Next HE GAVE ...TEACHERS Who REALLY is the 'Faithful and Discreet Slave'? Second Edition By David Aspinall A Testimony about the Need for Teachers:
BEFORE the first serious cracks began to show in my faith in the Watchtower, God had already set me up for a soft fall. I was reading books I shouldn't have. Since all Jehovah's Witnesses officially believe that the only good food comes from the organization's table, I should never have started collecting non-JW books. But my years as a pioneer and trouble shooter (someone publishers take along on difficult calls) had taught me that the weapons the Watchtower supplies were inadequate. Books like Is the Bible the Word of God? and Aid to Bible Understanding, while impressive to theuneducated JW and Joe Public, didn't make much of a dent in the armour of half-educated unbelievers. Rather than dismiss such 'difficult' calls as goats,
One thing that became apparent fairly early in my book collecting: most of the best books I found defending the Bible were written by clergymen! This became especially important later on, when I had to look more closely at the original books of C.T Russell and Joseph Rutherford. Since the Watchtower no longer published any of these books by its founders, they made quite the trophy on my bookshelves, never failing to impress fellow Witnesses who visited. Of course, neither they nor I would likely ever read them anyway why read 'old light' when we had so much fine literature with up-to-date 'spiritual food'? Nevertheless, though my faith in the organization was as yet

Prayer—Fervent, Persistent, Expectant Daniel Shanks It is certainly not without personal conviction this article is penned; for if ever there was one pointed out and disqualified from writing a piece on “prayer” — my name would surely surface. There are plenty of regrets in my life concerning a neglect of this holy ordinance. How many of our heads must hang with shame as we reflect upon past years of sinfully shirking our responsibilities in this most blessed means of grace? Definite prayer, though, is a must. It is a must if we would have our labours attended upon by the Spirit of God. It is a must if we would walk and commune with the living God. It is a must in daily deliverance from indwelling sin, from the enticements of the world, and the assaults of our adversary — “Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation” (Mark 14:38). Prayerlessness in the life will surely give rise to spiritual defeat and decline in the soul. Any attempt to justify its neglect is vain and foolish: “I don't know how to pray; I don't have time; my work is so demanding; my body is constantly in pain; God is a sovereign God, etc.” Many excuses fill our mouths for avoiding the throne of grace; yet even the best is nonetheless worthless. They're all lies. Honesty demands a true confession; and when you `shell down the corn,' what do we find? — pride lurking, deep-seated unbelief, and a cold heart of indifference. (Again, personal experience is the qualification claimed for setting such forth.) These are the real culprits; aren't they?

Job's Fifth Friend:
An Ethical Critique of the Book of Job
Paper read at the Society of Biblical Literature International Meeting, Helsinki and Lahti, Finland, August 1999. This paper is unpublished, and should not be cited without the author's permission. First posted on the Web 30 May 2000.
There is one friend missing from the book of Job, and I am undertaking, even so unseasonably late, to fill that role. It is a friend who makes a critique, not of the character Job/ 1/ but of the book of Job, a fifth friend who calls into question not the ethical integrity of the man Job, as the first four did, but the ethical integrity of the book about Job./ 2/
Myself, I love the book of Job with all my heart-though it would name me for my speech a false friend and a 'torturer-comforter',/ 3/ as Job his friends (16.2)-and I call it into question only on behalf of itself, so that its angularity and its cunning should be the better taken the measure of and so that it should not lie forever in the hands of timid and sugary theologians. I say its angularity because of its awkwardness in knowing its own mind and telling it, and its cunning because of its singular capacity to persuade its readers of its innocence in the face of its dubious ethics.
Here are four sites of ethical difficulty in the book of Job:
1. The rationale for the imposition of Job's suffering.

    First Presbyterian Church Augusta, Georgia
Romans 15:23-33 The outward and upward movement of the gospel Dr. Raymond C. Ortlund, Jr. 28 January 2001 When God poured out the Holy Spirit in the days of the early church, he unleashed into this world a transforming power. And the newness he created did not just remake the isolated individual here and there; it created a new community bursting with energy, conviction and purpose. The world had never seen anything like it. And God is at work in the same way among us today. The book of Romans teaches the doctrines of that transforming power (1:1-11:36) and opens up the application of that power (12:1-15:13).

    http://www.cprf.co.uk/quotes/glorysufficiencypsalms.htm
Athanasius (c.296-373) bishop of Alexandria, champion of orthodoxy against Arianism:
    (1) “I believe that a man can find nothing more glorious than these Psalms; for they embrace the whole life of man, the affections of his mind, and the motions of his soul. To praise and glorify God, he can select a psalm suited to every occasion, and thus will find that they were written for him.”
    (2) Athanasius referred to the Psalms as the “epitome of the whole Scriptures.”
    (3) “They appear to me a mirror of the soul of every one who sings them; they enable him to perceive his own emotions, and to express them in the words of the Psalms. He who hears them read receives them as if they were spoken for him. Conscience-struck, he will either humbly repent, or hearing how the trust of believers was rewarded by God, rejoice as if His mercy were promised to him in particular, and begin to thank God. Yet, in its pages you find portrayed man’s whole life, the emotion of his soul, and the frames of his mind. We cannot conceive of anything richer than the Book of Psalms. If you need penitence, if anguish or temptation have befallen you, if you have escaped persecution and oppression, or are immersed in deep affliction, concerning each and all you may find instruction, and state it to God in the words of the Psalter!”
Basil the Great (c.330-379) bishop of Caesarea, author of a famous work on the Holy Spirit: “The Book of Psalms is a compend of all divinity; a common store of medicine for the soul; a universal magazine of good doctrines profitable to everyone in all conditions.”

    Rev. Alexander Whyte
Free Church leader. Born out-of-wedlock in Kirriemuir, Whyte's mother struggled to bring him up. He became an apprentice shoemaker and was self-educated, fitting his studies between work. In 1854, he was lucky to obtain a position as school-master in Padanaram and the following year moved to another teaching position in Airlie. Here the Minister encouraged Whyte, teaching him Latin and Greek enabling him to enter King's College (Aberdeen) in 1858. While in Aberdeen, he was asked to serve as temporary minister in Woodside Congregational Church. He went on to study divinity at New College (Edinburgh) under Prof. Robert Rainy (1826 - 1906). He preached at Free St. John's in Glasgow for three years, before returning to Edinburgh to serve as junior minister at Free St. George's under Rev. Dr. Robert Candlish (1806-73). From 1909, Whyte served as Principal of New College. He retired to Buckinghamshire, where he died, but was buried in Edinburgh. Whyte is remembered as a powerful preacher.
