A cynic is a man who looks at the world with a monocle in his mind's eye.
Carolyn Wells

Advice is one of those things it is far more blessed to give than to receive.
Carolyn Wells

I have always hated biography, and more especially, autobiography. If biography, the writer invariable finds it necessary to plater the subject with praises, flattery, and adulation and to invest him with all Christian graces. If autobiography, the same plan is followed, but the writer apologizes for it.
Carolyn Wells

Of two evils choose the prettier.
Carolyn Wells
The books we think we ought to read are poky, dull, and dry; The books that we would like to read we are ashamed to buy; The books that people talk about we never can recall; And the books that people give us, oh, they're the worst of all. Carolyn Wells 'Tis blessed to bestow, and yet, Could we bestow the gifts we get, And keep the ones we give away, How happy were our Christmas day! Carolyn Wells To make a libraryIt takes two volumes And a fire. Two volumes and a fire, And interest. The interest alone will doIf logs are few.

24. The Technique Of Mystery, Ch. 17: False Devices (1913) By Carolyn Wells

FALSE DEVICES
  • The "Trace" Fallacy
  • The Destruction of Evidence
  • False Hypotheses
  • Errors of Fact and of Inference ...
  • The Locked and Barred Room Several false notions which have been so often exploited as to command belief, the young writer should strive to correct. 1. The "Trace" Fallacy One hackneyed statement, though of great value to a fiction detective, is far from being true. This is the assertion that it is impossible for a human being to go into a room for any purpose and out again without leaving trace of his presence. Sherlock Holmes insists on this, and says, on one occasion: "My good Hopkins, I have investigated many crimes, but I have never yet seen one which was committed by a flying creature. As long as the criminal remains upon two legs so long must there be some indentation, some abrasion, some trifling displacement which can be detected by the scientific searcher. It is incredible that this blood-bespattered room contained no trace which could have aided us. I understand, however, from the inquest that there were some objects which you failed to overlook?" And Mary E. Wilkins in her fine detective story, "The Long Arm," makes the same impressive statement:

    PORTRAITS
  • Some Early Detective Portraits
  • Some More Modern Portraits
  • Some Less Known Portraits
  • Idiosyncrasies of Fictional Detectives ...
  • Favorite Phrases of Detectives The appearance of the detective is always of interest and each author in turn endeavors to make his marvelous-minded creature look as physically unlike other fiction detectives as possible. And especially does he aim to have him totally different in his effects from the popular conception of the conventional detective. In fact the average detective of fiction is always declared to look absolutely unlike the average detective of fiction. 1. Some Early Detective Portraits M. Dupin is not described physically, as Poe's marvelous economy of attention made him omit every possible bit of material extraneous to his actual story. But, beginning let us say, with Lecoq, all seem to be diametrically opposed to the conventional detective. To quote from "The Crime of Orcival": M. Lecoq, whom none of them had ever met before, in no wise resembled the conventional French detective. The latter is commonly depicted as a tall fellow, with heavy moustaches and "imperial," wearing a military stock collar, a greasy silk hat, and a threadbare frock-coat buttoned up to the throat so as to conceal either the complete absence of linen or at all events the extreme dirtiness of a calico shirt. Such an individual will have immense feet incaged in heavy Wellingtons and will carry in his right hand a

Contributed by Elwood B Fritter, Oct 15, 2004 [ efritter@rcn.com ]. Total records = 672. Directions from the NJ Turnpike (Exit 5) are: Turn right (east) On County Route 541 toward Mount Holly, which is two miles distance. Coming To the businesses outside of the town make a right turn onto CR541 (Burger King On the corner). This is called the “Mt Holly Bypass”. Go two traffic lights after Turning on to the bypass and again turn right. This will be the Marne Highway. This is a connecting road between Mt Holly and Hainesport and is not but a few Miles long. Go approximately 1 mile and the church/cemetery is on the left hand Side of the road. It is a well kept and very neat cemetery and is not very large and has one entrance. I recorded all the stones that could be read during a walk through. There appears To be about a half dozen that were worn beyond reading. An attempt will be made To read the church records to find out the names of those stones plus the ones having no grave marker. I have transcribed all the stones that are readable, from the reading I took when I walked the cemetery in Oct of 2004.
