Name: Andrew Dickson White Birth Date: November 7, 1832 Death Date: November 4, 1918 Place of Birth: Homer, New York, United States Place of Death: Ithaca, New York, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: educator, diplomat Andrew Dickson White Main Biography Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918), American educator and diplomat, helped found Cornell University and became its first president. In 1856 White received his master of arts degree from Yale and then accepted an offer to be professor of history at the nonsectarian University of Michigan. The young, innovative teacher was an immediate success. During his 6 years there he conceived of a new university for central New York that would be shorn of outworn traditions and would offer the broadest opportunities for study in higher education. When his father died in 1862, White returned to New York to handle the business affairs of his father's bank. In 1864 he became a state senator, and in the New York Legislature he joined with another senator, Ezra Cornell, on the problem of utilizing the land grant of the Morrill Act (1862), which provided the state with the means of offering education in agriculture and mechanical arts. White fought to concentrate the Federal aid in one institution, and Cornell agreed to give $500,000 and land for a site to bolster that aim. The result was Cornell University, officially inaugurated in October 1868, with White as its president. He retired from this post in 1885.

ANNALES EDITIONS NET ERRORS PUBLISHED ERRORS ... DR. ANDREW D. WHITE The age of the world Modern writers often, unfairly, single out Archbishop James Ussher as the creator of a chronology that dates creation some 4000 years BCE . But he was neither alone nor first. From St. Jerome to Sir J.G. Wilkinson, such a recent creation date was widely accepted in Western thought. Archbishop Ussher's chronology is also widely misquoted In 1642, Dr. John Lightfoot wrote that man was created at 9:00 a.m., and in 1644, he wrote that the world was created on Sunday, September 12, 3928. In 1650, the Irish Archbishop, James Ussher, published his computations that the world was created on Sunday, October 23rd, 4004, beginning at sunset of the 22nd. In the following excerpt, Andrew D. White doesn't misquote Ussher, but he does completely misrepresent John Lightfoot In 1896, Andrew D. White published a detailed history of the conflict between science and theology , from which these notes are drawn. Suffice it here that the general conclusion arrived at by an overwhelming majority of the most competent students of the biblical accounts was that the date of creation was, in round numbers, four thousand years before our era; and in the seventeenth century, in his great work, Dr. John Lightfoot, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and one of the most eminent Hebrew scholars of his time, declared, as the result of his most profound and exhaustive study of the Scriptures, that "heaven and earth, centre and circumference, were created all together, in the same instant, and clouds full of water," and that "this work took place and man was created by the Trinity on October 23, 4004

    Cornell University Founded (1865)

It was on this date, October 7, 1865, that US businessman Ezra Cornell, and respected scholar Andrew Dickson White, chartered and founded the Ivy League University in Ithaca, New York, known as Cornell. "Uncle Ezra," as he is affectionately known on campus, had a vision: "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." Consequently, students were admitted regardless of sex or religion. Indeed, Cornell University was a rarity in the United States at the time: it was, by explicit design, not affiliated with any religious organization. Co-founder and first college president Andrew Dickson White was an academic with a keen interest in, and scholarly credentials for investigating, the History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom . Indeed, he wrote a two-volume study on the question that was published in 1895. With an academic's clear-eyed reason he argued in Warfare Warfare
