Headquarters AMC restructures to better meet Army objectives ALEXANDRIA, Va. The U.S. Army Materiel Command provisionally realigned its headquarters structure May 1 to enhance its responsiveness, effectiveness, and integration and to ensure that the headquarters is performing the right functions to support the Army. The structure is aligned as a "G staff," so named because the staff reports to a general officer. This type of staff not only will allow AMC to be more operationally focused, but is more familiar and understandable to soldiers. "Change is hard work, but it's vital if we want to be more adaptable to the 21st century. We're not just relabeling our staff, but are actually implementing a fundamental change in how AMC does business to be more functional and more focused on the kinds of problems that the Army is trying to solve," said Gen. Paul J. Kern, commanding general. The new staff includes: G-1, headed by Melinda M. Darby, includes the former deputy chief of staff for personnel, the offices of the surgeon and safety, and the former deputy chief of staff for installation management. G-2, headed by Col. Charles M. Borg, includes the former deputy chief of staff for intelligence.

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFPN) A successful flight test of the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile was conducted recently at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The flawless unpowered test indica tes a problem with the missile's electrical system experienced during the missile's first flight test April 8 has been remedied. During the test, the missile was launched from an Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., F-16 flying at Mach .7 at 15,000 feet. The missile's wing and tail surfaces deployed, and it conducted several maneuvers as it glided 8 to 10 miles during the 90-second flight. JASSM is the next generation long-range cruise missile that uses advanced global positioning system/inertial navigation system guidance. The Air Force is committed to buy 2,400 JASSMs from prime contractor Lockheed Martin, Orlando, Fla., but intends to purchase up to 4,000 if funding can be obtained.

White Sands Missile Range, located west of White Sands National Monument 47 miles from Alamogordo, is the premier test range in the world. The Army installation range is committed to testing for government agencies, the Department of Defense and both private entities and foreign countries. The Range covers two million acres (3200 square miles). The Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), Patriot, Army Tactical Missile System and the Theater High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) are tested at the range on a regular basis. Also located on the Range is Trinity Site, where the world's first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945. McDonald ranch house, where the plutonium core was assembled, remains at the site. The concept for the Bataan Memorial Death March started with a young ROTC cadet and a bet over pizza.
The credit for what has become America's largest military march belongs to Major Ray Pickering, now studying at the Army's Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
It was 1987 and the Las Cruces native needed a special project for the spring semester of his senior year in the New Mexico State University Army ROTC program.
"Before going to NMSU, I had been an enlisted soldier and I knew about the Nijmegen March in the Netherlands," he said.

Schiff Straddles "Crashed Saucer" Fence to Explain Request That GAO Investigate "Roswell Incident"
Ever since the story broke in the January issue of SUN and the Jan. 13 edition of the Albuquerque Journal that Congressman Steve Schiff (R-NM) had requested the General Accounting Office (GAO) to investigate the "Roswell crashed-saucer incident," Schiff has gone to great lengths to explain that he's not really that interested in UFOs and that he questions whether an ET craft crashed in New Mexico in 1947. But on the other hand... In the Albuquerque Journal article, Schiff was quoted as saying: "It's not a light thing to ask a government agency to look into something, but the government has been accused of cover-up. I would not ask for an investigation of something I was just curious about. The issue is whether the government is being forthright with the American people, and that is a serious issue to me....I just assume that if there were alien bodies at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, somebody would have discovered them during all these years. On the other hand, you have to say that anything is possible as long as the government won't talk." When interviewed for a story published in the Jan. 14 edition of The Washington Post, Schiff was quoted as saying: "Generally, I'm a skeptic on UFOs and alien beings, but there are indications from the run-around that I got that whatever it was, it wasn't a balloon. Apparently it's another government coverup."

"The Green River Launch Complex, located southeast of Green River, Utah, was the northern annex of the U.S. Army's White Sands Missile Range during the Cold War. From 1964 to 1973 the U.S. Air Force launched 141 Athena missiles a distance of more than 400 miles from Green River to White Sands in New Mexico as part of the Defense Department's Advanced Ballistic Re-entry Systems (ABRES) program. Tracked by radar as they re-entered the atmosphere, the Athena missiles conducted research intended to improve and protect the warheads of nuclear missiles. Green River also hosted live firing exercises of
the Army's Pershing missiles until 1974." Joel W. Powell This collection consists of newspaper articles and photographs, and may be searched or browsed. Marshall Space Flight Center, Hunstville, AL (Phone: 205/544-0031) RELEASE: 96-92 WITH GROUND TESTS COMPLETE, DC-XA TO RESUME FLIGHTS THIS MONTH The Delta Clipper-Experimental Advanced (DC-XA), a single stage rocket developed by NASA and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, yesterday completed a series of ground tests at the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and now is being readied for flight. The DC-XA will undergo a series of five flight tests beginning no earlier than May 17. The date for the first test will be determined later this week. "Flight testing the DC-XA will provide information about the performance of composite materials and other advanced technologies in the launch vehicle as it encounters the conditions of flight, such as temperature, pressure and noise. This information will be very valuable for the X-33 technology demonstrator NASA and an industry partner will develop in the future," said Dan Dumbacher, NASA's DC-XA program manager at the Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL. Marshall is the host center for NASA's Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology Program. The U.S. Air Force's Phillips Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, will manage flight test operations. The DC-XA evolved from the DC-X, which the U.S. Air Force flew eight times between August 1993 and July 1995. The 43-foot-high existing airframe was extensively modified by replacing existing systems with a composite hydrogen tank; a Russian-built aluminum-lithium alloy liquid oxygen tank; a composite intertank to connect the hydrogen and oxygen tanks; and an auxiliary propulsion system which includes a composite liquid hydrogen feedline, a composite liquid hydrogen valve, a liquid-to-gas conversion system reaction control system, and a Russian auxiliary power unit providing redundant hydraulic power for flight control.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 22, 2000) - The Army will give one lucky person the chance to be an Apache pilot and paratrooper in a new program aimed to raise awareness of the military.
The Department of Defense announced May 18 a partnership with Internet search engine Yahoo! to co-sponsor the "Fantasy Careers in Today's Military" contest.
Defense officials described it as "A new advertising initiative to raise awareness about today's military by using the Internet as the medium."
They also said the contest is designed to expose the public to the military's role.
"There are increasingly fewer Americans who have direct experience with today's military, fewer people who know someone who has served or is serving in uniform," said Navy Cmdr. Yvette Brown-Wahler, assistant director for recruiting plans.
"With fewer military connections to society and fewer adult influencers to discuss career options, generations of youth receive less exposure to military opportunities, benefits, careers and even its adventures.
