Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918)
President from 1866-1885
A radical idea in American education was born when Andrew Dickson White and Ezra Cornell crossed paths in the New York State Senate. White was a worldly intellectual whose dream was to create a "truly great University" that would "afford an asylum for Science - where truth shall be taught for truth's sake. ..." He and Cornell, a farmer and inventor who made his fortune developing the telegraph system with Samuel F.B. Morse and Hiram Sibley, agreed the new institution would be nonsectarian, a controversial stance for the time.
White and Cornell successfully politicked to obtain the benefits of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862 for their new university. On Feb. 7, 1865, White introduced into the State Senate a bill that established Cornell University as an institution for "the cultivation of the arts and sciences and of literature, and the instruction in agriculture, the mechanic arts and military tactics, and in all knowledge." Gov. Reuben E. Fenton signed the bill that constitutes Cornell's charter two months later on April 27.
White was largely responsible for recruiting faculty to come to the new institution, and as president, he was instrumental in the development of the university's library and its other collections by his own purchases and through encouraging the gifts of others. He traveled in Europe to purchase collections and to learn about the newest innovations in technical education. He initiated other educational developments. He suggested the establishment of mechanical laboratories and workshops for the Department of Mechanical Engineering and bought the first piece of equipment, a power lathe. He promoted the first Department of Electrical Engineering in the United States, taught and encouraged historical studies, and founded the Department of Political Science "for practical training."

Studies in the History of Science The Myth of the Flat Earth Jeffrey Burton Russell A paper by Jeffrey Burton Russell for the American Scientific Affiliation Annual Meeting August 4, 1997 at Westmont College summarizing his book Inventing the Flat Earth: Columbus and Modern Historians (1997) pb. H ow does investigating the myth of the flat earth help teachers of the history of science? First, as a historian, I have to admit that it tells us something about the precariousness of history. History is precarious for three reasons: the good reason that it is extraordinarily difficult to determine "what really happened" in any series of events; the bad reason that historical scholarship is often sloppy; and the appalling reason that far too much historical scholarship consists of contorting the evidence to fit ideological models. The worst examples of such contortions are the Nazi and Communist histories of the early- and mid-twentieth century. Contortions that are common today, if not widely recognized, are produced by the incessant attacks on Christianity and religion in general by secular writers during the past century and a half, attacks that are largely responsible for the academic and journalistic sneers at Christianity today. A curious example of this mistreatment of the past for the purpose of slandering Christians is a widespread historical error, an error that the Historical Society of Britain some years back listed as number one in its short compendium of the ten most common historical illusions. It is the notion that people used to believe that the earth was flatespecially medieval Christians.

2) Body of theoretical knowledge (distinguished from the application thereof, technology)
4) Knowledge obtained from experimental method
5) Tentative knowledge, based on evidence rather than authority or intuition

The Truth shall make you free. St. John, viii, 32. Introduction MY book is ready for the printer, and as I begin this preface my eye lights upon the crowd of Russian peasants at work on the Neva under my windows. With pick and shovel they are letting the rays of the April sun into the great ice barrier which binds together the modern quays and the old granite fortress where lie the bones of the Romanoff Czars. This barrier is already weakened; it is widely decayed, in many places thin, and everywhere treacherous; but it is, as a whole, so broad, so crystallized about old boulders, so imbedded in shallows, so wedged into crannies on either shore, that it is a great danger. The waters from thousands of swollen streamlets above are pressing behind it; wreckage and refuse are piling up against it; every one knows that it must yield. But there is danger that it may resist the pressure too long and break suddenly, wrenching even the granite quays from their foundations, bringing desolation to a vast population, and leaving, after the subsidence of the flood, a widespread residue of slime, a fertile breeding-bed for the germs of disease.

Chapter 7
The Early Church and Science
Before we complete our survey of the teachings of the early church on the early chapters of Genesis it is necessary to discuss a number of general scientific issues that often crop up. One of the most frequent criticisms of the church fathers is made about their anti-intellectualism. Tertullian is the church father who more than any other has been taken to epitomise this view. Tertullian wrote:
  • Their failure to establish any means of accountability to allow the resolution of disputes was already appreciated by Diodorus (c.90-21 BC), Galen (c.130-200 AD) and Claudius Ptolemy (2nd cent. AD) (and other leading thinkers of the 2nd century. Plato and Aristotle being responsible for Valentinian Gnosticism.
  • 3. ) Tertullian himself made use of philosophical (particularly Stoic) ideas in his writings. He agreed with Plato on the matter of the immortality of the soul. He even claimed (as Philo and Justin Martyr had before him) that the philosophers borrowed from the Jewish Scriptures.

For those individuals who consider themselves to be en route, that is, to be on a philosophical or theological journey as opposed to already having arrived at a resolution to their cosmic-scale issues, this investigation may prove helpful. God and the New Metaphysics examines metaphysical and cosmological proposals for an alternate vision of reality. The title of this work is a deliberate play on physicist Paul Davies' volume, God and the New Physics. The difference is that whereas his approach is a scientific one, this study comes to the subject of God and cosmology from a philosophical and theological angle, while at the same time remaining sensitive to scientific concerns. The origin of the universe remains a scientific mystery, but once it was under way, additional mysteries surface. There is a gap in our understanding, presently at least, between the world of chemistry and the onset of biology. How life arose from non-life has not been resolved. Then there is also a gap between biology and psychology, namely how an entire host of metaphysical categories arose, or at least the alleged realities to which they point. These include mind, soul, spirit, consciousness, self-consciousness, awareness, and self-awareness. Mysterious too is not only how the world began but how it will end. While the current analysis cannot hope to unravel these mysteries once and for all, it engages the thought of some of those who begin to disentangle us from the metaphysical knots in which we have tied ourselves. In sequential order it will consult the work of Alfred North Whitehead, James Lovelock, Rupert Sheldrake, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, David Bohm, and sample the thought of several others for the insights they can bestow.
