Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
I use the 1855 versions of "Song of Myself" and "The Sleepers" because I think these poems represent Whitman at his unrevised best. I begin with a biographical introduction, stressing Whitman's active engagement as radical Democrat and party journalist in the major political conflicts of pre-Civil War America. The inscription poem "One's-Self I Sing" and his vision of the poet balanced between pride and sympathy in the 1855 Preface serve as a good introduction to "Song of Myself." I usually begin by asking the students to talk about Whitman's free verse technique. What ordering devices does he use in the opening lines to achieve his poetic design: these include repetition, biblical parallelism, rhythmic recurrence, assonance, and consonance. Section 15 is a good illustration of the ways Whitman's catalog technique serves as a democratizing device, inscribing the pattern of many and one. By basing his verse in the single, end-stopped line at the same time that he fuses this linethrough various linking deviceswith the larger structure of the whole, Whitman weaves an overall pattern of unity in diversity. This pattern of many and onethe e pluribus unum that was the revolutionary seal of the American republicis the overarching figure of Leaves of Grass I present "Song of Myself" as a drama of democratic identity in which the poet seeks to balance and reconcile major conflicts in the body politic of America: the conflict between "separate person" and "en masse," individualism and equality, liberty and union, the South and the North, the farm and the city, labor and capital, black and white, female and male, religion and science. One can discuss any of the individual sections of the poem in relation to this conflict. Moments of particular conflict and crisis occur in sections 28 and 38. I ask the students to discuss the specific nature of the crisis in each of these sections. Both involve a loss of balance.

, poet. Born on Long Island, New York, Whitman was the son of a house builder. Largely self-educated, he learned the printer's trade and taught school. Between 1838 and 1855 he edited papers in New York, Brooklyn, and New Orleans while turning out unremarkable poems, sketches, and stories and immersing himself in political and cultural life. He delighted in oratory and grand opera, became a devotee of phrenology, and mixed happily with urban crowds, relishing ferry-boat pilots, Broadway omnibus drivers, firemen, and Bowery roughs. His mind was "simmering" as he took in the kaleidoscopic scene—his reading Shakespeare, Carlyle, Goethe, George Sand, and, above all, Emerson brought it to a "boil." Out of this chemistry came Leaves of Grass. What he called a "language experiment" exfoliated in successive stages from the 12 poems of the 1855 edition to the more than 350 poems of the "deathbed" edition of 1891. It was at once a ventilation of his mind and memory and a qualified celebration of American history, politics, geography, occupations, and speech. Whitman's protean work was slow to win acceptance. Antebellum reviewers, shocked by his anatomical delineations of the "body electric," pronounced him the "dirtiest beast" of his age and mocked his neologisms and stylistic oddities. Today he is recognized as one of the most original and influential American poets and by some as a forerunner of homosexual liberation.

Born in Huntington, Long Island, on May 31, 1819, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Walt Whitman was the second eldest of nine children. Out of school as early as 13, he soon started work as a typesetter, from 1836 to 1841 taught in schools, and thereafter worked as a journalist with many newspapers and magazines, becoming editor of the Democratic Brooklyn Eagle 1846-48 and of the Brooklyn Times 1857-59. • Born: 31 May 1819 Birthplace: Long Island, New York Died: 26 March 1892 Best Known As: The poet who wrote Leaves of Grass
Walt Whitman was a 19th century writer whose life's work, Leaves of Grass , made him one of the first American poets to gain international attention. Whitman spent most of his young life in Brooklyn, where he worked as a printer and newspaper journalist through the 1850s. The first edition of Leaves of Grass was privately printed in 1855 and consisted of 12 untitled poems, one of which was to later become famous as "Song of Myself." His literary style was experimental, a free-verse avalanche in celebration of nature and self that has since been described as the first expression of a distinctly American voice. Although Leaves of Grass did not sell well at first, it became popular in literary circles in Europe and, later, the United States, and Whitman published a total of eight editions during his lifetime. During the Civil War Whitman moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as a civil servant and volunteer nurse. There he published the poetry collections

Index Born on Long Island, New York, Walt Whitman was a part-time carpenter and man of the people, whose brilliant, innovative work expressed the country's democratic spirit. Whitman was largely self-taught; he left school at the age of 11 to go to work, missing the sort of traditional education that made most American Leaves of Grass (1855), which he rewrote and revised throughout his life, contains "Song of Myself," the most stunningly original poem ever written by an American. The enthusiastic praise that Emerson and a few others heaped on this daring volume confirmed Whitman in his poetic vocation, although the book was not a popular success. A visionary book celebrating all creation, Leaves of Grass was inspired largely by Emerson's writings, especially his essay "The Poet," which predicted a robust, open-hearted, universal kind of poet uncannily like Whitman himself. The poem's innovative, unrhymed, free-verse form, open celebration of sexuality, vibrant democratic sensibility, and extreme Romantic assertion that the poet's self was one with the poem, the universe, and the reader permanently altered the course of American poetry. Leaves of Grass is as vast, energetic, and natural as the American continent; it was the epic generations of American critics had been calling for, although they did not recognize it. Movement ripples through "Song of Myself" like restless music:
