    Nature and the Environment
[c] Lecture 1: The Romance of Nature during the Age of Industrialisation This new mentality was in part a reaction to the scientific revolution of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Newtonian physics saw nature as a giant machine, which God had set in motion and which continued running in fixed ways. Newton argued that God had formed matter in solid, impenetrable particles, which moved in a mechanical way. Plants and animals were seen to be no more than machines, without any sensibility. There was a belief that this `machine' could be understood through careful measurement and classification of the parts. This involved breaking wholes into their constituent parts. A reductionist approach. Led to a concentration on analysis of the individual parts of a system rather than the organic whole.
In natural science this was seen very strongly in Carl von Linne - popularly known as Linneaus (1717-1778), who devised a system of plant classification. Linneans investigated nature and new worlds to discover plants and animals which could be exploited. The Scotsman Adam Smith - who wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776 - followed in this vein - seeing nature as a storehouse of raw materials to be exploited for the good of humans, using human ingenuity. He argued that the pursuit of self interest by humans created wealth, and this benefited human society as a whole. The philosopher of the emerging capitalist and industrial society in Britain.

Text : Arthur Kruckeberg. 1991. The Natural History of Puget Sound (Seattle, Wash.: University of Washington Press). For all the field labs., dress for wet, cold conditions, and bring a weatherproof field notebook for notes and sketches. These field sessions are intended to acquaint you with some of the major tree species native to the Pacific Northwest, to introduce some common plant community types, and to observe how environmental factors (especially variations in temperature and moisture availability) influence the appearance and structural character of forest stands. Some familiarity with trees in their natural settings will give you a foundation for understanding how forests may respond to the atmospheric changes we will discuss in class.

2.1 The History of Science Poetry
Science Fiction Poetry has a prehistory from before the genre of Science Fiction was established. To understand this, we consider the history of natural history and science in poetry from Ancient Greece through the early 20th Century, when Science Fiction and Fantasy became recognized as distinct genres, and note the poetic output of major non-genre scientists. Poetry was at one time the language of philosophy, science, and all serious thought. Major treatments of Science expressed as Poetry included the works of Lucretius (especially De Rerum Natura ), Parmenides of Elea, Archytas (Pythagorean general, statesman, philanthropist, educator) and Empedocles of Acragas, plus the "Phaenomena" of Aratus and the Latin "Astronomica" of Manilius. Ancient Greek MOUSIKE of Homer, Pindar, and Anaximander preceded prose culture, until Pythagoras identified music with mathematics, Aristotle distinguished Poetry from Rhetoric, and poetry began to separate from science. Aristotle's

Gilbert White's House
The Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793) was author of the world famous 'Natural History of Selborne' and is regarded as England's first ecologist. He lived in The Wakes most of his life. The rooms have been furnished in the 18th century style and include items of his furniture, beautifully embroidered bed hangings and portraits of his family. The original manuscript is also on display. The Garden
The garden is well documented by White and restoration to its 18th century form is nearly complete. Already established are his 'Quincunx', Six Quarters displaying many of the fascinating cultivated plants known to White and Naturalists garden with pond and native species. His brick path leads to the stone ha ha, sundial and part of his fruit wall and in the park a revolving 'Wine Pipe' surveys the parkland and magnificent beech-clad hanger. Old varieties of vegetables and hot beds for melons and cucumbers add further interest. There is always a good selection of unusual plants for sale. The Oates Museum
Two interesting exhibitions commemorate the Oates family and their exploits. Captain Lawrence Oates accompanied Scott to the South Pole and uttered the famous words "I am just going outside. I may be some time" as he left his tent to walk to his death: relics of their ill fated expedition are on display. His uncle, Frank Oates, was a remarkable Victorian explorer and his journeys to South America and South Africa are graphically illustrated.
