84. Nancy Hendrickson Freelance Writer In San Diego
George Dodge wrote that when the Whale was first harpooned he took a violent plunge and threw his massive tail or flukes high in the air and lashed the sea.

Thar She Blows!
(History Magazine)
On the first night at sea, the Baltic’s greenhorn hands could only wonder at what foolishness possessed them to sign on for a long voyage. Wretchedly seasick, they writhed in their cramped bunks, praying for home. As the next days and weeks passed, the seasickness disappeared but the reality of life onboard a whaler hit home. The mate used a cat-o-nine tails on their backs, and every day was spent in the constant practice of lowering and raising the boats, and learning to handle the long oars. Soon, they settled into the tedium of the long voyage, or what old salts called the “sailor’s horror” . A month into the voyage, a cry was heard from the masthead. “There she bloooooows! There she breaches!” Dodge wrote, “The boats were made ready to lower and everything prepared for the chase.”

Erold Ansell: Whale On A Wing, 1956-1998
June 8, 1998: Erold Ansell, 43, of Cairns, Queensland Australia, died immediately from injuries sustained in a crash with a truck this morning, in the Lake George area of New York, in the USA. Erold leaves his mother Evelyn, and his dearest business associates. And he leaves our motorcycle community grieving the loss of such an unforgettable human. Words are so inadequate.
Bill Dutcher.
What do we say to each other? It's a mark of Erold's impact on people that most of us will have our jaw dropped for quite a while. Spending a week on the road with him is now a precious memory that I'll always treasure, and I only saw a few facets of his personality (the good, the bad and the ugly, the frustrated, the overjoyed, the pride when we had a win, the despair when he had a loss and the sheer joy of life he passed on to everyone he came in contact with :-). When you scan the Wings On The Internet Discussion List, you get some idea of the stature of the bloke when you see everyone he's touched - even for a minute or two (and some who have never even met him), claim him as a friend. I missed the big ugly bugger the day he left, I miss him immensely now, and I know I'll miss him the rest of my life. Selfishly, there were things I want to talk to him about, guidance I wanted to ask for, stunts I want to pull on him, gags I want to prepare at his expense, and a lot of laughs I want to share with him.

Historically this land was home to the Khoi herders who lived an agricultural life style before the European settlers arrived. After 1488, the region became a regular stopping off point for European sailors after rounding the Cape. Dutch settlers moved into the land in the late 18th century and rapidly changed the landscape. Today little remains of the indigenous forest that once covered the regions. Knysna Forest has some excellent preserved original forest land but elsewhere quick growing pines have often been planted. Despite environmental pressures, the Garden Route retains its beauty and still offers a rewarding experience for the adventure or nature based tourist. The Garden Route's 200 km of coastal plains and mountains with a mild climate has allowed a diverse flora to develop, which in turn supports a wide range of bird and animal life.

'You Sir, might own the only live elephant at this fayre, but I owns the only dead'un. Now, a live elephant is not a great rarity, but the chance of seeing a dead'un, comes only once now and again!' Geo. Wombwell to Atkins, his adversary at Bartholomew Fair, 1836. A rather dirty skeleton of a big cat has been perched on top of a cupboard in a teaching laboratory at Aberdeen University's Zoology Department for at least the last 30 years. Recently, Martyn Gorman, the Zoology Museum Curator, climbed up to take a closer look and was intrigued to find an old museum label dated 1866. Tiger skeleton, Aberdeen University After searching through some rather dusty records he now knows rather more about the skeleton's history. It is that of a female Bengal tiger and it used to be part of the collection of specimens that were used to teach comparative anatomy to medical students in days gone by. The skeleton was transferred from the Anatomy Museum to the care of the University Zoologists in about 1966. George Wombwell was born at Wendon Lofts, Essex in 1777. He moved to London in 1800 and opened a cordwainer's shop in Soho's Old Compton Street. However, his career was soon to take a dramatic change in direction. It all started when two large boa constrictors were discovered on a ship in the London Docks. He bought the two serpents for 70 guineas and started to exhibit them in the local hostelries. They must have proved immensely popular with the drinking classes because within 3 weeks Wombwell had recouped his investment. He realised that there was real money to be made from showing exotic animals to the public and started to purchase a variety of beasts, mainly from ships returning to London from all around the world.

Text only Professor Struthers and the Tay Whale This article by M. J. Williams was published in 1996 in the Scottish Medical Journal. (Scot Med J 1996: 41 92-94). It is reproduced with permission. Additional material is shown in red. Introduction Sir John Struthers, MD, LLD, FRCSE (1823-1899) occupied the chair of anatomy in the University of Aberdeen with distinction for 26 years. This was a time of great change in medical education, both locally and nationally. The Aberdeen Medical School had been launched in 1860, following the enforced fusion by the University Commissioners of the previously separate universities and medical schools at King's and Marischal Colleges. Medical teaching was thereafter centred at Marischal College, and John Struthers, who was appointed professor of anatomy in 1863, by his forceful personality, was to emerge as a major figure in local medical politics. He was the initial proponent of the proposal to establish a chair in pathology, eventually endowed in 1882, was the driving force behind the reorganisation and extensions to the Old Infirmary Buildings at Woolmanhill, and was much involved with the major extensions at Marischal College. In 1883, he was also appointed Aberdeen University member of the recently established General Medical Council, and was later elected chairman of their education committee, and had a profound influence on medical education in the United Kingdom. It was on his initiative that the council endorsed the motion to extend the course of study for a medical qualification from four years, which was then common, to at least five years, and introduced proposal to strengthen clinical training.

    INSIDE THE WHALE (1940)
    I
    II
With rue my heart is laden For golden friends I had, For many a roselipt maiden And many a lightfoot lad. By brooks too broad for leaping The lightfoot boys are laid; The roselipt girls arc sleeping In fields Where roses fade. The sun burns on the half-mown hill, By now the blood has dried; And Maurice among the hay lies still And my knife is in his side. And again: They hand us now in Shrewsbury jail And whistles blow forlorn, And trains all night groan on the rail To men who die at morn. The diamond drops adorning The low mound on the lea, These arc the tears of morning, That weeps, but not for thee. But the first thing one would notice about the group of writers I have named above is that they do not look like a group. Moreover several of them would strongly object to being coupled with several of the others. Lawrence and Eliot were in reality antipathetic, Huxley worshipped Lawrence but was repelled by Joyce, most of the others would have looked down on Huxley, Strachey, and Maugham, and Lewis attacked everyone in turn; indeed, his reputation as a writer rests largely on these attacks. And yet there is a certain temperamental similarity, evident enough now, though it would not have been so a dozen years ago. What it amounts to is PESSIMISM OF OUTLOOK. But it is necessary to make clear what is meant by pessimism. And again: The poets of NEW SIGNATURES have swung back. . . to the Greek preference for information or statement. Then first requirement is to have something to say, and after that you must say it as well as you can.

St. George, Granite Town, First Falls is a loyalist town, historic in culture, diverse in architecture; featuring Canada's oldest Presbyterian Kirk. Boasting the highest tides in the world the Bay of Fundy has been home to generations of Charlotte County fisherman. The shores around St. George are dotted with herring weirs while the town is the centre of the largest aquaculture industry in North America. Here, old meets new as traditional and modern fisheries blend. Salmon cages merge with herring weirs, lobster traps and scallop drags to form the mainstay of the local economy.
