Bataan Memorial March set for April 16
WASHINGTON Registration/information brochures are available for the Bataan Memorial Death March to be conducted at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., April 16, 2000. This is the 12th year for the popular memorial march which recognizes the sacrifices made by thousands of U.S. and Filipino service members overwhelmed by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Since its inception, the memorial march has grown from about 100 participants to more than 2,400. At least 3,000 marchers are expected for the 2000 event. As a sports event, the march is "just about as challenging as they come, especially in today's realm of extreme sports," says Capt. Paul Zeps, a member of the Bataan Memorial Death March Project Office. He stresses that advanced preparation is a must. "You've got to be in shape and train before attempting this march. It's particularly important if you're not acclimated to New Mexico's high desert environment." The march starts on the missile range main post, crosses hilly terrain, winds around a small mountain and returns to the finish line through sandy desert trails and washes. The elevation varies from about 4,100 to 5,300 feet. This year, the course will be extended from 25 to 26.2 miles. While now marathon length, the memorial march is not a sanctioned marathon.

From Los Alamos to Trinity Site, here's where to learn about the atomic bomb's development EVER SINCE SPANISH explorers struggled over its harsh terrain, this scorching alkaline flat southeast of Socorro has been known as Jornada del Muerto: Journey of Death. It's an evocative name; even when you cross it by car, this barren landscape can still be intimidating. But the centuries-old name takes on a peculiar and prophetic resonance when you stop and contemplate this site's role as the place where the first atomic bomb was tested. That teston July 16, 1945marked not only a turning point in World War II but the start of the Atomic Age. It was the culmination of work on the Manhattan Project, an amazing technological achievement that began 50 years ago at Los Alamos, northwest of Santa Fe.

"MISSILE RANGER" - August 15, 1986 Red Canyon Range Camp, in the northeast corner of White Sands Missile Range, was once a booming center for Army public relations and troop training. Today, it is cracked concrete slabs, deteriorating roads and a couple of crumbling fire control bunkers. Graffiti marks many of the remaining foundations and deer and antelope are the most frequent visitors. It is a ghost town. However, from 1953 through 1959 more than 10,000 visitors from 45 countries and 40 States passed through the camp to see some of the 3,000 Nike Ajax missiles fired by air defense troop units. About 300 troops were assigned to Red Canyon to run the facility. On some days the mess hall served as many as 1,500 meals. The camp was opened in October 1953 by Fort Bliss as a place to conduct Nike Ajax training and annual service firings. At the time, Fort Bliss did not have the necessary area for such a mission. White Sands allowed the use of the northeast corner of the range as a temporary facility. Eventually, Fort Bliss established McGregor Range closer to the fort and moved the air defense firings there in August 1959. What is left of the camp is about four miles south of US Highway 380 with the turnoff being 16 miles west of Carrizozo, N.M. That's 165 miles from Fort Bliss headquarters. At the turnoff, a gate made of red rock still stands where the camp had its outer entrance. At one time both sides of the gate were topped with Nike missiles.

On the 50th Anniversary of the Atomic Bomb
White Sands Missile Range
White Sands Missile Range has developed from a simple desert testing site for the V-2 into one of the most sophisticated test facilities in the world. The mission of White Sands Missile Range begins with a customera service developer, or another federal agency, which is ready to find out if engineers and scientists have built something which will perform according to job specifications. It ends when an exhaustive series of tests has been completed and a data report has been delivered to the customer. Between the beginning and the end of the test program, be it the Army Tactical Missile System or newly designed automobiles, range employees are involved in every operation connected with the customer and his product. The range can and does provide everything from rat traps to telephones, from equipment hoists and flight safety to microsecond timing. We shake, rattle and roll the product, roast it, freeze it, subject it to nuclear radiation, dip it in salt water and roll it in the mud. We test its paint, bend its frame and find out what effect its propulsion material has on flora and fauna. In the end, if it's a missile, we fire it, record its performance and bring back the pieces for post mortem examination. All test data is reduced and the customer receives a full report.

37. Trinity Site
For more information contact the Missile Range Public Affairs Office at (505) Once on White Sands Missile Range the route is the main paved road.
http://www.swcp.com/~nmts/rides/trinitySite.htm
Trinity Site Tour Trinity Site Monument The popular, interesting Trinity Site Tour begins and ends in San Antonio, 10 miles south of Socorro. The Trinity Site is the site of the first detonation of an atomic bomb in 1945. The scenery is wonderful, since the area has not been grazed since 1945. The tour is quite flat but there may be winds since it is wide open. There are great views of the low Oscura Mountains to the east. The Little Burro Mountains are visible to the southeast of the route and the Mockingbird Mountains are south. Interestingly, the southern-most road is the northern perimeter of the White Sands Missile Range Century that starts and ends in Tularosa.
There is no public vehicular traffic after entering the Stallion gate which is a real treat. Since we ride on the weekend there is very little worker vehicle traffic. Spring or fall is the best time for this ride since it is very hot in the summer.
From San Antonio ride east about 12 miles on US380 to the Stallion Range turnoff. Then ride south about 5 miles to the Stallion Range entrance. At the entrance you can pickup pamphlets if you don't have one. Then ride south about 13 miles south. Turn left (east) at the Permanent High Explosive Testing Site (there are signs) and ride the final 4 miles. Soon after the turn the circular Trinity Site area can be seen in the distance.
A side trip to the McDonald ranch, where the first bomb was assembled, is sometimes allowed on the way south. This is about a mile off the pavement on a packed gravel road rideable by road bikes and tandems.

Joy, Paul Arthur selected for WSMR Hall of Fame
By Jim Eckles Public Affairs Office Jun 17, 2005, 07:54 am Email this article Printer friendly page Two engineers, Joy Arthur and Paul Arthur, will be honored on July 14 when they will be inducted into the White Sands Missile Range Hall of Fame. It will be the first time a husband and wife have been singled out to join the select White Sands group that includes Clyde Tombaugh and Werhner von Braun. Paul and Joy Arthur have been selected as members of the WSMR Hall of Fame. Induction into the missile range hall of fame is the highest honor White Sands can give an individual locally. It was established in 1980 to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to White Sands during their tenure on the range. Joy Arthur started work at White Sands in 1958 as an engineer in instrumentation development. In 1962 she transferred to the missile range’s Office of Missile Electronic Warfare, now known as the Army Research Laboratory – Survivability, Lethality, Analysis Directorate. Here she found her niche and rose to be a national star in the field of electronic warfare.
