Print Preview of Section Whitman, Walt (1819-1892), American poet, whose work boldly asserts the worth of the individual and the oneness of all humanity. Whitman’s defiant break with traditional poetic concerns and style exerted a major influence on American thought and literature. Born near Huntington, New York, Whitman was the second of a family of nine children. His father was a carpenter. The poet had a particularly close relationship with his mother. When Whitman was four years old, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he attended public school for six years before being apprenticed to a printer. Two years later he went to New York City to work in printing shops. He returned to Long Island in 1835 and taught in country schools. In 1838 and 1839 Whitman edited a newspaper, the

Thomas Hampson on Whitman's compassion W alt Whitman caroled throughout his verse. For the Bard of Democracy, as America came to call our great poet, music was a central metaphor in his life and work, both as a metaphysical mindset and as a practical reality. Whitman was blessed with an extraordinary ear for inner rhythms which he then articulated in the radically free, rolling, thrusting verses which revitalized the entire world of poetic language. That same ear led him to the appreciation of classical music. For the poet this was a largely self-taught quest in which he relied on both his innate musicality and his experience as a music journalist to formulate aesthetic principles that would carry over into his poetry. Walt Whitman's publication of Leaves of Grass in July 1855 represented nothing short of a radical shift in American poetry. Written in free verse Leaves of Grass (which he printed himself), he did not include his name on the title page. Instead, he presented his readers with a picture of himself, dressed in casual working man's clothes, as the representative of the American collective self. Challenging tradition and shocking readers, Whitman's book was a revolutionary manifesto advocating a new style and a new purpose for American literature, as well as a new identity for the American poet.
No one could have predicted from Whitman's upbringing that he would emerge as a revolutionary poet. Born to a working-class family in New York, Walter Whitman received only six years of formal education before going to work at the age of eleven. He started out as an office boy and later became a printer's apprentice, a journalist, a teacher, and finally an editor. Over the course of his career, he edited or contributed to more than a dozen newspapers and magazines in the New York area, as well as working briefly in 1848 in New Orleans as an editor for the New Orleans Crescent. As a newspaperman, he was exposed to and participated in the important political debates of his time, usually affiliating himself with the radical Democrats.

This slim volume, containing twelve poems and a long prose preface, was continually revised and enlarged by Whitman. The book went through eleven successive editions until the time of Whitman's death in 1892, by which time 283 poems had been added. Walt Whitman, 1819-1892.

    WALT WHITMAN (1819-1892)
Leaves of Grass . Brooklyn, N.Y., 1855. Walt Whitman - a remarkable and individual poet, prose writer, journalist, philosopher, outspoken herald of American democracy, and supreme egoist - is one of America's towering literary figures, and his Leaves of Grass is one of the most celebrated and, along with Faulkner's The Marble Faun , most sought-after of American first editions. This slim volume, containing twelve poems and a long prose preface, was certainly Whitman's personal favorite, and he continued to revise and enlarge it through eleven successive editions to the time of his death (by which time 283 poems had been added). The poems are imbues with a fiercely independent American spirit that was so much a part of Whitman's character. The copy exhibited is a later issue of the first edition. Since copies of the first edition were bound up as required, they show all kind of subtle variants in text and binding between the earliest and latest issues. This copy is distinguished as a later issue by its eight preliminary pages of advertisements or reviews, and by its green cloth binding, blind stamped on its back cover, with the title in gold on the front cover and spine.

Biography: Walt Whitman (1819-1892) Now revered as one of America's great poets, Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was a controversial figure in his own time. When Whitman published the first version of his greatest book, Leaves of Grass, in 1855, the poems it contained praised the sensuality and the comradeship of the common man. Whitman's rough-hewn celebration of the body and sweat and father-juice was shocking to most of his readers.
Walt with lover Peter Doyle The few reviewers that liked the book admired Whitman's vision of America as a classless society and his adulation of America's working stiffs, but others suspected that the "comradely love" Whitman venerated covered darker motives, perhaps even the "Peccatum illud horribile, inter Christianos non nominandum" - the horrible sin not to be named among Christians. Whitman had a series of male lovers, but he worked hard to keep his relationships secret so when he was pressed by an English devotee to answer whether comradely love meant "physical intimacies," Whitman wrote back to say he found such "morbid inferences" damnable. In spite of Whitman's protestations, many men found the love of comrades an apt description of their own sexual desires. Whitman's example inspired admirers like

    Whitman and Transcendentalism
Was Walt Whitman a Transcendentalist? Had he been been older, born into the educated class, gone to Harvard, and lived in Boston or Concord, there would be little doubt, although it's interesting to consider what kind of impact he might have had on the transcendental circle. But he was a late bloomer, coming to poetry at the age of 37, after a career as a journalist, spurred on by his reading of Emerson. He was certain that HE was the poet that Emerson called for in "The Poet," a characterization that he makes clear in his Preface to the 1855 Leaves of Grass . Although his poetry has many characteristics of transcendental thought and practice, being the bold, new poetic American voice that the transcendentalists had hoped for, his most "transcendental" poems are probably "Song of Myself" [web study text] because of its vision of the self and its relationship to the universe, "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking," [web study text] because of its dramatization of the evolution of the poet, and "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" [web study text] because of how he uses nature as symbol.

    Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
Quoted by Paul Harris in "My Road to Rotary" in the context of how a boy is shaped and thus shapes the man. And, near the end of this book, he again quotes the poet from an essay written around 1876. This fisherman, editor, journalist, carpenter, bureaucrat, and poet revolutionized poetry by choosing such uncommon subjects such as the "values of the common, the miracle of the mouse, the wholesome soundness of the calloused hand, the body's sweat," and men and women's sexuality in his anthology Leaves of Grass. His free verse, use of rhythm and choice of symbols pushed the limits of the poetic form and made it accessible even to the common man/woman. Several of his masterpieces include the poems " When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd ," or "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking" where he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln and his cause and which revealed his American democratic idealism. He sympathized with the efforts to end slavery and save the Union during the American Civil War.
