II W HEN one says that a writer is fashionable one practically always means that he is admired by people under thirty. At the beginning of the period I am speaking of, the years during and immediately after the war, the writer who had the deepest hold upon the thinking young was almost certainly Housman. Among people who were adolescent in the years 1910-25, Housman had an influence which was enormous and is now not at all easy to understand. In 1920, when I was about seventeen, I probably knew the whole of the Shropshire Lad by heart. I wonder how much impression the Shropshire Lad Garden of Proserpine With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had,
For many a roselipt maiden
And many a lightfoot lad. By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid;
The roselipt girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade. It just tinkles. But it did not seem to tinkle in 1920. Why does the bubble always burst? To answer that question one has to take account of the external rentier felt it is a valuable document.

For the fact is that being inside a Whale is a very comfortable, cosy, homelike thought. The Whale’s belly is simply a womb big enough for an adult.

III I F I first met Miller at the end of 1936, when I was passing trrough Paris on my way to Spain. What most intrigued me about him was to find that he felt no interest in the Spanish war whatever. He merely told me in forcible terms that to go to Spain at that moment was the act of an idiot. He could understand anyone going there from purely selfish motives, out of curiosity, for instance, but to mix oneself up in such things from a sense obligation Marxist Quarterly The Scholar Gipsy In Max and the White Phagocytes The Dream of Philip the Second whale what accepting about anything, one just writes Mind in Chains) Literary criticism which aims at being Marxist must... proclaim that no book written at the present time Hamlet one any The Black Cat The Tell-tale Heart The Fall of the House of Usher Tales Minuit . The thing that immediately strikes one about Minuit is that there is no reason why any of the events in it should happen. Everything is completely arbitrary; there is no emotional sequence. But this is exactly what one does not why care , of really believing If one looks at the books of personal reminiscence written about the war of 1914-18, one notices that nearly all that have remained readable after a lapse of time are written from a passive, negative angle. They are the records of something completely meaningless, a nightmare happening in a void. That was not actually the truth about the war, but it was the truth about the individual reaction. The soldier advancing into a machine-gun barrage or standing waist-deep in a flooded trench knew only that here was an appalling experience in which he was all but helpless. He was likelier to make a good book out of his helplessness and his ignorance than out of a pretended power to see the whole thing in perspective. As for the books that were written during the war itself, the best of them were nearly all the work of people who simply turned their backs and tried not to notice that the war was happening. Mr E. M. Forster has described how in 1917 he read

Wheel Base
The horizontal distance between wheels on a vehicle. The wheel base was important when using turntables to ensure that the vehicle would fit, and on curves, since vehicles with a short wheelbase will traverse curves more easily.
Wheel Tapper
A man employed to walk along an express train, when stopped at an intermediate station, tapping the carriage wheels with a hammer; any crack in a wheel would be revealed by its failure to ring true; this was a regular practice at Crewe.
Whistle (Engine)
Whistles were not only used as warnings (eg to a gang working on the line) but also for working the trains. At a specific signal box before a junction the driver would indicate, by a pattern of long and short blasts on the whistle, the line the train needed to take at the junction. From that point forward the signalman offered the train to the next box with a bell code

outhern Lake Michigan is known for it's wonderful sailing and cool fresh water, but little has been known about the abundant whale and dolphin population until recently. As winter turns to spring and the cool waters of the lake are warmed by the sun, the fresh water sperm whales and dolphins begin their annual southbound 1300-mile journey from Hudson Bay. Although there are a number of locks at Sault St. Marie, these beautiful and intelligent creatures forge a faster route through nearby streams, and by mid-June, they have reached the breeding grounds of southern Lake Michigan that they know as their "summer home". Freed from the threat of the whalers, taking benefits of the clean waters and abundant food of coho salmon, lake trout and zebra mussels, the whales remain in the southernmost 60 miles of the lake through mid-September.

