INTRO: Each spring, bowhead whales return to the Arctic Ocean after a year feeding in the Bering Sea that separates Alaska and Russia. Awaiting them in Alaska are both hunters and scientists. As Doug Schneider reports in this week's Arctic Science Journeys Radio, bowhead numbers are at their highest level in nearly a decade. STORY: The annual hunt for bowhead whales is finally over in the Inupiat Eskimo village of Barrow, on Alaska's north coast. Native hunters harvested 20 bowheads that were each processed and divided among village residents. North Slope Borough whale biologist Craig George says this year's hunt was a good one, despite the broken ice that choked open leads and fog that made for poor visibility. GEORGE: "It was a pretty typical year. In fact we had a lot of heavy multiyear ice which was driven in by strong southwest wind events. We had a pretty good season. I think 20 whales were landed. There are more whales that are struck and lost so the total mortality to the herd is higher." While hunters were busy looking for whales to harvest, scientists stayed busy conducting the first comprehensive census of the bowhead population since 1993.

When Henry Miller's novel, TROPIC OF CANCER, appeared in 1935, it was
greeted with rather cautious praise, obviously conditioned in some cases
by a fear of seeming to enjoy pornography. Among the people who praised
it were T. S. Eliot, Herbert Read, Aldous Huxley, John dos Passes, Ezra
Poundon the whole, not the writers who are in fashion at this moment.
And in fact the subject matter ofthebook, and to a certain extent its
mental atmosphere, belong to the twenties rather than to the thirties.
TROPIC OF CANCER is a novel in the first person, or autobiography in the
form of a novel, whichever way you like to look at it. Miller himself

George H. Perkins
Following the original observations by Zadock Thompson in the 1850's, little significant work on the whale skeleton was done until 1908, when Vermont State Geologist George H. Perkins published an article entitled: Fossi l Cetacea of the Pleistocene of the United States and Canada (with special reference to Delphinapterus vermontanus , Thompson) . In it, Perkins provided detailed measurements of the bones and teeth, and speculated on the major questions of the w hales age, lineage and evolutionary history. The following are direct quotes from Perkin's work: "...the most important question...is whether the Vermont specimen possesses sufficient differences from Delphinapterus leucas to confirm Thompson's name vermontana . That the generic status of the specimen is correctly determined, that is, that it is a true Delphinapterus , there is, I think, no doubt, but whether it is identical with the living species leucas or should be placed as a new species, as Thompson thought, is not so readily decided." "Anyone who has studied the skeletons of living cetacea (whales) to any extent has soon become convinced of the difficulty, which in many cases amounts to impossibility, of satisfactorily determining the specific identity of two skeletons, or pa rts of them, unless there is opportunity to make direct comparison of the bones. Even then it is not always easy to arrive at certainty. The difficulties arise from the considerable individual variation in the same species and in a greater or less gener al similarity which is found in skeletons of different species or even genera."

Inside The Whale by George Orwell
Part III I first met Miller at the end of 1936, when I was passing through Paris on my way to Spain. What most intrigued me about him was to find that he felt no interest in the Spanish war whatever. He merely told me in forcible terms that to go to Spain at that moment was the act of an idiot. He could understand anyone going there from purely selfish motives, out of curiosity, for instance, but to mix oneself up in such things from a sense obligation Marxist Quarterly In Max and the White Phagocytes The Dream of Philip the Second . Huxley remarks that the people in El Greco's pictures always look as though they were in the bellies of whales, and professes to find something peculiarly horrible in the idea of being in a 'visceral prison'. Miller retorts that, on the contrary, there are many worse things than being swallowed by whales, and the passage makes it dear that he himself finds the idea rather attractive. Here he is touching upon what is probably a very widespread fantasy. It is perhaps worth noticing that everyone, at least every English-speaking person, invariably speaks of Jonah and the whale what accepting It will be seen what this amounts to. It is a species of quietism, implying either complete unbelief or else a degree of belief amounting to mysticism. The attitude is '

Introduction
The earliest known whales lived between 40 and 50 million years ago. Their bodies were extremely long, the front limbs had already evolved into flippers for steering under water. The hind legs had become very small but they still stuck out from they body. This mammal was known as the Pakicetus, an ancestor of the whale. This ancient relative of the whale evolved from land mammals.

Food, Eating and Hunting
Killer Whales have huge appetites. One male whale had 13 porpoises and 14 seals in its stomach. Killer Whales don't only eat whales, they also eat squid, sea elephants, seals, dolphins, narwhals, polar bears and will occasionally attack schools of salmon and tuna. Some Killer Whales need to eat three seal pups a day in order to survive. Killer Whales can tell the difference between an adult seal and a pup seal by the splashes they make. Killer Whales are very clever hunters. They travel in schools and attack even the blue whale. They always attack in groups. Some people call the Killer Whale "wolves of the sea" because they hunt in packs like wolves. They will circle their prey and bite its stomach or make its prey open its mouth and seize its tongue. A Killer Whale will bump or tip ice floats to dislodge seals which they can easily catch in the water. Killer Whales are one of the few whales that can come up on land. They do this because they try to force seals into the water so they can kill them and eat them. They also do this to the polar bear but they have to break through the ice and sometimes they actually have to come up on the ice which is very dangerous for them.

