White, Gilbert English naturalist and cleric. He was the author of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne 1789, which records the flora and fauna of an area of Hampshire.
White studied at Oxford. Although assigned to parishes elsewhere, he chose to live in his native Selborne.
White's book is based on a diary of his observations and on letters to two naturalist friends over a period of about 20 years. Elegantly written, The Natural History contains descriptions of rural life and acute observations of a wide variety of natural-history subjects, such as the migration of swallows, the recognition of three distinct species of British leaf warblers, and the identification of the harvest mouse and the noctule bat as British species.
White also wrote Calendar of Flora and the Garden 1765, an account of observations he made in his garden in 1751, and Naturalist's Journal (begun in 1768).

Gilbert White (1720-1793) was born and died in Selborne, Hampshire, England. He was later to become famed as a great naturalist, and put Selborne on the map with his book 'Tha Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne'. He was ordained as a priest after graduating from Oriel College, Oxford; but never actually practiced in Selborne, and instead focused on writing about natural history to pay his way. Gilberts home in Selborne was a small building that at one stage had been a butchers; and in 1756 he apparently planted four lime trees in order to 'hide the sight of blood and filth from ye windows'. You can still visit his gardens today. Thanks to First Science for biography info.

The Selborne Pioneer: Gilbert White as Naturalist and Scientist, a Re-examination.-Ted Dadswcll. 2003. Ashgate Publishing, Hants, England, and Suite 420, 101 Cherry Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401-4405. xviii + 238 pp., 13 black-and-white plates. ISBN 0-7546-0749-6. Cloth, $79.95.-Gilbert White lived (1720-1793) in the agricultural village of Selborne, England, where "the human ecology was continuous with the non-human." The eldest of seven surviving children, his fishing and hunting as a young man "paved the way" for natural history, while gardening "gave him his naturalists' apprenticeship." He was also an Anglican cleric, a poet, and as Dadswell makes clear in this book, a remarkable pioneering naturalist and clear-headed scientist.

The dawning recognition of sibling species by these two naturalists was not restricted to Phylloscopus. Derham (1718:108) recognized "two sorts (if I mistake not)" of Locustella. White, in a letter to Pennant of 29 May 1769 (White 1813), also thought that he had two Locustella. Derham must have thought these observations important, for together they make up the only footnote that he wrote in his edited production of John Ray's (1628-1705) correspondence. Unlike the situation in Phylloscopus, in which the two sibling species trochilus and collybita were clearly borne out by subsequent naturalists, it is unclear what these observers may have been seeing in Locustella. William Derham was an Englishman whose career was devoted to religion, and he had a strong interest in natural history. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1702, and at the time that his edited volume of John Ray's letters appeared was a canon at Windsor (Encyclopaedia Britannica 1910). His major works were theological, but he contributed to science both by contributing papers to the Transactions of the Royal Society and by editing and publishing several natural-history works that were important in his time (Encyclopaedia Britannica 1910).