http://www.geocities.com/xtremekillerwhales/ArticlesOct4A.html
Articles Biologists Looking at Killer Whale Attacks October 4 2003 Biologists don't know whether attacks by killer whales on gray whales are becoming more frequent because of changes in the Bering Sea ecosystem. Recently, a gray whale with bite marks on its flippers and flukes and chunks of flesh ripped away washed up on a Barrow beach. The evidence is consistent with attacks witnessed for decades from the Arctic to Baja California when a pod of killer whales takes on a single gray. "They rip 'em up pretty good," Craig George, a biologist with the North Slope Borough, told The Anchorage Daily News. Residents of False Pass report watching killer whales grabbing gray whales by the snout and tail while others leap onto their backs, perhaps to drown or tire their prey. Off St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, whalers say, orcas repeatedly ram gray whales, then start tearing flesh. The Barrow whale was thought to be a bowhead as it drifted toward town. When it washed up on a beach Sept. 27, it was identified by its short snout and white baleen as a gray whale, George said. A juvenile female showed the classic signs of an orca attack, said George. The tail flukes and dorsal ridge had bite marks, and the tongue, lips and half its jaw were torn free, he said. The rest of the body was essentially untouched.

For hungry whales its a place where dreams come true. Join us whale watching, particularly for the Northern Right Whale. We'll leave Back Bay Harbor passing through the most spectacular scenery in New Brunswick on our way to visit the most extraordinary creatures on earth, the GREAT WHALES! Northern Right Whale
The Northern Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is the world's most endangered large whale. Originally named because they were the 'right' whales to catch, these whales were easy to approach, floated when dead, contained valuable oil and baleen, and found close to shore so they were easy to kill. Their coastal habitat now harbors new threats: Busy shipping lanes bisect the area and fishing activity is intense. For northern right whales today, collisions with vessels and entanglements in fishing gear are every-day hazards. This winter, only three mother-calf pairs were observed in their calving grounds, an unusually low number.

From a mere account of the subject matter of Tropic of Cancer most people would probably assume it to be no more than a bit of naughty-naughty left over from the twenties. Actually, nearly everyone who read it saw at once that it was nothing of the kind, but a very remarkable book. How or why remarkable? That question is never easy to answer. It is better to begin by describing the impression that Tropic of Cancer has left on my own mind. When I first opened Tropic of Cancer Black Spring , was published. By this time Tropic of Cancer was much more vividly present in my mind than it had been when I first read it. My first feeling about Black Spring was that it showed a falling-off, and it is a fact that it has not the same unity as the other book. Yet after another year there were many passages in Black Spring Raffles or the Sherlock Holmes stories, or perverse and morbid books like

Introduction
Bowhead whales, Balaena mysticetus (Fig. 1), are currently listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 (MMPA). The ESA, as amended in 1978, requires the status of populations listed as "endangered" or "threatened" to be reviewed every 5 years. For bowhead whales, an evaluation is to be made as to whether the status of these whales should be revised (i.e., changed to threatened) or whether specific stocks should be removed from the list of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife (50 C.F.R. 17.11). This paper is an update of literature that has become available since the publication of Braham (1984) and a review of elements that may contribute to the evaluation of the status of stocks of bowhead whales.

Detection of stereotypic call sequences are now commonly used to locate blue whales ( Balaenoptera musculus Environmental and habitat features are examined here to investigate oceanographic correlates to the seasonal variability in blue whale call rates and locations in the NW Pacific. Bathymetry and remotely-sensed oceanographic data (i.e., sea surface height, temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration) were compared with call data locations via a geographic information system (GIS). The GIS provides the means to integrate remotely sensed acoustic and satellite data over very broad temporal and spatial scales. The results serve to demonstrate the potential of GIS as a tool for the investigation of habitat associations for blue whales in a remote area and at ecological scales for which standard survey techniques are impractical. Blue Whale Call Detections Blue whale calls were monitored from SOSUS and other offshore hydrophones using the U.S. Navy Ocean Processing Facility (NOPF) on Whidbey Island WA, as described in Watkins et al., (2000a). Blue whale calls were identified by their characteristic long (> 16s) sequences of stereotypic sounds with low frequency (
