscript material for the Wake were published. It is indicative of past blindness and current prejudice that not more of the academic Wake critics have taken note. The complete lack of interest in the way Joyce's works were written should not come as a surprise to observers of the academic Joycean scene. How else can one explain the fact that the famous "word known to all men"-passage could have come as a revelation to scholars of

It is too bad I can't get frequent driver miles. The Honors Nights give me the opportunity to drive between 8,500 and 10,000 miles in eight weeks. The driving and being away from home is all worth it: 6,700 students and their families joined us for the awards. The Fifth Iowa Volunteer Infantry website is pleased to provide a comprehensive listing of the members of the regiment, transcribed from the official Roster of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion . Although the Roster includes muster dates, military promotions and various other details, only the names are reproduced below. It should also be noted that there was significant variety in the spelling of some names during this period of time. In cases where more than one regimental member shared the same name, a middle initial has been used to distinguish between them. If this is not available, or further distinction is necessary, the state or nation of birth is cited. It should also be noted that not all of the men listed in the roster actually "served." Several of the soldiers were "unassigned" (to any company) and several entries bear the cryptic remark after their muster date: "no further record." If you discover any errors below, please contact the Fifth Iowa Infantry

President's Corner
I hope each of you is considering who you want for officers this next year. We need a president, vice president, treasurer, radio officer, and at least two board members. Our banquet this year is on Friday night January 14 and the PAARA club will join us in this event. It should be a very good time so make your plans to attend and then let us know if you are. It may interest some of you to know that PAARA members were very helpful in starting EMARC/FARS with many of their members participating in both clubs. I want to encourage all of you who live in the Los Altos, Palo Alto, Mt.View, and Sunnyvale To participate in the SPECS Emergency drill and be prepared to help them. They are doing a good job for the community and need your support. Jack WA6YJR

I am also very pleased to see the quality of the next Executive of our Society, the next President, Kerry Rowe, and his two Vice-Presidents, Bachir Touileb and Richard Bathurst. The fact that persons with such a reputation and so active at the national and international levels accept to serve tells of the importance and the vitality of our Society.
e Conférence canadienne de géotechnique.
The quality and the number of papers, as well as the large attendance and the energetic social activities at our ongoing series of annual Canadian Geotechnical Conferences, as was very evident in Montreal this Fall, testify to the vitality of the geo-professional discipline in Canada. The CGS technical activities organized in the regions, almost monthly in most large Canadian cities, are probably our greatest pride. The role of our Divisions is becoming more and more important by allowing CGS to attract members with a broad range of interests and by contributing to the international recognition of Canadian geo-professionals. Our Divisions are indeed generally very active in the international associations in their discipline.
The Canadian Geotechnical Journal continues to be one of the leading international journal in its field and starting next January will be available on the Internet, free of charge to all Canadians. Our way of communicating with our members is also changing. In addition to all the information about our Society, CGS News is, since last March, available on our Website.

http://www.bfchistory.org/soc9'2002.htm
The Historical Society of The Bible Fellowship Church September, 2002
These lists evoke the memory of Charles Henry Brunner, secretary extraordinaire. For 40+ years he was the secretary of Annual Conference and editor in charge of publishing the Yearbooks which first appeared in 1896. He was apparently a man who enjoyed lists and keeping statistics. The 1896 Yearbook contains a list of all the annual and semi-annual conferences which had been held including date, location, chairman and secretary at each one. He later added a list of general conferences with year and place with the names of the Pennsylvania delegates.
In 1908, he added a new list entitled, Record of Appointments. He listed each church and the pastor who had served in each church. He began the record with 1874. A glance at the minutes in Verhandlungen gives the explanation for beginning that year. Prior to that, pastoral appointments were not recorded. From that time on, the Annual Conference recorded the assignments of pastors and so a list was easy to maintain. Other lists would be added. In 1917, he began a list of camp meetings including year, number of tents and locations. Some of the meetings would probably be unknown if it were not for his list.
The task of updating the list fell next to Willard Cassel. I am now into the area of my own recollections which may add an additional error factor. However, if my recollections are faulty, someone who reads this with better recollections will lovingly and gently correct my error (and I will be glad for it). Willard gathered all the data from 1953 to 1976 and included it in the Faith and Order published that year. He did a further update bringing the list up to the year 1993. That is the last bit of listing that has occurred and now the list is only 8 years out of date which is not so bad.