The Honour and Glory of Whaling. There are some enterprises in which a careful disorderliness is the true method. The more I dive into this matter of whaling, and push my researches up to the very spring-head of it so much the more am I impressed with its great honourableness and antiquity; and especially when I find so many great demi-gods and heroes, prophets of all sorts, who one way or other have shed distinction upon it, I am transported with the reflection that I myself belong, though but subordinately, to so emblazoned a fraternity. Akin to the adventure of Perseus and Andromedaindeed, by some supposed to be indirectly derived from itis that famous story of St. George and the Dragon; which dragon I maintain to have been a whale; for in many old chronicles whales and dragons are strangely jumbled together, and often stand for each other. "Thou art as a lion of the waters, and as a dragon of the sea," saith Ezekiel; hereby, plainly meaning a whale; in truth, some versions of the Bible use that word itself. Besides, it would much subtract from the glory of the exploit had St. George but encountered a crawling reptile of the land, instead of doing battle with the great monster of the deep. Any man may kill a snake, but only a Perseus, a St. George, a Coffin, have the heart in them to march boldly up to a whale. Whether to admit Hercules among us or not, concerning this I long remained dubious: for though according to the Greek mythologies, that antique Crockett and Kit Carsonthat brawny doer of rejoicing good deeds, was swallowed down and thrown up by a whale; still, whether that strictly makes a whaleman of him, that might be mooted. It nowhere appears that he ever actually harpooned his fish, unless, indeed, from the inside. Nevertheless, he may be deemed a sort of involuntary whaleman; at any rate the whale caught him, if he did not the whale. I claim him for one of our clan.

Welcome to Outside the Whale...
NOTE - we got things organized and rolling again... I've redone the format of the page, so we've lost some of the other postings.
This webpage was inspired by two essays written by two of the most important writers of the last century - George Orwell and Salman Rushdie.
In 1940, George Orwell wrote an essay called "Inside the Whale." At the time of his writing, fascism and National Socialism were on the march and, it would seem to an interested observer like Orwell, the frontiers of freedom, creativity and openness were on the wane. In this context, Orwell discusses the writings of Henry Miller, in particular his work called "Tropic of Cancer." Orwell finds Miller to be the ideal writer for the new totalitarian age that is to come, a writer who disengages from reality - like Jonah inside the belly of the whale - happy to accept the tragedies and atrocities of the era, including Stalin, Hitler, bombs, trenches and concentration camps. In Orwell's eyes, Miller embodies the writing of the future, a writing that is comfortable, detached and utterly irresponsible. Read the essay here
Almost 50 years later, Salman Rushdie would both respond and expand upon Orwell's ideas in another famous essay called "Outside the Whale." In it, Rushdie challenges the possibility of an author writing "inside the whale", but also, like Orwell, calls for writers to engage with realities of their time, the context of their lives and community, to throw themselves into the "unceasing storm" of politics and creativity.

He did so while being pulled through the water by the whale in an adrenalin-fuelled rescue off Gordon's Bay on Saturday.
Eben Lourens, who modestly played down his part in the daring operation, was at times only a metre from the whale's tail while cutting off the huge bundle of crayfish trap ropes.
'A lot goes through your mind at times like that' "It's not something I'd done before so the adrenalin was pumping through me. But it was very satisfying afterwards," he told Sunday Argus.

George Fitzsimmons
Those who knew George Fitzsimmons were shocked by his death in the tragic fire at Mt Kuring-gai on Thursday 8th June 2000. He was one of three NPWS field officers killed during a back-burning operation designed to protect private homes from bushfires next summer.
George, a Field Officer with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, had been a member of Orrca since 1992. He was a man of diverse talents, and throughout the years he worked selflessly for the organization, offering us all his skills and expertise, and above all complete dedication to the conservation of marine mammals.
He was always willing to discuss ideas about marine mammal rescue operations, and to provide us with encouragement to reach new goals.
One of George's roles in Orrca was directing the Rapid Response Team, which is responsible for rescuing marine mammals entangled in nets and ropes. This is a team of Orrca and NPWS officers who, since 1994, have shared their knowledge and expertise in the classroom and at regular practice days on the Hawkesbury River, disentangling our famous black whale called 'Millie' - a whale that George himself had helped design and build.
Shortly after the team was formed, we had our first challenge: to rescue a seal entangled with ropes and buoys off Sydney Heads. The next challenge was in 1998 with a humpback trailing a huge load of shark netting off Collaroy. The team worked in difficult sea conditions and it was late in the afternoon before the whale was finally freed of its burden and headed south.
