New York Anti-Slavery Office The large woodcut image of a slave in chains was originally adopted as the seal of the Society for the Abolition of Slavery in England in the 1780s and appeared on medallions made by Josiah Wedgwood as early as 1787. A popular image, it often appeared in anti-slavery publications. On this broadside of 1837, the image is coupled with "Our Countrymen in Chains," a famous poem by Quaker author John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892). Among his many anti-slavery publications was an entire volume, Poems Written During the Progress of the Abolition Cause in the United States (1837). In 1833 Whittier acted as secretary of the Anti-Slavery Convention at Philadelphia and was one of the committee that drafted its declaration of principles.

John Greenleaf Whittier was born on a farm near Haverhill, Mass., on Dec. 17, 1807, of poor Quaker parents. His formal education was meager. At the age of 14 he discovered Robert Burns's poetry, with its Scottish dialect and humble, rural subjects. He began writing poems; one caught the eye of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, who published it in 1826 in his paper, the Newburyport Free Press . Garrison encouraged him to continue his schooling, and Whittier attended Haverhill Academy on and off for two years. For a time he also taught school. Meanwhile, his poems were being published in local newspapers.

The young poet's earliest work attracted the attention of the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, editor of the Free Press newspaper in Newburyport, Massachusetts, who asked him to contribute articles. John Greenleaf Whittier
    John Greenleaf Whittier is buried in the Union Cemetery, Amesbury, Massachusetts, USA. (See map...ref no. 18) Whittier was born near Haverhill in Massachusetts - the son of Quaker parents. During his teens he began to write poetry - inspired by the work of Robert Burns . His first two collections Legends of New England in Prose and Verse (1831) and Moll Pitcher (1932) dealt with pre-industrial village life and were well received by the public. However, Whittier was also a fierce anti-slavery campaigner. In 1833 he wrote an abolitionist pamphlet entitled: Justice and Expediency and later published a collection entitled Voices of Freedom containing a number of poems. In 1842 he ran for Congress and was a founder member of the Republican Party. Grave of John Greenleaf Whittier Photo © Gravematter.com Although a contemporary of Walt Whitman , Whittier did not experiment with free verse but continued to write using conventional rhyme and meter patterns. After the Civil War, Whittier turned away from politics to concentrate on poetry. His output was prolific - managing a collection every two years or so. Much of his poetry evoked his idyllic rural childhood - e.g.

    FLOWERS IN WINTER by: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
      OW strange to greet, this frosty morn,
      In graceful counterfeit of flower,
      These children of the meadows, born
      Of sunshine and of showers!
      How well the conscious wood retains
      The pictures of its flower-sown home,
      The lights and shades, the purple stains,
      And golden hues of bloom!
      It was a happy thought to bring
      To the dark season's frost and rime
      This painted memory of spring,
      This dream of summertime.
      Our hearts are lighter for its sake,
      Our fancy's age renews its youth,
      And dim-remembered fictions take
      The guise of present truth.
      A wizard of the Merrimac,
      So old ancestral legends say,
      Could call green leaf and blossom back
      To frosted stem and spray.
      The dry logs of the cottage wall,
      Beneath his touch, put out their leaves;
      The clay-bound swallow, at his call

    by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) Before my drift-wood fire I sit,
    And see, with every waif I burn,
    Old dreams and fancies coloring it,
    And folly's unlaid ghosts return. O ships of mine, whose swift keels cleft
    The enchanted sea on which they sailed,
    Are these poor fragments only left
    Of vain desires and hopes that failed? Did I not watch from them the light
    Of sunset on my towers in Spain,
    And see, far off, uploom in sight
    The Fortunate Isles I might not gain? Did sudden lift of fog reveal
    Arcadia's vales of song and spring, And did I pass, with grazing keel, The rocks whereon the sirens sing? Have I not drifted hard upon The unmapped regions lost to man, The cloud-pitched tents of Prester John, The palace domes of Kubla Khan? Did land winds blow from jasmine flowers, Where Youth the ageless Fountain fills? Did Love make sign from rose blown bowers, And gold from Eldorado's hills? Alas! the gallant ships, that sailed On blind Adventure's errand sent

    The Henchman
    MY lady walks her morning round,
    And all the birds make songs for her. Her thrushes sing in Rathburn bowers,
    And Rathburn side is gay with flowers;
    Was beauty seen or music heard.
    The hound and I are on her trail,
    The wind and I uplift her veil;
    As if the calm, cold moon she were,
    And I the tide, I follow her. As unrebuked as they, I share
    The licence of the sun and air,
    And in a common homage hide
    My worship from her scorn and pride. No lance have I, in joust or fight, But, at her feet, how blest were I For any need of hers to die! Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter
