Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, Kent. His father was a shopkeeper and a professional cricketer until he broke his leg. In his early childhood Wells developed a love for literature. His mother served from time to time as a housekeeper at the nearby estate of Uppark, and young Herbert studied books in the library secretly. When his father's business failed, Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper. He spent the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea and later recorded them in Kipps (1905). In the story Arthur Kipps is raised by his aunt and uncle. Kipps is also apprenticed to a draper. After learning that he has been left a fortune, Kipps enters the upper-class society, which Wells describes with sharp social criticism. In 1883 Wells became a teacher/pupil at Midhurst Grammar School. He obtained a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London and studied there biology under T.H. Huxley. However, his interest faltered, and in 1887 he left without a degree. He taught in private schools for four years, not taking his B.S. degree until 1890. The next year he settled in London, married his cousin Isabel, and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. From 1893 Wells became a full-time writer. Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine, whom he married in 1895. As a novelist Wells made his debut with

Also Known As: Herbert George Wells [full name] BIOGRAPHY The best known and arguably still the best loved of all British science fiction writers, Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley in Kent, the son of a shopkeeper and a mother who had strong aspirations to join the middles classes. But Wells' early life was far from the relative comfort enjoyed by the middle classes - when his father's business failed, Wells' mother was forced back into domestic service and her aspirations were soon transferred to her son. On leaving school, Wells, like his brothers, was apprenticed to a local draper but his first true calling was as a teacher. In 1883, he took up a post at the Midhurst Grammar School and was suitably inspired to pursue an academic life for himself. On a scholarship, he attended the Normal School of Science in London where he studied biology under the Darwinian T.H. Huxley whose scientific humanism was to inform much of Wells' subsequent thinking. Before graduating, Wells returned to teaching, completing his degree externally and in 1893, he published two textbooks on his chosen subject. At this time, he was working for the University Correspondence College and developing his love of writing. He had published the article

H.G. Wells was an outspoken social reformer, whose works were influenced strongly by a scientific background. Jules Verne had a strong influence on him, and the genre of science fiction owes its visionary aspects to Wells.
He worked as a draper's apprentice, bookkeeper, tutor, and journalist until around 1895, which is when he became a full-time writer.
Wells supported World War One, but, by the Second, he saw no hope for a mankind continually warring.

Universally known as H.G. Wells, he was one of the most popular and widely known authors of his time. This was partly the result of the amazingly wide variety of his interests and subject matter, and although he is perhaps most widely known nowadays as a pioneer of science fiction he is still also celebrated as a (sometimes comic) observer of the English.
Wells was born in Kent. His father is variously described as a failed shopkeeper and professional cricketer, and he himself after an unsuccessful spell as an apprentice draper became first a student teacher in Midhurst and eventually, by dint of various scholarships, made his way to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington (now part of one of Britain's leading scientific institutions, Imperial College). In the Normal School he was taught by, among others, the distinguished biologist T.H. Huxley.
The struggles of his early years provide the background of his semi-autobiographical comic novels such as 'Love And Mr. Lewisham' (1900), 'Kipps' (1905) and 'The History Of Mr Polly' (1910). To some extent such works were also attempts at social commentary, and his interest in contemporary political issues also inspired such novels as 'Ann Veronica' (1909) dealing with feminist issues and 'Tono Bungay' (also 1909) dealing with the power of modern advertising. He continued to display his political enthusiasms as a member of the Fabian Society, then the major intellectual wing of the Labour party, along with colleagues such as
