Essays in Natural History and Evolution
THE ESSAY
in science is an art form as well as a means of communicating ideas. All scientists publish their findings somewhere, but relatively few produce books or monographs. Even fewer produce essays. Modern readers who are interested in evolution or natural history usually recognize the names Gould, Zimmer and Dawkins as essayists. But relatively few are those who have read Mayr, Simpson, Dobzhansky and many older writers. All of these authors are worth reading today. In some cases they are worth reading not only for the beauty of their prose and the forcefulness of their argument, but also to discover what earlier generations of scientists once thought. Darwin and Wallace are omitted here on purpose. You will find them on my Darwiniana Page

49. Alton
The house of Gilbert White is open to the public and in 2005 celebrates its 50th Gilbert White (17201793) was author of The Natural History of Selborne

Alton
Mentioned in the Domesday Book and dating from Saxon times, Alton is a pleasant little unspoilt market town in northeast Hampshire, southwest of Farnham in Surrey. A Saxon settlement predated Alton. The name Alton may be derived from the Saxon ea-wal-ton , meaning 'the place of the beautiful springs'. Alton is mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1070, King William gave an estate at Alton to Hyde Abbey in Winchester in exchange for land in Winchester on which to build a palace. Edward II granted the town a 9-day fair. Alton would have benefited from being on an important trade route running between Winchester and London. The 'Alton Machine', a six-horse stagecoach, passed through Alton en-route to London or Southampton. Alton is fortunate in that it still retains many of its original buildings, which line the main street. Many of these buildings retain their original shop fronts. Alton is not clone town , identikit shops which are found in every town centre. There are a few High Street names, including a supermarket, but these are not large and so compliment rather than compete with the smaller shops. Most of the shops are independent family businesses. There are two independent butchers, which can be found at either end of the town. There is also an independent greengrocer which doubles as a florist. The greengrocer is not as good as the one to be found in Farnham.

The catalogue file at the British Museum (Natural History) suggests Wilkes' vital dates are 17 to 1811. I think that is unlikely as a death date. As this would imply his description (in a work published in weekly installments) was published 5 years posthumously. However, my source that suggested a death date of 1829 for Wilkes suggested a birthdate of 1796, the year the Encycl.Londinensis began publication, so probably his biographical dates should simply be regarded as uncertain. ...rigorous thinking in the solitude of his study led him ineluctably to the conclusion that neither he himself nor the physical world could be known to exist. But as soon as he went outside, he cheerfully admitted, he was as convinced of the reality of his walk through the streets of London as anyone else.

Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.

Personal Sketch
Written for the Portland Transcript
by Sarah Orne Jewett Mrs. Osgood of Bar Mills. One of our Maine women has just died, and "gone into the world of light " about whom I cannot resist saying a few words, her quiet life seems to me to hold so many good lessons for all the rest of us. I do not know how to tell the tale of the good deeds she wrought. I am not one of the early friends who followed her footsteps most closely, and I have no right to make this in any sense a biographical sketch of her life, except that I do know the lovely qualities of her mind and heart and how eagerly she kept her eyes fixed upon the best things. I do know how well she stood in her lot and place and "made the most," as we say, sometimes, of her advantages. Young people are apt to be wishing for wider opportunities and imagining that it is our surroundings that give us value, as if a tallow candle were any the better light in a golden candlestick ! We cannot be so remote that our minds may not keep in touch with other minds to receive their help and inspiration. We can always learn to know and understand the world about us, we can follow to the skies any highway or byway of our native town. It is in the development of the will, and the gathering of great purposes, that one may make the most and the best of life. To love and look up to some friend who is wiser than we, to help and lead the friend who looks up to us; this joy may be ours, no matter how solitary, how apparently unnourished, how hard-worked and unpromising the daily life may seem in its beginning.
